*Abstract

The analysis of the l i f t i n g yoke and b l a s t shield assembly considers t h e bending s t r e s s , weld strength, and resistance of t h e lug hole t o t e a r o u t . The bending s t r e s s o f t h e l i f t i n g lugs is evaluated t o ensure t h a t they meet the requirements o f the American I n s t i t u t e for Steel Construction (AISC 1989). Also considered i n the calculations i s t h e capability o f the thick lugs t o withstand t h e weight of the pump together w i t h t h a t of the container and strongback during r o t a t i o n t o the horizontal position.

WHC-SD-WM-DA-160 Rev. 0 Analysis of the Flexible Receiver Lifting Yoke and Blast Shield Assembly (Tank 241SY101)

1.0

INTRODUCTION

The f l e x i b l e receiver i s used t o maintain primary tank confinement and minimize waste s p i l l a g e during equipment removal from tank r i s e r s through pump pits. To remove t h e mixer pump, a crane i s used t o l i f t t h e l i f t i n g yoke ( H WC 1994a) t h a t i s connected t o t h e mixer pump. Before t h e pump is l i f t e d , a bag assembly w i t h a b l a s t shield ( H 1994b) is lowered over the l i f t i n g yoke and WC the mixer pump onto the load d i s t r i b u t i o n frame by t h e crane. During set up f o r pump removal, t h e l i f t i n g yoke will be s t a b i l i z e d v e r t i c a l l y by a yoke brace (WHC 1994c) while t h e crane i s disconnected from t h e yoke and connected t o the bag assembly. Each of t h e two components has four handling l u g s f o r l i f t i n g . After t h e mixer pump is pulled from the 241SY101 waste tank, i t will be inserted i n t o a v e r t i c a l container supported by a hydraulic strongback. The disposal container then i s lowered slowly t o the horizontal p o s i t i o n for transport. During t h e lowering of the container w i t h the pump, t h e l i f t i n g yoke remains attached t o the crane. A safety chain runs under the pump and is attached t o two t h i c k lugs o f the yoke. The s a f e t y chain prevents t h e yoke from bumping t h e flange of the container. The analysis i s t o ensure t h a t the l i f t i n g lugs have adequate strength. This supporting document reports on t h e s t r u c t u r a l analysis of t h e equipment based on requirements for s a f e t y c l a s s 3 (DOE-RL 1993a), t h e Manua7 of Stee7 Construction (AISC 1989), and the Hanford Hoisting and Rigging Manua7 (DOE-RL 1993b). 2.0 S M AY U MR

The analysis o f the l i f t i n g yoke and b l a s t shield assembly considers t h e bending s t r e s s , weld strength, and resistance of the l u g hole t o t e a r out. The bending stress o f the l i f t i n g lugs i s evaluated t o ensure t h a t they meet the requirements o f t h e American I n s t i t u t e for Steel Construction (AISC 1989). Also considered i n t h e calculations i s the capability of the t h i c k lugs t o withstand the weight o f the pump together w i t h t h a t o f t h e container and strongback during rotation t o t h e horizontal position.
3.0 DISCUSSION

The s t r u c t u r a l cal ;u1 a t i ons are based on the fol 1owing a1 1owabl e s t r e s s e s : 12,000 l!f/in f o r bending, tension, and bearing; 7,200 1b f / i n * for shear; 7,200 l b f / i n on e f f e c t i v e area f o r welds. According t o t h e Hanford Site Hoisting and Rigging Manua7 (DOE-RL 1993b) , the allowable s t r e s s e s except allowable shearing s t r e s s a r e one-third o f y i e l d strength.
1

WHC-SD-WM-DA-160 Rev. 0 3.1 Lugs f o r Lifting the Yoke

Four $-in.-thick lugs a r e welded on the 14- by 6-in. f l a t bar of t h e yoke The location o f t h e handling lugs i s symmetrical t o t h e center of gravi t y of t h e yoke when the yoke is l i f t e d horizontally. The calculations check t h e bending s t r e s s of the lugs when l i f t i n g w i t h o u t the use o f spreader beams. Also considered i n the analysis is t h e l i f t i n g load capacity of t h e lugs i n terms of tension, shear, bearing, and tear-out resistance (see Appendix A).

3.2

Lugs f o r Securing the Yoke

The t o t a l weight of t h e container and the pump i s approximately 80,000 l b ; the strongback weighs 30,000 l b . The lugs a r e designed on the basis of the reaction acting on the safety chain and the lugs from t h e t o t a l weight of container, pump, and strongback. The l u g s a r e full-penetration welded t o t h e yoke bar. Because t h e safety chain will bend the lugs inward, the analysis checks t h e bending of the lugs. Calculations show t h a t t h e bending s t r e s s o f a l u g 14-in thick i s acceptable (see Appendix A).
3.3 Lug f o r Lifting t h e Blast Shield Assembly

The weight o f each component of the b l a s t shield assembly i s estimated from drawing H-2-821387 (WHC 1994b). Although there a r e four l i f t i n g l u g s , the analysis assumes t h a t only two lugs share t h e t o t a l weight of t h e assembly. The assembly shall be l i f t e d by a 52-in. by 28-in. spreader bar w i t h four 15-ft-long cables. Because the dimensions o f the spreader bar i s close t o those of t h e assembly, the spreader bar l i f t s t h e lug of t h e assembly nearly v e r t i c a l l y . The thickness of the lug and t h e edge distance of t h e hole i n the lug a r e checked t o ensure adequate strength. The calculations appear i n Appendix B. 40 .

CONCLUSION

The calculations i n Appendices A and B show t h a t the + i n . - t h i c k lugs a r e qualified t o carry the weight o f the l i f t i n g yoke o r t h e b l a s t s h i e l d assembly. Also, the calculations determine t h a t t h e l+in.-thick lug i s s t r u c t u r a l l y adequate t o secure the container, pump and strong-back during rotation from 90' t o t h e horizontal p o s i t i o n .
