Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

If you are a farmer, midSeptember is usually a season of great expectations. Most years, nature and hard work combine to produce abundant harvests in Illinois. This is not a typical year. The summer drought has left the corn crop parched and other crops likely to yield below average. I know from my years as pastor in a rural community that farmers expect ups and downs. But this year is especially tough. That, coupled with the ongoing general economic downturn, means that many farm families will be hard pressed. Entire rural communities will be affected, including those people who do not depend directly on farm income. I write to you as the bishop of a diocese with a large agricultural area yet a small farming population. I would like the farmers to know how much their contribution to the common good is appreciated, how much value their work has. I would like the non farmers to join with me to pray for the farm families in the Diocese of Joliet. They may not be a direct part of our daily lives, yet how indispensable in so many ways they are. We are one in Christ, who prayed for a great harvest of souls. May the Father, who sent his Son as a sign of his immense love, sustain all of us, especially those who face difficult economic circumstances. Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME
ST.VINCENT DE PAUL FOOD PANTRY NEWS Recently our SVDP food pantry joined with the Jewel Food Store at Roosevelt and Main in a program to supply our clients with food that we previously had to buy from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. In addition to meat products, we also receive produce, dairy items, bakery items and items from the deli. The program enables us to pick up food on Wednesday and Saturday. This is all good food that may be near or on the "sellby" date. The response from our clients has been very positive and this food gives them something previously not available to them. Our SVDP food pantry currently has 2 chest type freezers that are very near capacity because of food items we receive from other local businesses. Our food pantry does not currently have a refrigerator we can devote solely for our use. In order to take full advantage of the food being offered to us by Jewel we need to increase our available freezer and refrigerator space. We ask that if anyone has a freezer or refrigerator they no longer use to consider donating it to our food pantry. Just call the rectory office and we will make arrangements to pick it up. You would be helping in our mission to do as Jesus commanded; "Feed the Hungry". St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry

Gold Envelopes
For years the heater in the former classroom, now learning chapel for Religious education and Academy, had a broken heater. When the kids and parish groups came to use the chapel there was no heat or air movement on warm days. The Operations Manager Javier found a person that would reasonably do this project for us. Many of the companies recommended to me by the Administration Commission, did not want to do this small project. We look forward to this project completion. Come by sometime and look at our Learning Chapel. Your generous donations to the gold envelopes makes projects like this possible. Thank you! Fr. Jarosz

Ten Commandments for Eucharistic Reverence

These Ten Commandments are taken from Our Reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist; O Come, Let Us Adore Him by Fr. Charles M. Mangan. Take time this week to work on this one commandment. We will continue to print one commandment each week. For an archive, please view previous bulletins on our website: www.ctklombard.org. VIII. Cultivate a rapport with the Ever-Virgin Mother of the Eucharist. Mary, present with her Divine Son on Calvary, is somehow present during each Holy Mass. Venerating Our Blessed Lady leads to adoration of the Master. The benevolent Mother instructs us how to love, adore and receive Jesus in the Holy Sacrament of the Altar.

Candlelight Vigil
In October 2007, Planned Parenthood opened what was at the time the largest abortion facility in the country in Aurora, Illinois, under a cloud of controversy and protest. Five years later, we're still there, praying, protesting and offering compassionate help to mothers being lured into Planned Parenthood in Aurora, so they can choose LIFE for their babies. On Monday, October 1, join us for a special Candlelight Vigil marking the fifth anniversary both of Planned Parenthood's opening in Aurora, and of the steadfast pro-life outreach there: EVENT: Candlelight Vigil at PP Aurora WHEN: Monday, October 1 at 7 p.m. WHERE: Planned Parenthood, New York St. and Oakhurst Dr. MAP: http://fvfapp.org/pp.map Prayers, hymns and reflections will be offered by some of the clergy and lay people who have served the pro-life mission at Planned Parenthood in Aurora.

And He loves us too, in our efforts to love them! Do you have a child who challenges you in those efforts? Have you had those dark thoughts that perhaps you got the wrong child or worse, that your child got the wrong mother or father? IT ISNT TRUE! Your child, whether he or she is autistic, developmentally disabled, mentally ill, or any other variety of different is the exact child you are meant to be blessed with. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

Are You Interested in being a part the Catholic community? Each year thousands of adults choose to become Catholics. They come from different backgrounds for different reasons: Some are already Christians from other traditions attracted by the teaching of the Catholic Church and by the example of individual Catholics they know. Some are from another faith or no faith at all who have heard about Jesus, His claim to forgive sin and His promise of eternal life. Some are non-Catholics who have been coming regularly to Mass for years with their Catholic relatives. They wish now to become full members of the Church. Some have had no previous contact with the Church at all but have this inner calling to discover the truth about the most important questions of life. The program is also for Catholics who missed out on the sacraments as children. If any of the above situations applies to you, then the RCIA process is for you. The R.C.I.A. is a process of faith formation for baptized non-Catholics and persons who have never been baptized who may be interested in becoming members of the Catholic Church. The process, done in a group setting, is facilitated by a team of parishioners and a staff member/ priest. Some of our team members became Catholics through this process while others are "life-long Catholics." Those persons who will be attending R.C.I.A. fall into three categories: Catechumens are persons who have not been baptized. They will receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Candidates for full communion with the Catholic Church have been baptized in another Christian tradition and would like to be in full communion with the Catholic Church. They will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Catholics who have been baptized but have not received the other Sacraments of Initiation will receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. For more information contact Eileen@ctklombard.org

Leadership Meeting
The Leadership of Christ the King met on September 4 in the Early Learning Academy. Each commission selected a Commission Chairman, a Recorder and set the goals for their respective commission for the coming year. Commission members identified which ministry or organization they represent within their commission. Each commission found ministries and organizations with no representation on the commission. Parish members are being sought to fill these positions. If you would like to lead a parish organization or ministry, please contact Eileen at the parish rectory and let her know that you are interested. She will be happy to include you in our Parish Leadership. Anna Weselak, Council Chair

MEDICAL MISSIONS UPDATE

A "Thank You!" to everyone who brought their outdated and unfinished medications to our Medical Missions Collection. RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
USCCB Nationwide Bulletin Insert September-October 2012

PRAYER AND ACTION ARE NECESSARY TO KEEP OUR FIRST FREEDOM FIRST
When Pope Benedict visited the United States in 2008, he asked the U.S. bishops a question: Is it consistent to profess our beliefs in church on Sunday, and then during the week to promote business practices or medical procedures contrary to those beliefs? The Holy Father then answered his own question: Any tendency to treat religion as a private matter must be resisted. Only when their faith permeates every aspect of their lives do Christians become truly open to the transforming power of the Gospel. Although the full impact of the Holy Fathers words might not have been understood then, they have since proven prophetic. The Pope was challenging Catholics in the United States to resist the growing pressure to confine religious beliefs to houses of worship and to prevent the Church and individual believers from living out their faith in their day-today work and care for others. The U.S. bishops have since raised numerous concerns over the increasing threats to religious freedom, especially the now-finalized rule of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which would force virtually all private health plans nationwide to provide coverage of sterilization and contraceptionincluding abortifacient drugs. While there is an exemption for certain religious employers, it only covers employers that serve people of their own faith. Jesus and his apostles would not qualify. Mother Teresa would not qualify. As the bishops noted in their statement, United for Religious Freedom, this is an extremely narrow and unprecedented federal definition of religion, resulting in coercion to act against our teachings and the violation of civil rights. Federal law has long been generous in protecting the rights of individuals and institutions to not to act against their religious beliefs or moral convictions. Is that now changing? Are we entering a time when the federal government may now force the Churchconsisting of its faithful and all but a few of its institutionsto act against Church teachings? While we seek remedies from the White House, Congress, and the courts, the U.S. bishops have called upon the Catholic faithful, and all people of faith, throughout our country to join in prayer and penance for our political leaders, and for the complete protection of our first freedomreligious liberty. Prayer is the ultimate source of our strengthfor without God, we can do nothing; but with God, all things are possible

To get breaking news and opportunities for action, text the word Freedom to 377377 on your cell phone. To learn more about our first freedom, and to send your message to Congress urging them to stand up for conscience rights in health care, go to www.usccb.org/conscience. To join in the Rosary Novena for Life and Liberty, October 14-22, or to sponsor a Marian Pilgrimage or other prayer efforts for religious freedom and conscience rights, go to www.usccb.org/freedom.

What can you do to help protect religious freedom?
