Banned Book Week: 10 Most Frequently Challenged Books for 2012

September 30 through October 6, 2012 marks the 30th anniversary of Banned Books Week. Banned Book Week is an annual event that celebrates the freedom to read. Each year, thousands of individuals and institutions across the United States participate in Banned Books Week, and it has grown into a premier literary event and a national awareness and advocacy campaign against censorship. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been challenged or targeted for removal from libraries and schools. While books have been and continue to be banned, part of Banned Books Week celebrates the fact that, in a majority of cases, the books have remained available. This is because of the efforts of librarians, teachers, students, and community members who stand up and speak out for the freedom to read. The following book list is the top10 most frequently challenged books for removal from libraries and schools for the year of 2012.

Freshman Library Orientation Video

The Shaker High School Library staff wanted to come up with a new and innovative way to introduce the freshman class to the Media Center. The idea of filming a fun and functional orientation video from a students perspective was decided upon. With the help of Mrs. Morgan, the student government members took on the task of creating the orientation video. Within a week, the student government members had written the script, filmed the scenes, and edited the video to create the final product. The student government members did a fantastic job. The end product was a six minute video that produces smiles, laughs, and library knowledge. The orientation video coveres all the need to know basics including: operation hours, library passes, how to sign out a book, library rules, and library staff introductions. Additionally, the video has student reflections on what they like best about the library. The video will be shown to all freshman English classes during the two weeks of library orientation. Library orientation will run from September 24th through October 5th .
