Greetings From Department Chair

Fall semester, we made it! Welcome back to campus, where the department has several exciting changes to share with you, as well. Dr. Matt Filipic (Ph.D., The Ohio State University) is our Visiting Professor, teaching American politics, including Campaigns and Elections. Impeccable timing in a most important electoral season! Be sure to meet with Prof. Filipic if you are interested in internship opportunities! Dr. Carlos Costa (Ph.D., The University of MissouriColumbia) is teaching Latin American Politics, and will offer a seminar on Brazil in the Spring semester. We are extremely pleased to welcome both professors to our ranks. Dr. Sean Wilsons book, THE FLEXIBLE CONSTITUTION, is going to press at Lexington Books. His treatment of originalism and legal ideology make this a terrific read. Congratulations, Dr. Wilson!

Edited by Professor Charles Funderburk, also a contributing co-author, POLITICAL CORRUPTION IN COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE was published this summer by Ashgate (London) and includes work by Dr. Funderburk on American political corruption, Dr. December Green on Brazil, Dr. Laura Luehrmann on China, Dr. Liam Anderson on Russia, Dr. Pramod Kantha on India and Pakistan, Dr. Vaughn Shannon on Israel and Palestine, and Dr. Donna Schlagheck on the United Nations. Joining this departmental collaboration was Dr. Julie Fisher Melton, a researcher at the Kettering Foundation, who contributed an overview of the work of non-governmental organizations that promote democracy and address corruption, with fascinating details from her field work in South Africa, Argentina and Tajikistan. The department and the college will offer a panel discussion of the project in the spring semester.

Political Science

A Model United Nations Alumni Society is being established and will convene at Rockafield House this December 14th. (Re)connecting alumni with the university, and each other, the society will focus on an endowment to secure the teams participation in the annual conference in New York. Graduating in April 2013?

You have to apply for it. The deadline for submitting applications is January 18, 2013. You will need to schedule a grad check with me before that date. Please bring a copy of one of your research papers with you to that meeting (it involves accreditation).

Not graduating so soon?

It would be a good idea to make sure that your DARS made the transition to semesters with you. If you havent already done so, please email CoLA adviser Forest Wortham (forest.wortham@wright.edu). Provide him with the last four digits of your UID and your IS track, and ask him to convert your DARS to semesters. Take a look at the semesters DARS and see if you have any outstanding issues (or if you worry that there might be any), and make an appointment to see me so that we can get it all sorted out now---as opposed to later, when these things can get dicey.

Either way?
Start preparing for life after graduation. 1. Work on making your rsum stand out from the crowd: Graduate with departmental honors in IS: finish with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (and 3.5 in the major) and submit a 12 page research paper on an international topic (that earned an A or B). Study abroad: contact Megan Trickler at the University Center for International Education (megan.trickler@wright.edu) to learn about trips this summer. There are a variety of programs (short and long), in English (or not). Did you know that it is possible to earn two semesters of foreign language credit over the summer? And, depending of what you have left, almost any course you take abroad will work for your track. Do an internship: there are possibilities for helping with refugee resettlement through Catholic Social Services and promoting international education with the Dayton Council on World Affairs (if you have at least a 3.0 GPA). Better yet, contact Debra Wilburn (debra.wilburn@wright.edu) about the Washington Center internships, in which you spend a semester living in DC and getting your foot in the door (while receiving credit toward graduation) in one of a wide variety of governmental or nongovernmental organizations. Have you noticed the free copies of The New York Times around Millett and the Student Union? Now even those of you without an app can keep up with the world. Studying the news should be part of any self-respecting IS major's daily regimen.

Welcome To This Years ICP Cohort!

Welcome to our new graduate students, and welcome back to all of the continuing students in the M.A. Program in International and Comparative Politics! Each of you is part of an historical time at Wright State University our first academic semester! Thanks to everyone who helped with the August orientation day for new students, especially Devin Babcock, Stephanie Cheeseman and Rana Odeh who helped with the returning student panel. Congratulations to our students who were honored during the end of the year celebrations last spring, including Kyleigh Clark, named the Outstanding Graduating Student from the ICP program for Academic Year 2011-2012, and Afsaneh Haddadian, the programs recipient of the 2012 Graduate School Excellence Award. Mark your calendars for the WSU Study Abroad Fair this Wednesday, September 26th, from 11am-3pm in the Student Union Atrium. This event provides a great opportunity for students to investigate the many different opportunities before them all around the world! Many of our ICP students find that adding an education abroad experience significantly enhances their M.A. degree. Future students: please note the WSU Graduate School Open House is scheduled for Monday, October 8th, from 57pm in the WSU Student Union (Apollo Room). Start your application that evening and the Graduate School will waive the application fee! Please note: the priority deadline for Fall 2013 students is March 31, 2013. We encourage students to submit their applications in February or early March in order to complete their admission interview in advance of the priority application deadline. Heather Atkinson completed a summer Executive Fellowship with the Polaris Project, an anti-human trafficking program. Heather is the second student with ICP-WSU ties at the Polaris Project: ICP alum Kathleen Davis is the National Training Director, based in Washington, D.C. Stephanie Cheeseman is serving as the International Visitor Center assistant with WSUs University Center for International Education (UCIE) during Academic Year 2012-2013. The International Visitor Leadership Program is the U.S. Department of States premier program for professional exchange, playing a key role in bringing emerging leaders to Wright State and the Dayton area. Stephanie also will be presenting her research, Sources of Cultural Authority: Blooming after the Arab Spring? at the upcoming International Studies Association (ISA) Midwest Conference in St. Louis this November. Jacquelyn Schroeder will soon begin a 13-month paid position with the Ohio Legislative Services Commissions legislative fellowship program. This competitive fellowship employs 25 fellows each year in a variety of research, constituent service and general caucus work within the Ohio General Assembly. Jackie is the second ICP student to receive this honor in two years: ICP alum Carrie (Kellar) Arblaster is currently completing her assignment in Columbus.

Dayton Council of World Affairs
