Code No. 502.

6 STUDENT CONDUCT ON SCHOOL BUSES Bus transportation for students enrolled in College Community Schools is one of the requirements set forth by the Department of Education. In complying with this requirement, the school district is authorized to establish policies and regulations which will ensure safe transportation for all students. Although the law requires the school district to furnish transportation, it does not relieve the parents or students from the responsibility of supervision until such time as the child boards the bus in the morning and after the child leaves the bus at the end of the school day. Once a child boards the bus -- and only at that time -- does he/she become the responsibility of the school district. This responsibility ends when the child is delivered to his/her regular bus stop at the close of the school day. Those students guilty of gross disobedience and/or misconduct on school transportation vehicles are subject to suspension of riding privileges. Administrators are authorized to suspend pupils for such violation(s) within the guidelines of the suspension policy. Suspension does not shield a student from further disciplinary action that may be required for circumstances beyond the intent of this bus conduct policy. Regulations of Bus Discipline 1) Drivers have means in which to manage behavior: a. Assign seats, issue verbal warnings, call parent/guardian, etc. b. Report rule violations in writing. c. Pulling over and stopping bus during the route to quell disturbances. d. Seek assistance to have disruptive student(s) removed from bus. Follow up from principals at third level is required. Once verbal warning(s) have been given to the student(s), the driver is required to submit their observations in writing to the Transportation Department. The following disciplinary procedure(s) will apply: a. b. c. d. e. 1st written referral - Written warning and/or 1 to 5 school day(s) suspension of riding privileges. 2nd written referral - 3 to 5 school days of suspension of riding privilege. 3rd written referral - 10 school days of suspension of riding privilege. * 4th written referral - 30 school days of suspension of riding privilege. * 5th written referral - loss of riding privileges for the remainder of the school year.

Code No. 502.6 Page Two Loss of transportation privilege for the remainder of the school year is classified as a minimum of 60 school days. In the event there are less than 60 school days until the completion of the regular school year, those days remaining will be served at the start of the ensuing school year. If a student is suspended for the remainder of the school year, he/she will not be afforded any warnings upon their return to rider privilege during the ensuing school year. They will, in effect, be on probation for the ensuing school year. * Each student and a parent/guardian will be required to attend a re-entry conference for 3rd and 4th written driver referrals. These will be scheduled at the convenience of the parent/guardian and school district. Conference participants will include the student, parent/guardian, building administrator, and transportation director. Other participants may be included at the request of the parent/guardian or school district.
