Providing time, formal and informal, for the SLMS to collaborate with other teachers is tied to student achievement! Supporting the budget and purchasing of meaningful resources will keep the library media centre organized and up-to-date. Provide constructive feedback both formally and informally to ensure a high standard of learning. Modeling reading for your students and staff will foster a love of literature! Encourage the SLMS to take part in Professional Development opportunities at the school, district and provincial level.

Big Ideas of the Library Media Centre:

School libraries are changing from just a "place" to dynamic learning centers for entire school communities. Access to quality resources, a belief in strong communication skills and a respect for diversity and critical thinking are but a few values of the school library, now more accurately called the school library media centre.
Ethical use of information must be taught so that students seek different perspectives, use social media sites responsibly, and credit their research properly. Inquiry and critical thinking provide important skills for students and teachers to learn. Reading is a foundational skill for learning, personal growth and enjoyment.

Goals in 2012 for the Library Media Centre:

Support and encourage all learners. Add to the collection and program resources and opportunities for reluctant readers (audio books, book clubs, graphic novels, books for boys). Provide more opportunities to staff to engage in collaborative teaching, specifically help with units inquiry based learning. Hold workshop on thematic teaching within the humanities.

Technology must be taught as a useful tool for learning.

Fair physical and intellectual access to resources for all students and staff must be considered in every learning environment.

Critical analysis and evaluation of information is important for effective and appropriate use of learning resources.

Collaboration and sharing of knowledge and resources with staff enhances learning.
