Chapter 2 Reading Organizer

1. Explain what the OS is and its purpose. The OS controls output and input functions. The entered data is then manipulated inside the computer, stored in RAM and processed by the CPU. This processing and internal manipulation is also controlled by the OS. All computer devices, such as desktops, servers, handhelds, and laptops require an OS in order to function. 2. Explain in detail what application programs are designed for. List some examples. An application program is any program that is designed to perform a specific function directly for the user or for another application. Stuff like word processors; database programs; Web browsers; development tools; drawing, paint, and image editing programs; and communication programs. 3. There are two ways for a computer user to interact with a computer. List and explain both. CLI user interacts directly with the system in a text-based environment by entering commands on the keyboard at a command prompt. GUI Allows the user to interact with the system in an environment that uses graphics, multimedia, and text combined. Actions are performed by interacting with the images. The Graphical User Interface is more user friendly. 4. Explain the following terms: ??? 5. Explain what a network operating system (NOS) does. Offers complex scheduling and user management software that allow a device to share resources between more than one user and treat networked recourses like they are directly connected.

6. a. b. c. d.

List four characteristics of an operating system that falls under a commercial license. Restrictive in nature and limits what end user can do with the code Often it is expensive depending on deployment Structured development cycle and changes are not quickly patched Structured support is not free of charge

7. List four characteristics of an operating system that falls under a GNU public license (GPL). a. Ensures everyone has access to the source code and the community is able to update the code b. Often released for free c. Development cycle is usually more lax but changes are often applied quicker due to less bureaucracy. d. Support is mainly supplied by the community 8. Operating systems require a certain amount of hardware resources, these resources include such things as: A. ram B. hard disk space C. video card D. processor speed 9.

10. What 3 factors need to be considered when selecting an operation system? a. Supports requirements of the end user, such as software compatibility B. hardware is compatible with OS C. level of human resources needed to support said OS 11. List and explain two instances when a clean install of an OS could be done. A. when a new system is purchased where no upgrade path exists B. when the existing OS has been damaged beyond repair 12. What happens to the existing data on a hard drive during a clean install? The partition where the OS is installed is erased beforehand.

13. How many partitions are required for a multiple OSs in a multi-boot environment? Each OS must have its own partition 14.

15. List and explain what things a technician can check prior to installing a new OS to ensure that the installation will work correctly? A. verify that all hardware is certified to work with the OS B. check to see that the hardware meets the minimum requirements C. check that the right installation medium is available, such as CD or DVD D. check the existing data for viruses then back up all important files E. if performing a clean install, check if all of the application software is able to be reinstalled 16. Explain the technique that can be used to help protect data on a hard drive when doing a clean install? Divide the hard drive into multiple partitions. That way you do not have to delete the older files and can move them to the new OS partition at your leisure. 17. There are three parts to the IP configuration, which must be correct for the computer to send and receive information on the network. List and explain these three parts. a. IP address identifies the computer on the network B. subnet mask used to identify the network on which the computer is connected. C. default gateway identifies the device that the computer uses to access the internet or another network

18. A computer IP address can be configured manually or assigned automatically by another device. List and explain both. A. manual configuration - required values are entered into the computer via the keyboard, typically by a network admin. The IP address entered is referred to as a static address and is permanently assigned to that computer. B. dynamic IP configuration computers may be set up to receive network configuration dynamically. This allows a computer to request an address from a pool of addresses assigned by another device within the network. When the computer is finished with the address it is returned to the pool for assignment to another computer. 19. What two pieces of information must be unique to every computer and not duplicated on the local network. A. computer names must be unique b. IP addresses must also be unique to each device 20. Explain what a software patch is. A piece of program code that can correct an existing problem or enhance the functionality of an application program or OS. They are usually given by the manufacturer from their website, in order to repair security flaws or a fix a reported bug. 21. List and explain the three different methods patches can be installed on a computer. A. automatic the OS can be configured to connect to the manufacturers web site and install updates without user input. These updates can be scheduled to occur during a computers down time. B. prompt for permission some users wish to have control over when and if patches are applied. This is often the choice of users who understand the impact of certain patches. The system can be configured to notify the user, and then they must decide. C. manual updates that require major pieces of code to be replaced on a system should be run manually. These major updates are often called service packs and are designed to correct major problems. These packs usually require the user to sign an agreement and install via a wizard. They also may be obtained from a CD via the manufacturer.

22. Match the scenario o the correct installation method by drawing a line between them.

23. Why do browsers and office software such as word processors, spreadsheet and database applications need to be patched? They need to be patched because they are common targets for network attacks. These security flaws need to be corrected and sometimes the patches add additional functionality the makes the programs more efficient to use.
