Johnny Appleseed Days

First held in 1888, the fair now known as Johnny Appleseed Days is the oldest harvest in the state! It has been sponsored by the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce since 1937. The 2012 two-day fall festival will celebrate Paradises apple heritage with homemade apple pie and ice cream. Paradise residents and members of the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce will again bake one thousand apple pies, available whole and in slices. Food vendors will serve Johhny Appleseed pulled pork, apple smoothies, and funnel cakes with apple topping. Paradise t-shirts, badges and souvenirs will be available from The Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce booth.Local businesses will give demonstrations and display their wares, and Paradise will host artisans from all over the state and beyond selling a variety of handicrafts. The ever-popular childrens area will feature face painting, games for the young and old alike and prizes. Johnny Appleseed will visit and tell stories. There will be continuous entertainment both days. So come and join us at Johnny Appleseed Days on Saturday, October 6th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, October 7th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event takes place at Paradise Intermediate School, 5657 Recreation Drive, in Paradise. FOCUS Film Festival: Educating and Inspiring Our Community

FOCUS Film Festival has announced their annual celebration of diversity and inclusion through film will be held in October at Chico State. Each year the Festival kicks off with a film screening at Sierra Nevadas Big Room and continues on to a full day of documentary and narrative films, workshops, and a reception for the winners of the Short Film Competition. This year, however, FOCUS Film Festival has announced several changes. The 8th Annual FOCUS Film Festival and Short Film Competition will once again kickoff at the Big Room on a Thursday, but will continue Friday and Saturday at Chico States Colusa Hall. This change in venue allows the Festival to show films in two theatres simultaneously as well as hold workshops and an art show in separate rooms. Adding a Saturday allows for more films, workshops, and more directors, actors, and experts to attend. Not only has the Festival itself been broadened, so has the variety of films selected for this year. Previously, the Festival focused largely on disability; this year, selected films will also focus on world views of such topics as diversity, poverty, and gender perspectives. FOCUS Film Festival kickoff will begin Thursday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at Sierra Nevadas Big Room and the event continues on Friday, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Chico States Colusa Hall. Department of History Bringing Reconstruction Expert to Chico State for October 8 Cowden Lecture
CSU, Chicos School of the Arts presents the Department of Historys 12th Annual Joanna Dunlap Cowden Memorial Lecture on Monday, October 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall (Performing Arts Center 134) on the Chico State campus. The event is free and open to the public. This years Cowden speaker is University of Maryland historian Michael Ross, a specialist in the Constitution and the Civil War era. Ross will address a key question of Reconstruction, that period just after the Civil War: Did the U.S. Supreme Court intentionally undermine African Americans rights in its pivotal Slaughter-House Cases decision of 1873? This decision is so important because of its impact on the Fourteenth Amendment, one of the pillars of the very African American-friendly Radical Reconstruction, said Robert Tinkler, Department of History professor and coordinator of the Cowden lectures. By narrowly interpreting the Amendment, the Court made it harder for the federal government to protect black Americans from discrimination by state governments, Although many scholars have blamed the Court for purposely harming African Americans with the decision, Professor Ross provides an intriguingly different interpretation, added Tinker. Professor Ross is well qualified to provide new insights into the decision, noted Tinkler, because he is an attorney, historian and author of a prize-winning biography of Samuel Freeman Miller, the Lincoln-appointed justice who penned the majority opinion in the Slaughter-House Cases. Rosss lecture will be provocative, enlightening, and even entertaining, Tinkler stated. Fans of the Cowden Lecture will not be disappointed. The Joanna Dunlap Cowden Memorial Lecture was established by family, friends, colleagues, and students to honor the memory of Joanna Dunlap Cowden. During her twenty-five year career at CSU, Chico, Professor Cowden specialized in the antebellum and Civil War history of the United States. She served on numerous faculty committees and as Chair of the History Department. She was known for her dedication to advancing the life of the mind and high quality teaching. Shortly before her death on April 19, 2001, her book, Heaven Will Frown on Such a Cause as This: Six Democrats Who Opposed Lincolns War, was published. For more information contact Tinkler at 898-5351.

Oroville Chamber Spotlight Mark Thorp

Wow, it's hot, hot, hot, and I feel like I'm melting! Not really, but it's an adventure every time I get into my car after work - how about you? Working for the Oroville Area Chamber of Commerce is a delight, and totally filled with events and activities that keep you smiling and outright laughing at times. Downright belly laughs, not chuckles, giggles or snorts - B.E.L.L.Y stuff. My name is Mark Thorp and I'm the Promotion and Market Development "guy" in the OACC office. I'm honored to work with Claudia Knaus, Susan Houle, and Mr. Cliff Marler. We get a lot done and have fun doing it! If you're wondering "why did I ever get into business for myself..." please give me a call. I'll share some horror stories, validate your feelings of frustration, and maybe even share some valuable tips that can salvage your entrepreneurial spirit. Hang in there... the Chamber's right around the corner!

How To Stay Happy As You Age

(StatePoint) Life has its inevitable ups and downs, and the challenges we experience might not always seem fair. But theres no need let your happiness depend upon lifes uncontrollable circumstances. What you want and what you get are not always one and the same, says Amy Shea, author of the new book Defending Happiness and Other Acts of Bravery, a collection of short stories about her lifes journey with adversity. The key is to find what makes you happy and defend it. In her book, Shea details how tough circumstances have not deterred her from living life on her own terms. For example, she ultimately came to view her battle with breast cancer as a gift of opportunity. What is possible to do in ones life changes remarkably when one fears death more than embarrassment, she says. Shea has experienced poverty, divorce, cancer and the daily woes of aging, parenting and being parented, but believes that come what may, she is prepared to defend her right to be happy. She offers these insights for those seeking happiness as they age: Your emotions do not need to be an automatic reaction to what happens to you. By believing that, you abdicate choice. It is not life that is happy or not. Its you. Dont forget to simply sit from time to time and do some inner wandering. Original thought happens a lot more easily this way than while texting on the treadmill. Life is neither fair nor kind -- but it is full of beauty and humor, and open to direction. When it comes to picking your battles, energy is like eye cream: expensive. So use just what you need and put it right where you want it. Aging wont be smooth and firm and flawless, but it is not the enemy. In fact, there are certain things about youth you wont miss at all. All of us have individual wiring that can get buried from time to time under habits weve formed. Be deeply committed toward the wiring that makes you happy. View life as a dynamic creative disturbance and dont forget to show up -- its worth whatever trouble it takes. More insights can be found in Sheas new book and online at www.DefendingHappiness.com. Whether youre experiencing adversity or simply going through the daily annoyances -- you can empower yourself by going after, and protecting your happiness.

Lets work together for the good of the community and quality recreation!
Experience: Fiscal responsibility and accountability is a must, and I have gained invaluable experience serving on the following boards and committees: Member - FRRPD Benet Assessment District Oversight Committee 4 year term Director & Vice Pres. Oroville Area Chamber of Commerce 4 year term Director - Oroville Association of Realtors 4 year term Director - Oroville YMCA 4 year term OEDCO - Liaison for Oroville Assn. Of Realtors Various local school committees and PTA Having served on various boards and committees, I have learned the value of listening carefully and objectively, and of facilitating cooperation. I will bring these same values and skills to the FRRPD Board and will ensure that decisions made are in the best interest of the community and based on reason and common sense. Volunteer: This past year I volunteered to serve as a member of the FRRPD Benet Assessment District Oversight Committee. One purpose of the Oversight Committee is to review the budget and make recommendations related to the use of Assessment District funds. I am proud to say that this year our Oversight Committee unanimously recommended that the District tax assessment not be increased. I also volunteered for the First Annual Feather River Clean Up Day. Attending the monthly Feather River Recreation and Park District meetings over the past year has afforded me the opportunity to learn about the District, the many facets of its operation and four million dollar budget.

Karen L. Whitlow
Personal Statement The Feather River Recreation and Park District is a vital part of our community and must be managed properly in order to maintain, preserve and create future recreational facilities, programs and opportunities for all ages. As a realtor, I enjoy the positive comments from clients new to our area when showing them the Feather River owing past our beautiful Riverbend Park and soccer elds. Such natural beauty and our many recreational opportunities make our community a special place to live. A resident of Oroville for forty years, I care deeply about our community and hope to use my experience and energy toward positive change. I have enjoyed using the District parks, river trails, pools and tennis courts over the years. My three children have been very involved with the Park District through basketball, baseball, soccer and competitive gymnastics. As a board member, I will seek public input regarding District policy, improvements and the development of recreational opportunities, for all ages. It would be an honor to serve as a Director on the Feather River Recreation and Park Board. Your vote would be very much appreciated.

Out & About in Oroville

Shake, Rattle and Roll Middle Eastern Style
based in Oroville during the 1980s and 90s. She and her daughter, Leanna, who was then only 15 years old, entered their first dance competition in San Francisco in 1985. And shes never looked back. In 1987, she became director of the troupe and started teaching classes. When her original troupe retired in the late 1990s, she formed a new troupe made up of some of her students along with her daughter. Taking part of that companys name she formed the Shalimar Dance Company, which is comprised of five women: Carolee and daughter, Leanna Lunsford, Sandy Martinez, Emme Newton and Christine Gess. In addition, David Tamori, Carolees husband and Walt Gess, Christines husband provide drumming accompaniment for the troupes performances. Shalimar Dance Company performed every year at the Gridley Fair and hosted an annual belly dancing competition at the State Theatre, until both venues changed owners and decided to feature different entertainment. Now they can be seen at local events such as the Salmon Festival, in which they have participated since the beginning. This year they will perform on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 11:00 a.m at the corner of Myers and Bird Streets. Interestingly, one of the dancers, Sandy Martinez, is pregnant with her second child and still performs with the group. She says that even if she feels heavy and loggy during the day when she begins to dance she feels buoyant and the baby seems to calm down in her womb. This shouldnt be surprising since belly dancing has been a sacred womens dance from nearly the beginning of time. One theory states that it was originally a birth dance. The laboring mother was placed in the center of the space and the village or tribal women danced around her in a circle. The rhythmic hip movements, the tinkle of the coins on the veils, headdresses and skirts of the dancers and the soft repetitive drumming induced a kind of hypnotic state that facilitated the birth process and lessened the mothers labor pains. It wasnt until the 18th and 19th centuries that belly dancing became the rage in Europe, when dancers from Middle Eastern countries began performing at Worlds Fairs. It finally came to the United States in 1893 at the Worlds Fair in Chicago. The term belly dancing is attributed to the entertainment director of that fair, Sol Bloom, who called it danse du ventre, which literally translated from the French means dance of the belly. Among contemporary belly dance enthusiasts, tribal belly dancing, introduced by Fat Chance Belly Dance in 1987, is another form of the dance calling on the traditions of North India, the Middle East, and Africa. The Shalimar Dance Company performs a traditional form of belly dancing that has its origins in the Middle East and is frequently called a cabaret style. Dancers perform choreographed dance sequences although occasionally a sole performer is the focus of the performance. Tribal belly dance is improvisational in nature and features a chorus from which several

by Alexandra Heath
members will emerge to perform together as the previous group merges back into the chorus. Even the costumes are different. Middle Eastern style dancing features lots of sequins, beads, spangles, and color with a bra-like top and either harem pants or skirt with a beaded or sequined belt. Tribal dancers favor a more folkloric style including layers of large tiered skirts, a short bodice over which is worn a bra decorated with coins and textiles, a headdress or hair decorations, one or more hip scarves with yarn, tassels or fringe, and a heavy layering of oxidized silver jewelry. Dancers frequently paint tattoos on their faces and color their eyes with kohl, a traditional Middle Eastern cosmetic. During its historical phase, belly dancing was never performed for the entertainment of men. Only women were permitted to perform or participate. Even the musicians were women. It was only with the advent of motion pictures and the glamorization of the Orient that belly dancing came to be associated with overt sexuality and male entertainment. Fortunately, now everyone can enjoy watching or even performing this ancient form of dance. There are even fitness videos available now based on belly dancing. And belly dancing features movements that are more accessible to a wider variety of body types, ages, and health problems. These days Carolee Tamori is focused on directing and performing with her troupe of dancers, enjoying her grandchildren, and contemplating offering private belly dancing lessons in the future. Dont miss any opportunity to see the company perform or even arrange for a lesson or two to experience this ancient womens dance!

The Shalimar Dance Company, an Oroville-based belly dancing company that has been performing throughout Butte County since 2000, is the result of a mistake. Carolee Tamori, the companys founder and director, was taking ballet lessons many years ago until her 82-year-old dance instructor called it quits. Looking around for another ballet teacher, she saw an announcement that the local YMCA was offering belly dancing classes. Thinking this was a misprint or typo, she was astonished to find, when she showed up for the first class, a room full of women dressed in sequined and beaded tops and harem pants. Oh no, she thought, Ive got the wrong class. But she stayed for the first class and many more after that and found that she naturally took to belly dancing. Subsequently she joined Troupe Shalimar Mirage, a belly dancing company also

Fun Halloween Ideas for the Family

(StatePoint) Autumn is here, which means Halloween is fast approaching. You can help make this season extra special for your kids by getting them in the spooky spirit with some great Halloween reading, viewing and hands-on activities. Eerie Reading With all that homework that comes with a new school year, you may be hard pressed to get your kids to do any extra reading. However, a fun Halloween book will earn their attention. Check out Professor Gargoyle: Tales From Lovecraft Middle School #1, by Charles Gilman, the first in a new series about the strange world of a creepy middle school. With a science teacher who morphs into a monster before you even open the book, this is one book you can judge by its cover, and it may also inspire a great costume. A nod to H.P. Lovecraft, the iconic horror author of the 20th century, this book is ideal for boys and girls ages 10 and older. To learn more about the book, visit www. lovecraftmiddleschool.com. Frightful Viewing Theres nothing more evocative of the season than a Halloween movie. You can make a night of it at home with some popcorn and an old classic like Its the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, or take the kids to the theater for a new tale. Hotel Transylvania, for example, a 3-D computeranimated film starring Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez, will make Dracula fun for kids. Creepy Crafting From carving your own Jack-o-Lanterns to designing your own Halloween costumes to adorning your house and yard with homemade decorations, Halloween presents the perfect opportunity to get creative with crafts. Encourage your kids to go the do-ityourself route this year. Not only are homemade costumes so much more unique than store-bought costumes, they can be inexpensive to create and are a lot more satisfying to show off to friends. Safety note: let little ones design their own Jack-o-Lanterns and help you scoop out the pumpkin, but leave the actual carving to an adult. Great crafting ideas abound on the Internet, including costumes that require no sewing. For inspiration, visit www.parenting.com. Make this Halloween a memorable one for kids with some great new reads, films and crafts.

Gardening with Alex

Alexandra Heath The One You Feed
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. A ght is going on inside me, he said to the boy. It is a terrible ght, and it is between two wolves. One is good and does no harm. He lives in harmony with all around him, and does not take offense when no offense was intended. He will only ght when it is right to do so, and in the right way. He is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. But the other wolf, ah! He is evil and full of anger. The littlest thing will set him into a t of temper. He ghts everyone, all the time, for no reason. He is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. He continued, The same ght is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too. The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, Which wolf will win? The old Cherokee simply replied, The one you feed. A corollary for gardeners might be what a young man told me his grandmother had once said to him, Whatever you water grows. Its no surprise that growing a garden has been a metaphor for how a person lives their life. As this years harvest season draws to a close and we enjoy the bounty of the earth, it may be a good time to cast our thoughts back over the course of the past year and ask ourselves, How has my garden grown? In some cases weve lost interest in the hard work of ensuring that a good harvest results. Weve become discouraged by the weeds, the insects, the gophers, the sheer work of maintaining a garden and so we have little to harvest. It might be that we have been feeding the wrong wolf. Where have our thoughts, actions, words, and attention been placed during the past year? Have they focused on joy, peace, love, and hope or rather on anger, envy, sorrow, and regret? Its no coincidence that the proverb says, As you sow, so shall you reap. Sometimes our greatest obstacle to growing our garden and our lives is that we feel we are all alone, that the struggle to keep good thoughts and actions foremost in our lives is an exercise in futility, something akin to getting rid of gophers. No matter what you do, they seem to keep popping up all over the garden, and before you know it theyve eaten the roots of all your well-tended plants. Interestingly, I recently read an article in which the author discovered that all of the people he has spoken to over the years from different cultures, religions, ethnic groups, income classes, and generations have two things that are foremost in their minds. First, everyone, everywhere wants a society different from the one weve got. They want community, an economy, a world based on the values of the good wolfcompassion, generosity, love. The second is that they think they are alone and are the only ones who feel that way. They look around and see no validation for the values they want so they give up and just go along with things the way they are. Now, what if weall of usfed the good wolf inside us? Might not we begin to recognize that the world we really want is not only possible, but is right here, now? In our neighbors and friends, in our families and coworkers, in the people who ring up our groceries and x our carseverywhere we look is the foundation of the world we want. We are not alone. We just need to feed the good wolf and recognize that wolf in others.
