Education and Training for London Audiology

Developing a sustainable strategy using a collaborative approach


Overview of the Project
Complex changes in the provision of Audiology and Hearing services will have major consequences on the education and training of the London workforce. Aims Understand workforce need Remove confusion about training routes Give clarity for funding Support providers in decisions around skill mix Enable clearer recruiting policies Support development of Consultant posts Utilise the expertise that already exists in London Scope Map workforce level and need across different patient pathways Interpret and apply MSC Policy Ensure training programs are cost effective, relevant for all providers and deliver across all career levels Provide LETBs with robust legacy document Encouraging distributive leadership within networks using workshops and knowledge sharing Identifying emerging leaders within networks thus embedding clinical leadership across London Audiology Increase Audiology profile within SHA and identify funding streams to enable next phase; strategy implementation

Progress/Outcomes
First ever London Audiology Education and Training Strategy Completeness of Audiology workforce data across London Interim report for SHA in March 2012, final report early 2013, a legacy document for LETBs Successful funding bid to develop Pan-London assistant training program BSc in Neurosensory PTP (Audiology), a unique hybrid delivery model of Middlesex University and UCL starts 09/2012 Network created to co-ordinate training placements, signpost CPD opportunities, and develop greater use of social networking Successfully interviewed and awarded Chair for Neurosensory groups at Academy of Healthcare Science Invited to work with CSO in related projects

Leadership Challenges
Boundary spanning across multiple stakeholders to create an appetite for change, remove silos, develop understand and allow cross sector dialogues. This includes DH, SHA, Academia, Third Sector, Patient Groups, Independent Sector, Professional Bodies, Accrediting Bodies and London Audiologists. Identify and engage all stakeholders in strategic development Understanding and encouraging data collection for Workforce planning
