Subject: - Management Perspective: Course Plan Faculty: Dr. veer gangwar/ Dr.

Bhawna Syal, (Marketing) COURSE PERSPECTIVE : The students will better appreciate the issues they will face in running any business by way of knowing & understanding the practice of management & trace its evolution, current issues like environmental awareness, ethics & social responsibility, globalization, entrepreneurship, diversity & multiculturalism, common roles & responsibilities of managers such as planning, organizing, leading & controlling within the framework developed for effective functioning of the organisation. The students will also know the interconnectedness of various disciplines & importance of human relationships in any business function. COURSE OBJECTIVES: The objective of the course is to provide an understanding of basic concepts, principles and practices of management. The aim is to inculcate the ability to apply multifunctional approach to organizational objective. COURSE CONTENTS Unit: 1 History and Concepts of Business, trade, industry and commerce- Business features of business, Trade and Industry; Classifications; Relationship between trade, industry and commerce, Introduction and Role of Management. Unit: 2 Organisations & need for management : Difference between managers and operative employees, what is meant by the term management, value of studying management, differentiation between efficiency and effectiveness, the four primary processes of management, the three levels of managers and the primary responsibility of each group, The essential roles performed by managers, the four general skills necessary for becoming a successful manager, the relevance of popular humanities and social science courses to management practices. Why study management theory?: Evolution of management theory, Scientific management school, Classical organisation theory school, The behavioural school approach, Relations theories, The management science school, Recent developments in management theory, The Systems approach, The contingency approach Unit: 3 Planning: Definition of planning, the potential benefits of planning, potential drawbacks to planning, strategic and tactical plans, directional plans vs. specific plans, management by objectives, the steps in the strategic management process. Unit: 4. Organizing: Six elements of organization structure, advantages and disadvantages of work specialization, authority vs. power, five different ways by which management can departmentalize, mechanistic and organic organizations, the effect on organization structures of strategy, size, technology, and environment. Divisional and functional structures, strengths of the matrix structure, the boundary less organization and what elements have contributed to its development, learning organization, organization culture . Unit: 5.

Directing & Supervising: Meaning, Features, Importance, Principles of Direction, Elements of Direction, Need for Supervision, Skills of a supervisor, Supervisory Roles, How to supervise effectively, Traditional Vs. Developmental Supervision. Delegation of authority: Nature of delegation, Principles of delegation, Under/Over delegation, Advantages of delegation, Important decisions in delegation, Delegation problems, Guidelines for effective delegation. Unit: 6. Controlling: The meaning of control, Importance of control, Process of control, Tools of control, Designing control systems. Unit: 7. Decision making: The steps in the decision-making process, four major decisionmaking styles, the advantages and disadvantages of group decisions, techniques for improving group decision making. Unit: 8. Coordination: Concept, Importance, Differentiation and Integration, Approaches to achieving effective coordination. Unit: 9. Forms of Business Organization: Classification Factors influencing the choice of suitable form of organization: Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, Joint Hindu Family Business, Joint Stock Company.

Students Roles & Responsibilities : for better learning and comprehension of the subject, the students are expected to: Take Initiative Study Regularly Refer additional reading Read Business News paper & Magazines.
