Every journey has a beginning


Alaska National began when a group of Anchorage business entrepreneurs, each with a particular expertise in corporate finance and commercial insurance, joined together to form a new caliber of company. The driving vision for this new venture was to provide Alaska businesses with financially secure risk protection, supported by delivery of consistently superior underwriting, loss control and claims service by regional professionals.

While weve grown and evolved over the years, our mission of providing customers with a highly tailored, superior quality approach to their insurance needs has not wavered. Alaska headquarters Our home base is Anchorage, Alaska, where we have a long-standing reputation for responding quickly to changing market conditions and a diversity of client needs. We offer a comprehensive array of commercial line insurance products, including Workers Compensation, General Liability, Commercial Multi-Peril, Equipment Breakdown, Commercial Auto and Umbrella. Northwest expansion In 1990, Alaska National opened its Seattle office, initially focused on writing Workers Compensation coverage and serving clients in the seafood industry. The office quickly diversified into other areas of underwriting activities. More recently, the Seattle office has added a full range of commercial lines coverage to its employee-risk product offerings, including General Liability, Commercial Multi-Peril, Equipment Breakdown, Commercial Auto and Umbrella. In 2000, Alaska National opened its third office, based in San Francisco. The offices first primary purpose was to support development of a State Act Workers compensation program. To enhance the San Francisco offices continued development, we recently broadened coverage offerings to include middle-market guaranteed cost Workers Compensation, General Liability, Commercial Multi-Peril, Equipment Breakdown, Commercial Auto and Umbrella. National expertise Today, Alaska National serves a broad spectrum of leading business entities throughout the West, as well as maintaining a presence around the nation as needed by our clients. We are proud to have earned an A (excellent) rating from A.M. Best; a rating weve held since 1991. Our team of highly trained professionals brings a proven track record in all facets of workers compensation, USL&H, general liability, property/casualty and maritime claims. One important distinction youll discover at Alaska National is that our claims examiners have an industry-low number of caseloads (typically 100 or less). Also, each examiner is supported by a full-time assistant. Our lower caseloads allow our examiners to be more informed and pro-active in their handling of individual claims. Likewise, our loss control consultants are not limited by arbitrary standards to determine the appropriate level of service, but by customer need. Our areas of specialty


A commitment to serving customers is embedded in everything we do. Heres a quick look at how our customeroriented approach impacts three areas of our business. Creative Underwriting Service at Alaska National begins even before a policy is issued. With each new account submitted to us for consideration, a prompt review is undertaken, and an early indication of interest or declination is provided. By doing so, our agents and brokers can then plan accordingly by providing the additional information required so we can complete our underwriting, or pursue other markets as necessary. We will often schedule a loss control visit to evaluate the exposures, identify opportunities for accident prevention and discover additional customer needs. These early visits will lay the groundwork for more comprehensive loss prevention plans should we later provide insurance coverage. Occasionally, we will provide an Account Service presentation to determine each customers required service level, confirm all customer needs, answer questions and provide a more complete understanding of Alaska Nationals service options. Once our underwriting evaluation is complete, we communicate our proposal to the agent or broker, both verbally and in writing. If our proposal is chosen, we will notify all Alaska National service providers and begin coordinating the initial implementation of services. Loss Control For our customers, the most important claim is the one that doesnt happen. Therefore, the primary purpose of our Loss Control department is to assist policyholders in their efforts to avoid accidents. Whether the potential loss involves people, property, autos or a third-party liability, we can help. With our Needs Based approach to loss control, we get to know your business, identify your exposures, analyze your losses and assess existing controls. Then we suggest ways we can work together to enhance your safety program. This thorough, customized approach to loss prevention is rarely found today. Its one more example of our commitment to tailoring a solution that meets or exceeds each customers expectations. Most of our Loss Control Consultants have attained credentials and certifications widely recognized in the safety and insurance fields. In addition, we offer an extensive array of safety programs and resources to help your business and employees manage risk and avoid accidents. We maintain a team of highly trained claims professionals with the technical knowledge and expertise to address a variety of claims under the coverages we make available. These include state workers compensation, U.S.L.&H., maritime employers liability, commercial property, general liability, business auto and garage liability, and inland marine. Each of our customers receives a Claims Kit that includes all required posting notices, claim forms, accident investigation notices and other materials. In addition, an adjuster, specifically assigned to the account will call within 24 hours to introduce themselves and provide contact information for the team. Our claims examiners have industry low caseloads and each has the support of a claims assistant. This allows our claims handlers to give your claim the consideration it deserves and the attention necessary to achieve a satisfactory conclusion. Speed and efficiency are important to us as well. Alaska National has a sophisticated electronic claims system that provides prompt handling of claims and timely dispersal of information. Our claims examiners maintain close personal contact with our customers and are available to discuss any detail of a claim, either in person or by telephone.
