Kick Off

Well I am now officially a Relay worker, and have been for the past four weeks. My year of Relay started off with two conferences, Relay 1 and Forum, which both took place at Quinta, near Oswestry. and there was a real sense of fellowship and unity amongst relay workers and staff alike. There are 73 relay workers across 10 regions in the UK and Ireland. I left Relay 1 having made a lot of new friends, in particular the 6 other guys in my dorm, with whom there is genuine love, trust and support, pointing each other towards Jesus.

Relay 1
This was an intensive 7-day training conference for all of the relay workers across the UK, with some workers from IFES Ireland also attending. The purpose of Relay 1 is to equip and train relay workers for all aspects of life during relay and afterwards, from how to study the bible to managing finances. It is also an opportunity to meet other relay workers, with an emphasis on regional teams, dorm prayer cells and fellowship groups. The week was packed with excellent teaching (more than any of us could process at the time!),

Life as a Relay Worker

Since Relay 1 and Forum my region (South East) have had two training days together in Southampton, looking at Jesus nature as our saviour in Isaiah 25 v6-9. The relay workers have also had an extra two days in Southampton learning about handling the bible, and various tools that we can use to help us understand the bible better. I have a core study program, which looks at various aspects of the nature of God, faith and church history. This study takes me through Grudems Bible Doctrine and various recorded sermons and books online. Each Monday I meet with Tom and Esther, the Relay Workers in Reading, and Gareth, my Staff Worker, to go through our core study, a group bible study and have a supervision session with Gareth. Every week the Christian Union in Surrey run an International Caf on a Monday evening and have their main meeting on a Thursday evening. I am also attending my churchs (Chertsey Street Baptist Church) Student Group on a Wednesday evening, helping occasionally with the bible study. I also have the opportunity to serve tea and coffee with my CU outside the Students Union on a Friday night to students who are out at the club, which is a fantastic opportunity to serve students and share the gospel.

Forum
Just as Relay 1 finished, and all of the relay workers and staff were processing the teaching they have received, 996 students arrived at Quinta. Forum is a training conference designed to teach and equip students involved in running their Christian Union for evangelism and discipleship. There were two main meetings per day, as well as mission equipping tracks and seminars in the late morning and afternoon.

Freshers Week
Last week was one of the busiest weeks of the year Freshers Week! This saw thousands of students, many of whom are international students moving to a new town, meeting new people, getting used to a new routine, signing up to various societies and starting lectures. This made the campus at the University an absolute hive of activity, and the Christian Union got involved through serving free hot drinks and biscuits during moving in weekend and outside the union every night, running lunchbars (free lunch and a talk) from Monday to Thursday focusing on lifes big questions, an international students welcome event and the first main meeting of the year on Thursday evening, where we saw over 30 new students! On top of all that there was a welcome BBQ for returning students, a prayer and worship event where the CU, Chosen Christian Fellowship (a similar society at Surrey) and the Academy of Contemporary Musics (ACM) CU all united around praying to and worshipping Jesus, and prayer at 8am every day of the week, which was not only encouraging for those who went but also led to God answering our prayers in encouraging ways! All of that in the space of one week meant that freshers week was exhausting, but so encouraging.

Prayer & Support

Every week on Monday is the CUs international caf, and on Thursday is the CUs main meeting. Pray for the committee of the CU, that they would be wise in the way that they organise and run events, that they would act with humility and love towards each other, that they would set a good example for the members of the CU in personal evangelism and that they would be growing continually in the strength of their faith and in loving God with all of their heart, mind and soul.

Important Dates
6 We have some Jehovahs Witnesses coming to our house in the morning to talk about Jesus. 24 -25 Regional team days in Finchampstead. Pray for a good and encouraging time, and that we would all be built up in the knowledge and love of God. I pray because I cant help myself. I pray because Im helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the timewaking and sleeping. It doesnt change God- it changes me. C.S.Lewis

Looking Forwards
I am so thankful to God for the way that he has led and encouraged me, and the CU in Surrey. Over the past month God has taught me reliance on him, discipline in study and organisation, as well as showing me great joy in his character. As I move forwards in Surrey I will be seeking to serve the CU as best I can, continue with study and start meeting with people to study Gods word. One of the key activities that the CU does is run a weekly international caf; and it is so important given the vast number of international students at Surrey. Another hope for the future is that there will be a greater number of students coming to the main meeting on Thursday. It was encouraging to see so many last week before freshers fayre, and it would be good to see even more show up, and continue to do so, so that they can be an effective witness to their friends. One of the main ways in which people come to Christ is through their friends personal witness and the more people get stuck in with that, the more people will have the opportunity to know Jesus.
