PRESIDENT'S REPORT
Well, it is almost the end of my first year in the role of BHA President and what an interesting year its been! Despite lots of challenges and a very steep learning curve, weve made some good progress on a number of fronts. There is still a lot to be done but thats the exciting part about this role. Following on from the tremendous results of the Kookaburras in Athens last year, there was much anticipation and excitement at the start of the 2005 season. It was great to see Australian Players Dean Butler, Matthew Wells and Stephen Lambert playing in our Brisbane competition as often as their busy schedules allowed. The start of the season was also heralded by the laying of new turf on the State Hockey Centre No. 1 field. Congratulations to all the Premiership-winning Teams and the Players of the Finals (details are contained later in this Annual Report). There was a spread of premierships across a range of Clubs which was good to see. Also, congratulations to George Clutton from Eastern Suburbs for winning the BHA Best and Fairest Medal for the second year running. Throughout 2005, Brisbane fielded teams in all major Regional and State Championships congratulations and thanks to all representative players, coaches, managers, umpires and supporters for your achievements. Our teams were successful in winning a number of these Championships Premier League;Veterans Over 40s State Championships and Coulter Shield; U/11 Coulter Shield; U/13 Coulter Shield and U/15 Coulter Shield. Apart from the regular day-to-day activities needed to keep the Association running, there were a number of key decisions and highlights from a Management perspective, including:
Removal of all fees and charges for Minkey players; a significant reduction in the charges for U/9 players and a reduction in the fees charged for players who play in both the Junior and Senior competitions All of these changes were designed to bolster the numbers of players taking up and staying in the game; A reduction in the fees for U/17 players from 2004 transitioning into the senior ranks in 2005. This initiative recognises the financial challenges faced by players and their families as they transition out of High School into the workforce or further studies; Introduction of a 10-game (as well as the 5-game) reduced fees to cover temporary players. Establishment of a very positive working relationship with Hockey Queensland. Thanks to Ken, Garry and all the team at Hockey Queensland. Establishment and funding of the Southbank Institute Program that provided further developmental opportunities for ten BHA players who have represented Brisbane at Under Age tournaments but who had been unsuccessful in securing a position with the QAS squad. The Program provided similar services to the QAS to enable athletes skills and fitness to improve to levels where they can stay in the game and be competitive in seeking opportunities in the AHL and U/21 teams. Development of the first draft of a Player-Development Road Map showing the many and varied pathways available to players of all standards. Changing the approach to dual-registered players to enable them to nominate which centre they wished to represent for the various State Championships. A Working Committee was successfully established to look at the location of Grass fixtures for next season and beyond. Extinguishment of BHA's guarantee of facilities (with Bank of Queensland) previously granted in respect of the State Hockey Centre that was in place with the State Hockey Centre. Introduction of the three J Grades to provide further opportunities for our junior players.
Umpiring especially the allocation of experienced umpires across all senior grades; Reduction in the number of late games that our players are required to play on Saturdays and Sundays. Continuing to foster a sense of a Brisbane Hockey community developing a united partnership between BHA and all Clubs. Taking a longer-term strategic view of the Association and the directions in which we need to head. Getting enough talented and dedicated people to put their hand up to take on roles on the BHA Board and its various subcommittees.
A season of hockey doesnt just happen by itself theres always lots of hard work required. So, Id like to take this opportunity to say thanks to the following people for their contributions to Season 2005:
Kim Rendell for the many hours of hard work that he has dedicated to our Association. His excellent work with our website has placed it at the forefront of the hockey community and provided everyone with an easily-accessible location to keep up to date. To Lex Barney and Kym Ireland for their efforts in all of the development areas throughout the year. Also, thanks to Susan Johnston for all of her hard work in ensuring all of our accounts were paid on time and the outstanding debtors now stand at one of the lowest figures in recent history. Norm Ludwig for his many hours of behind-the-scenes work in assisting Susan with the accounts. Rachelle Faulks our school-based Trainee for her hard work and assistance. To our Sponsors (through Queensland Hockey Promotions) thanks for your generous contributions. To the BJHA Committee for their excellent work in providing playing opportunities for all of our Juniors. The Umpires who regularly turned up to provide independent adjudication. The Tech Bench officials for the many thankless hours they spent helping to keep the games running smoothly and on time. The First Aid officials who were always there to assist when required. All BHA Coaches and Managers for the investment of time and expertise that you put into developing our representative teams and players. Greg Swann, June Grant, Barry Bolton and all of the organising committee for hosting a very successful U/13 Boys State Championships at the State Hockey Centre. The Management Committees and Boards of all Clubs (Seniors and Juniors) for your help and support throughout the year. To the Club Delegates (to both the Senior and Junior Delegates bodies) for attending the many meetings and for providing invaluable feedback and input into the running of our Association. And last, but by no means least to my fellow Board members for the many hours of personal time that you have given up to assist with the running of the game for all Brisbane players. Thank you all.
Finally, regardless of our backgrounds and Club allegiances, I encourage everyone to work together as a united Brisbane hockey community and in so doing we demonstrate the importance of helping each other out for the advancement of our sport. There are many significant opportunities and challenges laying ahead for our Association and we need to focus on taking these opportunities and working together for the advancement of our sport. I look forward to continuing the journey with you in 2006. With best regards
Whilst we are pleased with the progress made in these areas, it is also acknowledged that there are areas for improvement for next year, including:
Colin Murphy
BHA President

A Grounds Committee was not formed for 2005. The Association was required to liaise directly with ShawSportz Ltd regarding all matters pertaining to the grass fields used at Shaw Park.
INTERNET
The Internet once again fulfilled its role as the predominant communications medium of BHA. Since its introduction in 2000 there has been a steady decline in the costs to your Association for postage and telephone services. All meeting notices, forms, invoices, important and topical information amongst other things are now emailed to clubs. The BHA Website is now the focus for all matters related to fixtures, player, coach and manager nominations, important events, club contact listings, player survey and a myriad of other important information.
FIXTURES
The 2005 Season of Fixtures got under way earlier than in previous years due in the main to the many interruptions that were scheduled for the State Hockey Centre (SHC). The Director of Competitions, Russell Marsden, did an excellent job of creating the fixture draws around these. The season's dates have been summarised in the following table: BHL1 5 CHL1 - 2 (Grass) th Feb 05 Commenced Sat 2nd Apr 05 Sat 26 Memorial Cup President's Trophy Semi-finals Preliminary Finals Grand Finals
Not played - awarded to the leader at the conclusion of round one Not played - awarded to the leader at the conclusion of round two Sat 27th Aug 05 Sun 4th Sep 05 Fri 9th Sep 05 (BHL4&5) Sat 10th Sep 05 (BHL1-3) Sat 27th Aug 05 Sun 4th Sep 05 Sat 10th Sep 05 Tue 23rd Aug 05 Tue 30th Aug 05 Tue 6th Sep 05
Casualties of the tight season were the Memorial Cup and the President's Trophy Finals, normally played as separate matches. Instead these were awarded to the leading team in each division following the completion of the first complete round in the case of the Memorial Cup and following the completion of the second complete round in the case of the President's Trophy. A list of the winners appears later in these reports. As in 2004 your Association did not schedule fixtures on Friday nights as per the decisions of the General Committee (the Clubs). The Brisbane Hockey League (BHL) matches were scheduled as follows. BHL1 and BHL2 were played on Saturdays only while BHL3, BHL4 and BHL5 were played predominantly on Sundays with overflow to Saturdays, i.e. five divisions playing on the artificial surfaces of the SHC and the Burringbar Park Facility. The Classic Hockey League (CHL) divisions were played entirely on the grass fields of Shaw Park with the exception of only the Preliminary and Grand Finals which were played on the SHC grass fields. All Veterans (VHL) matches were once again played on Tuesday nights, the general consensus appears to be in favour of retaining all Veterans matches on the one night at the one venue.
Barry spoke entertainingly about his experiences when starting out as a referee right through to his experiences refereeing at the highest levels. Congratulations go to George Clutton of Eastern Suburbs Hockey Club, winner of the BHA Best & Fairest Medal for the second year in succession. Other winners of awards included Ben Sawyers (Pine Rivers St Andrews HC) Rookie of the Year; Brad Carlon Umpire of the Year; and Bruce Robertson Coach of the Year. A more detailed listing of the winners can be found in a later section of these reports. I wish to thank Paul Saunders for his efforts in organising the dinner and sourcing many of the awards and Susan Johnston for maintaining the progressive points tally, for her assistance with the auditing of the final points and with the production of the slide show. The night was a success and a credit to those who organised and managed this year's event.
PLAYER SURVEY
During the lead-up to the Corporate Planning Meetings an 'on-line' survey was conducted via the BHA Website. The survey canvassed player opinions and preferences for issues such as:
REPRESENTATIVE
It was always going to be difficult for our representative teams to equal the previous year's performances in winning almost all of the State Championships however this is not the only criteria upon which these teams should be judged. All of this year's teams can be credited with solid performances. The players of each team along with the coaches, managers and the final results are listed in a section later in these reports.
were players satisfied with the current fixture template? should there be a return to the scheduling of Friday night fixtures? should the match times for divisions be spread over both Saturday
and Sunday?
should club's teams play in sequence? should a system of umpire allocation, similar to BWHA's be
introduced to the BHA competitions? The survey was judged a success in that one hundred and six players responded over a three week period. This represents a little over ten percent of senior players and therefore is considered a credible sample. The results were subsequently presented to the Club
COMMITTEES
The Judiciary Committee was called upon on 13 occasions while the Appeals Committee was called upon just the once. I thank the members of each of these committees as well as those who volunteered to stand in from time to time. The full time members of these committees are listed with the Officials.

Delegates at the Corporate Planning meetings and proved invaluable when discussing various aspects of next year's competitions.
TREASURER'S REPORT
I am pleased to submit, on behalf of the Board of Management of the Brisbane Hockey Association Inc, the Financial Statements of the Association for the year ending 30 September 2005, which appear on the following pages. The on-going challenge for this Association is to reduce the overall playing costs for our members and one significant way is a sustained effort to increase our player base, therefore spreading costs over greater numbers. I am indebted to the invaluable assistance, of the following people, throughout this past year:
Colin Murphy for his continued encouragement and assistance; Kim Rendell for his day to day assistance to the Board Executive; To all club treasurers and the countless hours they spent for the
benefit of their clubs in particular and the association overall. For the benefit of our sport, we move forward embracing all available opportunities.

DIRECTORS' REPORTS
DIRECTOR
OF
Special thank you to Kim Rendell and Board Members for their support during the season.
COMPETITIONS
Phyllis Hawgood
Director of Administration
This is my second year as Competitions Director and it proved to be no easier than the first. I must thank Kim Rendell, Barry Bolton and June Grant for their invaluable help throughout the season as well as the officials of all clubs. The cooperation of the management of BWHA, in particular Jenny Heron, ensured that on the whole the season progressed smoothly with only a few minor hiccups. Thanks must also go to the staff at SHC and Shawsports for their assistance throughout the year. As you know, the fixtures had to be arranged around the National League games and the week-long finals at the S.H.C. It was decided that the Memorial Cup and Presidents Trophy finals would not be played and instead be awarded to the team leading at the end of the first and second rounds respectively, in each division. Unfortunately, looking at next years calendar, the same scenario may occur. Although fixtures had been set, BHA was asked to accommodate requests from some clubs to change games. This caused a great deal of extra work for the officials involved in setting fixtures, disruption to field bookings and led to some irritation and inconvenience to other clubs where these requests were met. We all recognize the benefit of club days and strive to do our best to schedule these into the fixtures, however it would be greatly appreciated if clubs could get their requested dates into BHA as early as possible prior to the start of the season so that a fixture list can be distributed to clubs at least a fortnight before games commence. To avoid ill feeling, it would also be appreciated if clubs could keep to the scheduled fixture times with an absolute minimum of requests for changes unless absolutely necessary. I believe when fixtures have been drawn up and passed by club delegates that they stay as they are unless undue circumstances arise.

UMPIRES
What started as a promising year for umpires went downhill during the latter part of the season but concluded with a successful finals finish to the season. A number of factors like scheduling, injuries, family commitments and work contributed to the lack of umpires during the season. This was not helped by the, at times, lack of support by the clubs in not providing back-up umpires and comments made at different times. The time has come for clubs to find a way to get the better umpires umpiring at BHL1 and BHL2 level which will flow down to providing better umpires to all grades. As a complete association working for the betterment of the sport in Brisbane all of us must start taking a holistic view and what is best for one may not be the best for the sport in general. There have also been many positive areas this year. The association provided umpires to all Hockey Queensland championships and with the U13 championships being held in Brisbane, the opportunity was taken to provide more umpires than we were required to. All of the umpires acquitted themselves well with the majority gaining their first Queensland accreditation or being upgraded. The following umpires were awarded badges in 2005: Badge Open Advanced Senior Intermediate Umpire Colin Murphy Chris Grew Beau Leadbetter Ian Halliday Ricky Dalley Jason Cross Chris Beale Adam Grant Tom King Josh Mason Declan Kilkenny Ethan Trigell Kurtis Ashford Tournament Premier League Under 18 State C'ships Under 18 State C'ships Veterans State C'ships Under 18 State C'ships State Sec Schoolboys Under 15 State C'ships Under 15 State C'ships Under 13 State C'ships Under 13 State C'ships Under 13 State C'ships Under 13 State C'ships Under 13 State C'ships

AD M I N I S T R A T I O N
With the election of Mr. Colin Murphy as President, the 2005 season was the beginning of a new era in the history of the Association. The BHA Office was administered by our General Secretary Kim Rendell and once again he has had to work long hours to maintain the overall business of the Association. The financial side of our association is organised by our Bookkeeper Susan Johnston, and we have an administration Trainee Rachelle Faulks in the office each Friday. The Web site, which Kim maintains has been an outstanding success with all fixtures, Forms and Results posted weekly thus keeping us all up to date. He has also assisted with the maintenance of the Junior and Indoor sites. Competitions Director, Russell Marsden, had fixtures ready in advance and all was ready for the season to commence at the end of February. On the Technical side I was assisted by Clarrie Hicks, Barry Bolton, Karen Kuhn, Russell Marsden and Sasha and Niki Hawgood. I thank them most sincerely for the time they gave to see that games were on time and everything was in order. I would also like to thank Leon and Sue Cross for manning the bench at Burringbar during the finals series. Whilst the fixtures ran well, the big problem was Umpiring. Our senior Umpires were on occasions, away on National and international duties, they were also playing in the competition, some in more than one division, and this left us short of officials. This situation could have been overcome if the players nominated to Umpire in their place had met their commitments. The Technical bench wasted a great deal of time chasing players to fill the gaps. The responsibility to supply Umpires lies with a: the Clubs and b: the named player; if you cant meet your commitment then it is up to you to have a replacement.
Junior
Another positive area is the number of junior players taking up umpiring that resulted in the majority of junior games in the latter part of the season being controlled by these players (where scheduling of games permitted) and taking the pressure off the clubs to provide umpires. This also meant that many of these players umpired during the finals. Finally I would like to thank the umpires for umpiring this season. With more than 95% of the umpires being players as well I can understand the fact that playing is a higher priority than umpiring and I know it is difficult to juggle these and your other commitments. I would also like to thank Steve Faulks for all the phone calls that he made and the time he gave up trying to ensure that umpires were available for BHL1 & 2 games. Hopefully more umpires will put their hands up to fill all the vacant positions on the BHUA executive for the next season and thus the work load will be spread out and everybody will be able to enjoy the season. Have a good off season and come back re-charged to face the new season. Yours in Hockey,
Leon Cross

VETERANS
Brisbane Hockey Association Veterans Sub-Committee Chairmans Report for 2005 follows.
Something to think about is that it is possible that Queensland could host this event in 2007. If not then it will be 2008. These days it runs over two weeks and requires three pitches to schedule the whole thing.
Once again all games were played in a competitive manner but in good spirit, albeit maybe a little slower than in years gone by. Most of the umpiring was done by vets players. Thanks to those who backed up to umpire on a regular basis. Having all games on the one night once again made for a good atmosphere, and we have been fortunate the last couple of years with this scheduling.
Thanks also to BHA for their support and co-operation through the season. Vets do enjoy a degree of autonomy which works well for us and Im sure allows Brisbane Hockey to concentrate on the game at other levels.
One small concern, particularly early in the season was that unavailability of a drink after late games, sometimes even after middle games if you werent on your toes. The Colmslie Sports Club saw the value after a while though, and kept the soft drinks cold for the whole night.
There are probably a few things we can do better next year. One thing that comes to mind is that Im sure we can get a better prepared and better organised team to compete in 45s State Championships.
RESULTS
Brisbane Veterans Premiers for 2005 were Easts in Division One, and Kedron Wavell in Division Two. Grand final night was Tuesday as normal, however starting times for both games were staggered so that we had our presentations under way at a very respectable hour. The hour that it finally wound up wasnt quite so respectable.
In 2006 State Championships are in Mackay for 40s and 55s on May Day weekend, and Sunshine Coast on June Queens Birthday weekend for 45s. Nationals are in Perth commencing 2 October.
In Inter-city competition Brisbane Over 40s were successful in the Coulter Shield, Over 45s finished third in the Bill Bennett Trophy which is run on a format similar to Coulter Shield.
One thing that has been suggested is a weekday afternoon timeslot for older vets to have a casual hit. Maybe one afternoon from 3 or 4 oclock, maybe rotating around Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast. We plan to see how much interest there is in something like this.
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
A combined over 40, over 45 tournament was held in Ipswich on the June long weekend. Brisbane fielded two teams in 40s, and three in 45s. There were some issues and lessons learned with selections for these teams, but overall the participation level was again excellent.
With that, have a great off-season, and lets look forward to doing it again next year.
Gil Voysey
Brisbane Veterans Committee Chairperson
Congratulations to the 40s first team, led by Greg Morgan, who won the State Championship. The second 40s team also performed really strongly.
In the 45 section the results were less impressive, with number one team placed fifth.
A separate event was held in Townsville in late July for over 55 division. We had a team travel up from Brisbane for the weekend to finish third in a six team round robin competition.

JUNIORS
Sandy Ottaway together with Greg organized the rep transport and
accommodation for U13, U15 and U18. Sandy was very active in many areas of the association.
Season 2005 welcomed Duncan Campbell (Records Secretary) and Kevin Kilkenny (Registrations Officer) to the committee, and with the heavy representative program in Brisbane, the year was going to be challenging.
Shelley Torrisi in her role as uniform officer, making sure all our
young men were outfitted with their Brisbane uniforms for the representative season. Peggy Morley supported Shelley in this role.
Lex Barney, regional coaching director, for his work in all areas (U7
to U18) of development and coaching. His efforts and support are much appreciated.
The club delegates for their valued input, on behalf of all clubs, into
The representative season started with the AHL finals at the State Hockey Centre and the association provided ball boys, organized and managed by Bill and June Grant. The boys were well rewarded after the final with various attire and equipment from many of the players. The association fielded three teams in the U13 and U15 Coulter Shield and State Championships, and two teams in the U11 Coulter Shield. Brisbane hosted the U13 Coulter Shield, and U13 State Championships as well as the Sydney visit. Congratulations to all involved: players, coaches, managers, selectors, umpires, support staff and supporters. the association.
Our sponsors Lance and his team at Just Hockey for their valued
support of BJHA. Owen Jennings, Step Ahead Security and Craig Munro, Flick, for providing shirts and caps for the representative teams.
To Colin Murphy, Kim Rendell and the BHA Board for their ongoing
support and understanding of the needs of the Junior Association.
Under the direction of Greg Swann the U13 State Championships were conducted at the State Hockey Centre in June. The committee decided to run the championships from within our junior ranks which was a huge effort by all involved. Thanks to June Grant and the BJHA committee, the U13 parent support group guided by Tracy and Trevor Wallis, Norm Ludwig, Ann King, Peggy Morley and the many others, who organised a very successful and friendly titles. Thanks to Hockey Queensland and Colmslie Sports Club for their support.
The committee looks forward to your continued support and involvement in the years ahead.
Barry Bolton
Director of Juniors (BJHA President)
The junior organisation relies heavily on volunteers in order to manage the sport. The contribution of the committee this year has been excellent with all members accepting several roles throughout the season. But as we all know it requires many people to contribute many quality hours in all areas of the sport for the association to operate efficiently. Over the last two years I have observed a new culture, especially in the U7 to U13 age groups. The support for each other amongst the clubs and their willingness to volunteer for the association is certainly encouraging for the future management of the sport.
I would like to acknowledge the many volunteers for their dedication and contributions throughout the season.

players. Congratulations to all these boys. Queensland went on to win the carnival.
I have pleasure in submitting this report on the activities of the Association for the 2005 season.
Brisbane held an excellent Under 13 Championship and thank you to all those workers who made it such a success. The 2006 Under 13 Championship will be held in Atherton we will be only taking 2 teams.
Every club increased their junior player numbers except for Valley (decreased by 5 players) and Logan who did not have any junior boys teams this year.
To our coaches Col Morley, Bill Tomkins, Glenys Harten, Assistant Coach Geoff Grant, Managers Len Coomber, Bart Karadzic and John Donald thank you for all your efforts.
This year saw the introduction of J grades although we have 78 extra players we have 1 less team registered than in 2004. Last year 2004 we had 8 Under 17 teams and 12 Under 15 teams a total of 20 teams this year in J1, J2 and J3 there was a total 18 team a loss of 2 teams The age group which picked up an extra team was Under 11 with 11 teams this year compared to 10 teams in 2004.
Three players were selected in the Queensland team to play in the National Championships at the State Hockey Centre Brisbane from 15th September to 24th September they were Lachlan Morley, Andrew Newman, Jacob Webber. Shadows were Bryce Ottaway and Jacob Whetton (Jacob was called into the Queensland team for the Championships) one player was selected in the Talent Identification Squad Mitchell Grant. Congratulations to all these boys. Queensland went on to win the Under 15 National Championships.
PLAYING SEASON
The season commenced on Saturday 9th April 2005 with J 1 commencing Sunday 10th April. Congratulations to Rockhampton on a successful Championship. The 2006 Championship will be held at Gympie.
We tried to keep the age grades playing at the same time each week with Minkeys at 8:30am and Under 9s at 9:30am each week at Shaw Park Under 11s were at 10:30am and 11:40am with Under 13 (2) at 11:40am all at Shaw Park. Under 13 (1) played all their games on the turf at 8:00am when the turf was available with J2 games 9:15am and 10:45am. J3 had a mixture of turf and grass games with some games on Sunday mornings and some on Saturdays.
To Regional Coaching Director Lex Barney who also helped the coaches at the Under 13 and Under 15 championships and we thank him also.
INTERCITY MATCHES
This year saw another busy intercity programme. Our annual intercity matches with Sydney saw us win both the Under 13 and Under 15 Shield. This year they were played in Brisbane at the State Hockey Centre.
Grass semi-finals were played at Shaw Park with the turf games played at the State Hockey Centre with 1 J3 game at Burringbar turf on Saturday 20th August. J1 semi-finals were played at the State Hockey Centre on Sunday 21st August.
