ILLUMINATI 12
About Us
Illuminati [ih-loo-muh-nah-tee, -ney-tahy], literally: the enlightened ones, from illminre: to illuminate. The Illuminati has been widely associated by the public with the sinister secret society formed during the Enlightenment-era. Whilst the populace blindly indulges in voicing out their criticism against this mysterious union, the etymon of the term is generally being overpassed and neglected. The word Illuminati derives from the plural form of a Latin word -- The Illuminatus. We, as devoted members of HKUGA Colleges proposed student council cabinet of this year, selected Illuminati as our cabinets name despite the general misconceptions because of the terms literal translation: The Enlightened Ones. Our team assures the entire student and staff body that we are bright, confident individuals that could bring upon constructive changes to HKUGA College and persist on fine etiquettes from the past years. Below shows the list of Illuminatis executive members: Post Name President Edmond Leung Vice President for External Affairs Stefan Luk Vice President for Internal Affairs Marisa Chan Chairperson of the Aesthetic Board Adam Kor Chairperson of the Club Board Maple Wong Chairperson of the House Board Celeste Lam Chairperson of the Promotion Board Sheleoni Chung Chairperson of the Publicity Board Jaimie Chan Chairperson of the Social Board Amy Lau Chairperson of the Welfare Board Theresa Au Young Secretary Christine Cheng Treasurer Cyrus Fung * Our proposed student council cabinet uses the name solely for the implication in its literal English translation and has ABSOLUTELY no connection to the New World Order or the Bavarian Illuminati *

ILLUMINATI 12
Our Mission The U.G.A Scheme
To

Unite

Illuminati functions to unite students in order to foster a compatible, dynamic, and progressive school environment. We stress on developing a compacted and open school structure where students can unite, regardless of age and grades. Our team puts great emphasis on liaison to ensure the cause of concerted actions among pupils, teachers, senior officers and parents. In addition, illuminati aims to provide better communication with exterior student bodies to expose students to the Hong Kong students culture. We dream that as students graduate batch by batch, they will proclaim their love and affection to a school they are proud of. Under the To Unite framework, Illuminati has developed activities to promote our school spirit, including the Spirit Week, teachers versus students activities, post exam activities, joint school events and much, much more. To

Give

Illuminati urges to establish a mutually giving process to allow students to take the initiative in school and academic life. We encourage students to give: to give rise to their talents, to give constructive criticism to improve the school environment, and to give for a charitable cause. All in all, we want students to actively participate in school affairs and preside over decisions that impinge upon their academic and school life. With their voices taken into account, students will be able to enjoy school life and be passionate for their academic studies. Under the To Give framework, Illuminati has planned activities to grant students the opportunity to give, which includes the Classroom Decoration Competition, Halloween Bazaar, Christmas Carnival, Cupids Carnival, Charity Week, and the Talent Quest. To boost

Awareness

Illuminati envisions a school where students are well informed and equipped with global minds. Wed like to raise students awareness, as much as ours, to academic- related issues, and ongoing matters that are revolving around the world. Through providing students with concise information, we ensure that students are making the right decision over the course of their secondary school lives, and that they have broadened their horizons to benefit their general studies. Under the To boost Awareness framework, Illuminati exposes students to knowledge and practical actions through a series of activities, including the Subject Choice Sharing, Eco-Week and other effective policies.

Entrance fee will be charged for $10. 2) Piata Auction The goal of this activity is to remind students to let go of their regrets, raise money for charities and of course to have a bit of fun. It will be held at the amphitheater. We will ask help from the art students (if possible) to make a paper mch in the shape of a pumpkin which will then be filled with candies. We will then start handing out paper slips to students a week before 31/10 where they can write down their regrets of the past year and then it will be stuck onto the paper mch. On Halloween day, there will be an auction period during lunch. Subject Choice Sharing
Head Organizer: Cyrus Fung The aims of this event is to let the junior students to understand better the electives that they are going to take in S4, and to provide a chance for the senior students to solve any queries from other students. In order to let our junior students fully understand and receive first-hand data about their electives, a sharing about the electives that they are going to take in S4 is needed. Month: November Time: Lunchtime (possibly DEAR time or Assembly) Venue: Amphitheater/ Hall We are planning to invite students, who is currently studying in different electives or those who have graduated, to give junior students, especially S3 students, a word on their experience, a brief description and explanation on what the elective will cover, as well as suggestions to them. During the sharing, senior students are going to answer questions and queries from the junior form in details, and give suggestions and opinions to in choosing their electives so that they can fully comprehend the information received. In addition, the sharing can cover those subjects that are not covered or implemented in the junior secondary, such as Liberal Studies, Mathematics Module 1 or Module 2. These subjects are not explained by teachers which affect junior form to make up their mind in their choosing their ideal subjects, and may actually harden them when they are unsure about the subjects. Through the sharing from their predecessor, all of the above misgivings are solved. We propose to cooperate with the school for this event to prevent clashing with the schools arrangement.

Promotion Plan
To ensure the junior form will not miss this beneficial event, we are planning to use posters as one of the means to advertise. In addition, we are putting this event on our Facebook page so as to notify them instantly. If possible, we will like to remind students the particular subject of sharing through the daily bulletin on that day so that if they have no idea about the sharing, they can read the necessary information on the bulletin.

Page 11

ILLUMINATI 12
Risk Management
There are several problems and obstacles that have to be solved and tackled. The first problem is as students are promoted to senior secondary; the learning schedule is much tighter which they will be much busier than before. There are very great possibilities that they can squeeze no time out for the sharing. To encounter this, we have contacted with some former graduates to share with the lower form. Besides, lower forms may have no time to attend the sharing since the lunchtime is not enough to finish the sharing, even if we use up the whole lunchtime. To solve this, we are proposing to occupy the DEAR Time or pastoral time on that day.

Therefore we highly recommend teachers to inform and distribute homework and notes to students via e-class in order to minimize the use of paper and ink. Risk management 1) Mock papers, quizzes, UT and circulars. As weve mentioned above, we wont be forcing anyone from using the printer, but we suggest other alternatives. Charity Week
Head Organizers: Stefan Luk, Marisa Chan The charity week this year aims to continue the traditions of past student council of raising money for the needed. Through different activities planned, Illuminati wishes to increase interactions between teachers and students while raising students' awareness to social issues. Month: April Time: Lunchtime Venue: Amphitheater 1) No- Shave April Originally introduced by, Movember, the idea of no-shave has been a well-received fund-raising activity which evokes laughter and joy. Unlike other activities in the Charity Week, the no-shave activity will be a month-long event. We propose to raise and meet a certain amount of funds during the last week of March, serving to sponsor teachers to actively participate in the event. The whole notion of no shaving is to allow students to understand what we can do to fight for a charitable cause. Teachers forgo their hygiene and outlook to indirectly support charities. The timetable is listed as follows: Date 18- 22/ 3 5/ 4 8- 30/ 4 Promotion Plan l l Risk Management Difficulty: Cleanliness and tidiness of appearance Solution: The no-shave event is only a once-in-a-year activity. We hope the school can put aside problems of indecent appearances, as the event bears the means to raise money for the people in need. In addition, untidy appearances can serve as an example as to what students should not be following. 2) Raffle Ticket Selling raffle tickets has been a popular fundraising tool, known for the little effort required to organize it. We suggest selling 300 raffle tickets during the charity week, at a price of five dollars each. The prizes of the raffle campaign shall include, but does not limit to: lunch coupons, tokens to participate free in other fundraising activities, or other gifts donated by students. It is possible to cooperate with the PTA to purchase prizes for winners. Illuminati will be in charge of selling raffle tickets. The raffle will be drawn at the second last day of charity week, where students will be awarded with their prizes immediately. Promotion Plan l l Risk Management Difficulty: difficulty in selling tickets Solution: Attractive prizes can appeal to students, and increase their incentives to purchase raffle tickets. 3) Student Versus Teacher Kingball Competition Kingball is a tradition of our school culture yet only students participate in it during house competitions. To promote the bonding between teachers and students, we also want teachers to participate in it during charity week. Students can vote for the list of teachers by inserting money into boxes with their names a week in advance. Twelve teachers with the highest amount of money will have to participate in the competition. For students, we suggest each house send two representatives. The timetable is listed as followed: Date 18- 22/ 3 5/ 4 10/4 Detail Donation boxes (with teachers name) set up outside the activity center Announce participating staff Kingball match Posters which explains the attractive prizes involved Members of the council will sell tickets around the school

We will use a transparent plastic container which contains certain amount of sweets. By observations, students can guess the amount of sweets by paying $5 for every turn. Names and classes will be recorded. At the end of the week, the person who gave the closest guess will be awarded with all the sweets in the container. It will be a great opportunity for students to develop their logic skills as well as the aptitude to think critically. Since senior students are rather busy academically, we promote this activity mainly to junior students. The Game Students will receive a riddle from the school bulletin in the morning and the solution of the riddle is where the treasure is hidden. There are three discussing topics proposed, we will further decide one topic for the discussion: The rationale behind the End of World. There are three parties in this discussion: Commercial: it is a commercial strategy to emphasize people to enjoy their live and promote the value to materialism Religious: it was written by the bible or the folk legend and symbolize the god will penalize human because of their crimes and its time to repent. Environmental: it is because human are wasting the world resources and pollution which causes the earth crisis.

Policies

1) Extension ACT
The Room Locking Policy is a new policy established this year. The policy states that classroom will be locked after 4pm unless there are ELA activities in the classroom. From the figure on the right, which has been reposted by many students on Facebook, we know that most of our students are against the policy and find them unacceptable. As the members of the proposed student council, Illuminati hopes to strive for our students yet be the medium for the school and students to communicate. Therefore, we hope to endeavor a balance between both the student body and the school. Illuminati suggests that students can form their own study groups after school and inform their class teachers. After gaining approval from the school, they can stay in their classroom after school till at most 5:30pm. If the self-study group is found to be doing inappropriate behaviors, consequences shall be made by the teachers in charge.

2) Transparency ACT
Over the years, students have felt that the school trips are immensely expensive. While illuminati puts students interest as the top priority and wishes to reduce the fees of school trips, past student councils have depicted the difficulty to do so. This year, instead of demanding a reduction to trip fees, illuminati urges the school to publish an expense table to achieve full fiscal transparency. This would effectively reveal the whereabouts of money, and have students decide whether the trips are worth the money.

3) Effective study ACT

Last year, many students were unprepared for exams, as the exam timetables were distributed only two weeks before. Illuminati insists that the school distribute exam timetables at least one month prior to the exams with the purpose of better time management and more effective studying.

4) WI-FI coverage ACT

Illumianti understands that a lot of students would like to do projects and study through using computers/ laptops. However the Wi-Fi service is only available in the school library and computer labs. It is indeed

Page 43

ILLUMINATI 12
every inconvenient if student want to use computers in classrooms or other areas of the school campus. Therefore we propose the school to expand the Wi-Fi coverage to the entire campus. We understand the concern from the school that students may misuse the Wi-Fi hence we suggest the school to provide login numbers and passwords for every students and limit the time of coverage everyday (for instance, available during lunchtime and afterschool).

5) Queue- Free ACT

The long queue during lunchtime has never been solved and has always been a problem that our students struggle with. At the moment, there are two queues for lunch tickets, two queues for rice, one queue for noodles and one queue for drinks and sandwiches. Since all students (S1-S6) have their lunch period at the same time, it is not surprising to have this problem. However, queuing wastes a lot of time which distracts students schedule. The queue for drinks and sandwiches has always been the longest queue among, so we suggest that one more queue should be set near activity center selling drinks and sandwiches as well. Due to the fact that they are only dry food, there will be no difficulty in the transferring process thus do not take much time. Only tables and chairs are required to set up a station. One possible limitation is that the station outside activity center cannot sell cold drinks where setting up a fridge is too troublesome. As a result, the aim of the station is only to reduce the queue for sandwiches and drinks (room temperature).

6) Renewal ACT
To enjoy discounts, shops and restaurants require students to show their student cards. However, our current student cards are not up- to- date, as the stamped dates are of the previous few years. Illuminati urges the school to renew the student cards very three years, and renew the date shown on the card annually.

7) Sandwich Needs Love ACT

As the number of student increases, students often find the canteen too crowded for a comfortable and pleasant lunch. Not only does it take very long to queue up for food, it is also rather troublesome to find seats at the canteen. Therefore, some students would prefer bringing sandwiches on their own. It would be much more convenient if classrooms allow students to eat sandwiches in their classrooms, especially when they need to focus on their work, it will be less time consuming. Sanitation is always the main concern about eating upstairs. We believe that students are mature enough to manage their own food and hygiene of their classroom; Sandwich are handy and easy to eat, it is not likely for them to make a mess, and after all they themselves would have to use that classroom for learning. So it may be a good idea to give this policy a try, if it doesnt work out, we are more than willing to agree on withdrawing the policy.

Page 44

ILLUMINATI 12

8) Club system reformation

School is a place where students can learn, develop academically and morally, that is the reason why we have ELAs and different teachers to support us. Although we really have much support on developing students in different aspect, some of the student may have other interest outside school that is why a good club system is needed. In the past few years, we have club systems where student can set up a formal and official group to exchange their interest and idea, but there are so little people to sign up to form a club by themselves, the reason is the submission process is too complicated and we hadnt do much on promotion. To improve the system, we need a reformation. Simplify Submission Process To form a club by students, only a form will be required to fill-in, and a club will then be form after approved by school. Team Structure l l l l Chairperson Vice Chairperson (Minimum 1, maximum 2) Secretary 10 or above members (including Chairperson, Vice and secretary)

Operation The leader or the person in charge has the responsibility to take attendance of his/her members in each meeting. All expenditure of the club shall be marked down and clearly explain the used of money, by secretary, in order to receive a refund. Regulation In order to keep our clubs active and consistent, we required our clubs to have 8 or more meetings per year. Only by that can the club be recognized and would be able to put the students position in the club into his/her report card. Financial Support The school can fund club expenses as long as a financial report is provided and the school approves the expenditure. The financial report shall include breakdown budget and explanation of the use of fund. Receipts shall also be kept and submitted alongside with the financial report or else the expenditure may not be recognized thus the request of refund may not be accepted. Promotion

Page 45

ILLUMINATI 12
We understand that recruiting members for clubs may not be easy, but the student council will give you full support. We provide the opportunity to have club leaders to introduce their club during assembly (in November), and recruitment will we held within the whole November, deadline will be 30/11. The student council is willing to support our clubs to hold large-scale event to get more students involved. ELA Market We propose introducing clubs into the ELA market to allow more students to be exposed to new clubs. Furthermore, clubs can attract more students to participate. *Example HKUGA College 2012 2013 Club Application Form Club is a platform where student can share their interest and aspirations To form a club, students will have to fill in the form below and submit it to the Student Council. Upon approval by the school, the club is established. Club Name: Venue: (please refer to details) Post Chairperson Vice Vice* Secretary Members: Name Description of club: Class (no.) Name Class (no.) Name Class (no.)

*The second vice chairperson is optional.
