Leadership Training Course outlines By Cpl.

Alexander Engel 7th CMBG TacHel 400 Sqn Introduction In this lesson we will learn the very basics of military leadership, this is necessary to have a cohesive leadership within the 7thCMBG. Especially the younger leader within the 7th without military experience will have the chance to broaden their knowledge about leadership; as such this lesson is only going over the very basic principles.

1. What is leadership in the Military Military leadership is the process of influencing others to accomplish the mission by providing purpose, direction, and motivation. Or as General Dwight D. Eisenhower said it; "Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it Group Interaction; - What does leadership mean to you - how does age and experience influence the view that your troops have of you as a leader Timeframe 10 min

2. Which skills and character traits must a military leader possess? In addition to the four traits that every Soldier is expected to have, which are; -Courage: overcoming fears of bodily harm and doing your duty (physical courage), and overcoming fears of other than bodily harm (moral courage) while doing what ought to be done -Candor: is being frank, open, honest, and sincere with your soldiers, seniors and peers -Competence: is proficiency in required professional knowledge, judgment, and skills -Commitment: means the dedication to carry out all unit missions and to serve the values of the unit, Military, and the country Military leaders need the following traits; -Honesty: Display sincerity, integrity, and candor in all your actions. Deceptive behavior will not inspire trust. -Inspiring: Display confidence in all that you do. By showing endurance you will inspire others to reach for new heights. Take charge when necessary. -Intelligence: Read, study, and seek challenging assignments. -Fair-mindedness: Show fair treatment to all people. Prejudice is the enemy of justice. -Straightforward: Use sound judgment to make a good decision at the right time.

Group discussion; what makes the leadership in the Environment of the 7thCMBG easier/ harder and how can we make those differences work for us. What is sometimes the problem in dealing with younger Soldiers Examples; Age difference within the 7th, Experience levels, availability of weapons, being a clone soldier respawn heroes Timeframe 15 minutes

3. Different kinds of Leadership and what factors influence our decision when to use which

The four different kinds of Leadership are; Authoritarian or autocratic I tell you what to do and how to do it Participative or democratic We need to accomplish Goal X, what are your Ideas? Delegative or Free Reign I want you to do XYZ while I am doing ABC A combination of all three

Every Leadership style has its place when it should be used. Factors deciding when to use which are; Examples: Time to accomplish the task Experience level of the group Experience level of the leader The type of task that has to be accomplished

Afghanistan; Combat Patrol under fire Bootcamp; Basic Weapons Training FOB; routine maintenance of a LAV

4. Group Building Exercise Goal: to give the HQ of the 7th CMBG a rough idea who will take the reigns, who is follower leader and how does the group work in solving problems together

Preparation: Class gets split into smaller groups in separate channels Idealy in every channel will be one Supervisor from the HQ that does not participate, alternatively session could be recorded.
