Prerequisite: CSCI04 Issue No: 01 Lecture Units: 2

1.0 Course Description This course introduces students to database systems. The course explains what a database system is and then proceeds to the greater part of the materials to explore relational database systems - database designed according to the relational (tabular) model. The material includes discussions of SQL, the Structured Query Language, as well as a unit of database design. From data abstraction, the course then turns to transaction management, with some additional material for improving query performance. Finally, there is an intro duction of up-to-date trends in database systems and recent developments in the large history of data storage technology. 2.0 Course Objectives At the end of the term, the students should be able to a. Learn to use database management software to develop data-intensive applications; b. Become familiar with fundamental DBMS concepts; and c. Gain exposure to future trends in databases.
