COURTNEY LUSKIN, RENSSELAER COUNTY DAIRY PRINCESS TALKS ABOUT GOING GREEN: Today the new thing is to go green or save the earth and energy. So, you may ask yourself what are dairy farms doing to go green, well they are not painting their cows green. Farmers are some of the best environmental stewards of the earth. They work hard to protect the land, air, and water for their farm, family, communities, and for the earth. Farmers work hard to maximize crop yields while minimizing impact to their land and the environment. Some have even turned to alternate sources of energy such as wind or solar power. Farmers also use methane or anaerobic digesters, which take a gas, from the manure that cows produce and make energy. This process reduces to manure odor while generating power for the farm and most often the local community. Farmers care for the land just as much as they do for their animals. Farms work hard every day to produce a wholesome product, milk while being the best environmental stewards. Wagner Dairy Farm located in Rensselaer County has an anaerobic digester, that they installed in the fall of 2010. The Wagners operate a family dairy farm that milks about 350 cows and raises about 300 young stock in Poestenkill. They use digested manure that comes out of the machine that has the liquid removed as bedding for the cows and the liquid is then used as fertilizer. Fertilizer is used in their fields to help increase the yield and growth of the plants and cut down on purchased fertilizer they might need. The crops are grown to feed their cows and heifers that will then produce milk and manure. The milk comes to us in the store or is used to make cheese, yogurt, or another dairy product. HISTORY OF THE CAR RADIO. One evening, in 1929, two young men named William Lear and Elmer Wavering drove their girlfriends to a lookout point high above the Mississippi River town of Quincy, Illinois, to watch the sunset. It was a romantic night to be sure, but one of the women observed that it would be even nicer if they could listen to music in the car. Lear and Wavering liked the idea. Both men had tinkered with radios (Lear had served as a radio operator in the U.S. Navy during World War I) so it wasnt long before they were taking apart a home radio and trying to get it to work in a car. But it wasnt as easy as it sounds: Automobiles have ignition switches, generators, spark plugs, and other electrical equipment that generate noisy static interference, making it nearly impossible to listen to the radio when the engine was running. One by one, Lear and Wavering identified and eliminated each source of electrical interference.When they finally got their radio to work, they took it to a radio convention in Chicago. There they met Paul Galvin, owner of Galvin Manufacturing Corporation. He made a product called a battery eliminator a device that allowed battery-powered radios to run on household AC current. But as more homes were wired for electricity more radio manufacturers made AC-powered radios.Galvin needed a new product to manufacture.When he met Lear and Wavering at the radio convention, he found it.He believed that massproduced, affordable car radios had the potential to become a huge business.Lear and Wavering set up shop in Galvins factory, and when they perfected their first radio, they installed it in his Studebaker. Galvin drove his Studebaker nearly 800 miles to Atlantic City to show off the radio at the 1930 Radio Manufacturers Association convention. Too broke to afford a booth, he parked the car outside the convention hall and cranked up the radio so that passing conventioneers could hear it.That idea worked He got enough orders to put the radio into production. In those days many companies in the phonograph and radio businesses used the suffix ola for their names Radiola, Columbiola, and Victrola were three of the biggest. Galvin decided to do the same thing, and since his radio was intended for use in a motor vehicle, he decided to call it the Motorola. Selling complicated car radios that cost 20 percent of the price of a brand-new car wouldnt have been easy in the best of times, let alone during the Great Depression Galvin lost money in 1930 and struggled for a couple of years after that. But things picked up in 1933 when Ford began offering Motorolas pre-installed at the factory. In 1934 they got another boost when Galvin struck a deal with B.F. Goodrich tire company to sell and install them in its chain of tire stores. By then the price of the radio, installation included, had dropped to $55. The Motorola car radio was off and running.(The name of the company would be officially changed from Galvin Manufacturing to Motorola in 1947.)In the meantime,Galvin continued to develop new uses for car radios.In 1936, the same year that it introduced push-button tuning, it also introduced the Motorola Police Cruiser, a standard car radio that was factory preset to a single frequency to pick up police broadcasts.In 1940 he developed with the first handheld twoway radio The Handie-Talkie for the U. S. Army. A lot of the communications technologies that we take for granted today were born in Motorola labs in the years that followed World War II. In 1947 they came out with the first television to sell under $200.In 1956 the company introduced the worlds first pager;in 1969 it supplied the radio and television equipment that was used to televise Neil Armstrongs first steps on the Moon.In 1973 it invented the worlds first handheld cellular phone.Today Motorola is one of the largest cell phone manufacturers in the world And it all started with the car radio.WHATEVER HAPPENED TO The two men who installed the first radio in Paul Galvins car? Elmer Wavering and William Lear ended up taking very different paths in life.Wavering stayed with Motorola. In the1950s he helped change the automobile experience again when he developed the first automotive alternator, replacing inefficient and unreliable generators.The invention lead to such luxuries as power windows, power seats, and,eventually, air-conditioning. Lear also continued inventing. He holds more than 150 patents. Remember eight-track tape players? Lear invented that. But what hes really famous for are his contributions to the field of aviation.He invented radio direction finders for planes, aided in the invention of the autopilot, designed the first fully automatic aircraft landing system,and in 1963 introduced his most famous invention of all, the Lear Jet,the worlds first mass-produced, affordable business jet. (Not bad for a guy who dropped out of school after the eighth grade.)

A CHILL HAS SETTLED OVER THE CCC. Its that Halloween time of year again. Fear This productions has taken over the entire CCC and turned it into a scary place for the third year in a row. This year features an even bigger outdoor maze and many surprises lurking indoors. Rik Sassa and Glenn Cruise have been doing a lot of scaring over the years, providing chills and entertainment. Frights and laughs abound in this fundraiser to benefit the CCC. The Haunt is open from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm on Friday and Saturday evenings in October: 12 & 13, 19 & 20, 26 & 27, and Sunday, October 28 as well. The admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 13 and under , and $25 for families (parents or caretaker and children). Shouldnt the President and the so-called press corps be using the U-6 unemployment definition rather than the U-3? I wonder. The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases a bunch of different unemployment numbers every month.The unemployment number that is most often used in the media (and by the government) is known as the "U-3". However, the "U-6" is considered to be a broader measure of the unemployment situation in the United States because the "U-6" includes two groups of people that the "U-3" does not: 1. "Marginally attached workers" - people who are not actively looking for work, but who have indicated that they want a job and have looked for work (without success) sometime in the past 12 months. This class also includes "discouraged workers" who have completely given up on finding a job because they feel that they just won't find one. 2. People who are looking for full-time work but have to settle on a part-time job due to economic reasons. This means that they want full-time work, but can't find it. Two pretty important groups of people, wouldnt you agree? The "official" unemployment number is the "U-3" - this was 8.1% in February. The "U6" was an eye-opening 14.8% in February. Friday the BLS ("Bureau of Labor Statistics") released the September unemployment report, reporting that the national unemployment rate dropped to 7.8% in September - a drop of 0.3%. The BLS also reported that total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 114,000 last month. Wait a second, you are probably asking - how did the national unemployment rate drop 0.3% (which is a very big drop) when total nonfarm payroll employment rose by just 114,000? The answer to this question has many people howling this morning, alleging that the Obama administration is fudging the numbers in order to help his re-election campaign. Let's look to the numbers to try and figure out what went on. According to the BLS, "total employment rose by 873,000 in September, following 3 months of little change." Also, "the number of persons employed part time for economic reasons rose from 8.0 million in August to 8.6 million in September." These are people who want full time jobs but can only find part time work - so, according to the BLS, 600,000 people who want full time employment took a part-time job in September in order to help make ends meet. According to the BLS, "the number of persons unemployed for less than 5 weeks declined by 302,000 over the month to 2.5 million". The BLS also said in Friday's report that nonfarm payroll employment for July was revised from +141,000 to +181,000, while nonfarm payroll employment for August was revised from +96,000 to +142,000. According to the BLS, the total civilian labor force was 155,063,000 in September.The total number of "employed" in September was 142,974,000, up dramatically from 142,101,000 the month before. As multiple publications have noted, this was the highest such jump in nearly 30 years.The total number of "unemployed" dropped from 12,544,000 to 12,088,000 in September. The total number of people not in the labor force declined from 88,921,000 to 88,710,000. To try and get a handle on what took place in September, let's look to the U-6 unemployment rate, which is more comprhensive. According to the BLS, the U-6 unemployment rate was unchanged in September at 14.7%, while the "official" unemployment rate dropped from 8.1% to 7.8%.The U-6 unemployment rate counts a couple of groups of people as "unemployed" or "underemployed" that the "official" rate doesn't, including: -people who are employed part time but want full time work -people who are "marginally attached" to the workforce. These are people who are not currently looking for work but want a job and are available for a job and have looked for a job sometime in the past 12 months. So, if I want full-time work but have to settle for a 10 hour/week job working at a gas station, I am not counted as being "unemployed" in the "official" numbers. Or, if I have completely given up on finding a job because the current labor market is horrible, I am also not counted as being "unemployed" in the official unemployment numbers. So, in closing, the 600k jump in people who want full-time work but were only able to find part-time jobs in September was the main reason why the national unemployment rate plummeted. Move these people to the "employed" column and the unemployment rate plummets. So, in reality, the unemployment figure is closer to 14%. Either way, the rate is way too high!
