Dear Classified Guys, I slap mud onto walls for a living, not real mud, but joint compound. I'm one of those guys that finish drywall. Yes it's messy, but the work is pretty steady considering I work independently. Most of my clients are homeowners who see my ad in the classifieds and then want me to help finish a room they started or hang drywall in the addition they're building. The problem is that just about every homeowner I meet complains about money, their mortgage, the cost of living, and oh yeah, my rate! I'm priced less than all of my competitors, but my clients still want me to cut my price so they can save a few bucks. To be honest, I'm not very good at fielding complaints so I usually give them a break, even though they live in a nicer house than mine. Any suggestions on how I should be handling these customers? Students Collect Food For Needy

While many schools are finding ways to incorporate technology into the classroom, students in Jonathan Stovalls class at Parker-Bennett-Curry Elementary School use iPads every day. Last fall, Stovalls classroom became the first in Bowling Green Independent Schools to have an iPad for each student. Principal Cheri Smith bought 23 iPads using site-based funds after approval from the Site-Based Decision-Making Council. Stovall said it was a good investment. The engagement level in our classroom has gone up tremendously, he said. Students have gained a sense of responsibility and confidence. Fourth grader Tiesha Dunn said the iPad helps her stay focused and pay attention and its more fun than working on paper. Instead of doing paperwork, you can do it on a touchable screen, Tiesha said.

Cumberland Trace Elementary 6th graders Ryleigh Skaggs and Hannah Neighbors spearheaded a canned food drive that resulted in nearly 900 cans of food being delivered to the Salvation Army. The girls conducted the food drive throughout April. With the help of Warren County Public Schools Food Service Supervisor Kelly Holt, they delivered the food to the Salvation Army on May 18. Principal Dr. Mary Evans says this project got the entire school involved. Ryleigh and Hannah took the initiative on a project that will help a lot of people, Evans says. This was a good way to synergize, because it got all students involved. These girls are full of energy and enthusiasm, and they are motivated to help others. They will be leaders in life.

Greenwood High...
Greenwood High School students and staff celebrated the schools diversity with an International Day in April. Students from many countries dressed in their native clothing, shared traditional songs and dances, and sampled food from many other countries. Organized by English as a Second Language teachers, Shelly Towe and Rhodora Bond, the event educated students about the various cultures represented at the school.

100-Year Anniversary
In March, 100 Girl Scouts formed a friendship circle in Bowling Greens Circus Square Park to celebrate the first Girl Scout meeting on March 12, 1912. At the same time, girls in the other 14 counties of Caveland Service Center were also participating in a commemorative friendship circle. Juliette Gordon Low, Girl Scout founder, recognized and filled the need for an organization that encouraged strength and leadership in women. 100 years later Girl Scouting is being reorganized to be ready for the next century. The initiative ToGetHerThere asks supporters to promise to learn about issues important for girls. Several hundred middle school and high school students designed ads for local businesses to compete in Design An Ad. First place ads are printed in a special section of Country Peddler. During the month of January, the top 3 ads for each business were displayed at the Capitol Arts Center. In January, a pizza reception was held to honor the award winning participants. This project has received national recognition for Creative Education/ Business Partnerships.

About the Leader in Me

Warren East High senior Tyler Phelps bowled a perfect 300 game January 26 in a match against Greenwood, making him the 1st Warren County bowler to record a 300 game and only the 2nd in Kentucky high school bowling. I was relaxed and just had a good day, explained Phelps. I had come close before. Indeed, Phelps feat was no fluke. He has a 202 average, and his previous best game was 280. He has been bowling competitively in the Saturday morning youth league at Southern Lanes since 2008. He has helped Warren East excel in this first year of high school bowling in Kentucky.

Thirty-five Warren Central High students spent the day May 15 at Western Kentucky Universitys outdoors course, doing team-building and confidence-building activities on the low elements, high ropes and zipline. The students are in William Howards Outdoors Class or in Mike Rogers dropout prevention program called Jobs for Americas Graduates.

Oakland Elementary...
Oakland 4th grader Alyssa Sterchi was recognized in May for her successful campaign to help a local foster care agency collect backpacks and bags for foster children. Alyssa heard about the Carry-On Campaign sponsored by South Central Bank and conducted by NECCO, a private foster care agency, and she organized a project at her school to help NECCOs campaign. She was able to collect more than 30 carry-on bags, backpacks, and small luggage items that will be donated to NECCO. The bags will be given to foster children who do not have bags to carry their belongings as they move into foster homes. People like Alyssa inspire others to donate, says NECCO Home Resource Coordinator Hollie Harrison, who came to Oakland to present a plaque to Alyssa. This shows other children that they can do it as well.

Team wins Physics Olympics

The Warren Central team of (from left) Brett Riley, Dzenana Kadric, Keiti Rueter and Tianna Poole won 1st place at Western Kentucky Universitys Physics Olympics, held February 18. Each student earned a $600 scholarship to WKU. This is the 3rd straight year and the 10th time in the last 11 years that a WCHS team has won the Physics Olympics. The WCHS team of Josh Lincoln, Emily Maulden, Alec Minnicks and Amer Salihovic took 2nd place, defeating a team from Greenwood and a combination team made up of South Warren and Bowling Green students.

Alvaton Robotics Teams competed at the Regional RCX Robot Challenge Extreme at Todd County High School in March, with one team taking 1st place and the other finishing as runner-up. They competed at the state competition in Lexington. Members of the 1st place team are Nick Barth, Victoria Bucklew, Ellie Skean and Caleb Timberlake. Members of the runner-up team: Mitchel Dodson, Cooper Jack Moore, Ben Morrison and Jack Tinsley. The teams were coached by Alvaton Elementary Curriculum Coordinator Darlene Porter.
