Oh, Oranges!
Though stockings today are filled with everything from Gummi
Bears to iPods, tucked in the bottom of some is still an age-old
delicacy: a fresh, shiny orange. Toys and gadgets come and go, but
oranges endure. Here’s why we cherish this tasty tradition.

“It’s amazing how many people make
(holiday decorating) complicated,” says
Standolyn Robertson, president of the Na-

ers. “If we can get people to think ‘simple
and sophisticated’ rather than ‘over the top,’
they can set themselves up for a stress-free
holiday.”

Top Clean
“A clean home is really important, so that
you start with a blank palette,” says Patricia
Gaylor, an interior designer in Little Falls, N.J.
According to Julie Edelman, author of “The
Ultimate Accidental Housewife: Your Guide to
a Clean Enough House” (Hyperion, 2008), fo-
cus on cleaning high traffic and visibility areas,
as well as the kitchen and one designated bath-
room for guests. “If your house is organized
enough, it looks cleaner, so shift and straighten
as much as possible,” she says.

Use Common Scents

“At the holidays you need to take a breath,
sit back and enjoy,” Edelman says, and what’s
better than breathing in delicious holiday
scents? She creates a “scent decoy” by bak-
ing frozen cookie dough before guests arrive.
“People think you’ve been baking for hours,”
she says. Fresh pine is a great seasonal scent,
says Gaylor, who suggests arranging boughs in
a stone pitcher.

Organize Ornaments
For Gaylor, the tree is a very sentimental
addition to the holidays. “I can still remember
