Gteborg City Theatre between 1953 and 1959, where his performances included a highly acclaimed interpretation of Hamlet. At the height of his success with Hamlet he left the theatre and made his way on foot to Paris. In the 1960s Oscarsson was stricken by stage fright and wrote a book about the theatre, terror and fear. On Boxing Day 1966 he hit the headlines when he took off his clothes on the TV programme Hylands hrna (Hylands Corner). Oscarssons stage fright caused him to stop working on the stage during the 1970s. He turned his attention instead to breeding chickens. He made a comeback on stage in 1989 in Death of a Salesman at Angereds teater in Gteborg. Oscarsson has remained active as a film actor througout, both in Sweden and abroad. One of his earlier roles was in Svlt (Hunger) in 1966. But we have also seen him in films such as Ronja Rvardotter (Ronia: The Robber's Daughter), Gta Kanal eller vem drog ur proppen? (Who Pulled the Plug?), 1939, nglagrd (Angel Farm) and Juloratoriet (Christmas Oratorio). He has also made a few films of his own, including Ebon Lundin and Sverige t svenskarna (Battle of Sweden). One of Per Oscarssons most popular characters is police chief Gustav Jrgenson in the crime thriller Polisen i Strmstad (The Strmstad Police), five series of which were broadcast on SVT in Sweden. He has taken part in several of SVTs Christmas specials, including Hll huvet kallt (Keep a Cool Head) in 1994 and Kaspar i Nuddalen (Kaspar in Nuddalen) in 2001. He is also well known from the short film Kan du vissla, Johanna? (Can You Whistle, Johanna?), which has for many years been broadcast on SVT on Christmas Eve. He has also been involved in TV series such as Kejsarn av Portugallien (The Emperor of Portugallia), Herr von Hancken and Anderssons lskarinna (Anderssons Lover).
