In History of the Jewish People H H Ben Sasson reports on the Messianic movement for Shabbetai Zevi:
The keenest and fiercest of his opponents admits that he and those like him
all stood in awe and fear, and each one went his way -- the believers because of the awe of their kingdom and the honour of the king whom they accepted. As for us, we feared and dreaded the claim to dominion without power, and for the sake of peace, lest there should be some scandal in the synagogue. . . . And I also saw that I was [isolated], only a grain of sand in the country. And all the Torah scholars and their students took their stand against me. . . . So I had to rise and stand when they rose. And when they responsed Amen to each benediction and praise, I would respond Amen after them to each curse I uttered. . . . So each one said Amen according to his intention and opinion.
Truer words have never been spoken or broken on Kol Nidre or outside it.
. . . Then onward in my journey I come to understand That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night In the violence of a summers dream, in the chill of a wintry light In the bitter dance of loneliness fading into space In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea Sometimes I turn, theres someone there, other times its only me I am hanging in the balance of the reality of man Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand Copyright 1981 by Special Rider Music
Whether you want to believe Rabbi Manis Friedman is into William Blake is irrelevant, but whether youre aware of the panentheistic God-in-a-daisy complex, thats whats all important. Amen Paul Kirkman, Messianic Dylanologist 2012
