State implementing Kohler Co. opens new corporate new accountability communications system for public global facility New building features schools sustainable and modern
Kohler to hold information sessions
This year the State of Wisconsin is implementing a new accountability system for public schools. The new accountability system: Increases the focus on student achievement and sets high expectations for all students Emphasizes the need to ensure students are career and college ready Provides descriptive information about school performance using a report card process What does this mean for the Kohler School District? Increased benchmarks Wisconsin raised the benchmark scores needed for students to reach the proficient or advanced performance level in the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam (WKCE), which is currently the state standardized test. Beginning with school report cards released in October, student performance in reading and math will be reported using the newly increased benchmarks. These new benchmarks are based on those used by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), an assessment that measures how students across the country are performing. This change will enable the Kohler School District to compare its students not only to other students in Wisconsin, but to other students around the country. An expected result of the benchmark score changes on the WKCE will be a decline in the number of Kohler students considered to be proficient or advanced. This does not reflect a change in the abilities of students. It reflects the higher standards and aspirations expected of students. New School Report Cards Every public school will receive a report card with an accountability index score from 0-100. The index score is based on four priority areas: Student achievement in reading and mathematics on state assessments Student growth, measured by year-to-year improvements in achievement Closing gaps in performance between student groups (comparing English language learners, low-income students, students with disability, and members of

design to enhance creative, collaborate work

a racial or ethnic group with their peers) On-track to graduation/post-secondary readiness, using reliable indicators of high school graduation and post-secondary success The school report card is one of the measures Kohler Schools will use (in combination with other school data) as part of their analysis to determine in what areas students do well and where they need bolstering consistent with the mission of Kohler Schools to Inspire, Engage, and Achieve. The Department of Instruction is scheduled to release the Public Preliminary School Report Cards on October 22. Pending the actual release of the report cards, information sessions will be held in the Kohler Public Library on Monday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, November 6 at 8:00 a.m. The report cards will also be made available on the district website at kohlerpublicschools.org. Questions may be directed to the school principal or the Superintendents Office at (920)-4592920.

KOHLER, Wis., Sept., 2012With water-droplet light beams by night and a weathered-top symbol of heritage by day, the new Kohler Corporate Communications building stands as a welcoming beacon to the companys headquarters in the Village of Kohler, Wis., and home to the Kohler associates who live and breathe the companys family of brands. The one-story, 79,000 squarefoot building brings together Kohler corporate communications associates under one roof for the first time in 30 years. The 180 corporate communications associates had resided in four different locations within Kohler and neighboring town, Sheboygan Falls, and moved into this new location in June, 2012.

Designed for Creativity and Collaboration In todays business world, collaboration is more critical than ever, said Michael Mueller, Vice President-Communications and Internet Services. We feel this building and how it was designed, will break down any barriers to that higher level of collaboration. The building accommodates a new cubicle-free way of working. The benching configuration encourages collaboration and mobility, with a variety of spaces to accommodate the different kinds of work performed in the companys Corporate Communications department. By bringing together the various communication functions (such as communication strategists, graphic Continued on page 2

designers, digital specialists, website writers and designers, public relations specialists, photographers, media planners, etc.), the workspace and the wooded views are aimed to inspire flexibility and creative thinking. Its a modern approach to the office and an ideal environment for the Kohler associates who are stewards of the companys global brands, said Mueller. Green Design The new Kohler Corporate Communications building was designed to be certified in the U.S. Green Building Councils Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) ratings systems. Kohler has submitted its application for Gold-level LEED certification from the USGBC. The building showcases several sustainable features and processes. For example, when choosing the site, the project team considered groundwater flows and natural wetlands, and how to orient the building so it could take advantage of natural lighting; chose low- or no-VOC-emitting paint flooring systems and other interior features; specified energy-efficient heating/cooling and lighting systems; installed the companys own water-efficient plumbing products; used natural landscaping; and sourced building materials harvested and manufactured within a 500-mile radius. In the last couple of years, Kohlers Construction, Engineering and Management associates have made huge strides in learning about and implementing sustainable building practices, said Mike Andrews, Sr. Staff Project Manager, whose design team worked closely with Gensler, a Chicagobased architectural firm specializing in sustainable building design. This is evident in whats being done here and in our other facilities across the globe. The Kohler Communications Building will be the companys first LEED-certified new building on its headquarters campus. In 2011, Kohler constructed its first

By guest writer Kate Klink Audubon Road is home to one of the greatest and older trees in Kohler. Unfortunately, last year part of the tree started dying, and this year both sides of the tree died. The homeowners, Josh and Theresa Andrews, decided to commemorate the beautiful tree by taking a final picture with the neighborhood kids in and around

the tree. They had a commemorative celebration including the picture for the kids, and lunch, popsicles and cupcakes for the neighbors. The tree was cut down, but their gesture and respect for such a beautiful landmark will continue on in the hearts of their friends and neighbors.

Misfeldt and Suralik named semifinalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship program
Submitted by Kohler Schools James Misfeldt, son of Nancy and Scott Misfeldt, and Greg Suralik, son of Margaret and John Suralik, have been named 2013 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. In September, officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. NMSC is a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance and was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 440 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSCs goals of honoring the nations scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence. About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as

an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, include the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the states percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and their high school must submit a detailed scholarship application in which they provide information about the Semifinalists academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, and honors and awards received.

A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the students earlier performance on the qualifying test. National Merit Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. Congratulations James and Greg on this outstanding achievement and best of luck in the competition ahead.

Kohler crowd turns out for Friday Night Lights soccer

By guest writer Mark Sbrocco On Friday, September 28, the Kohler varsity soccer team defeated the Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran Eagles 2-1 in an exciting first ever Kohler night soccer game. Connor Hogan scored two goals for the Blue Bombers one in overtime to get the win in front of an enthusiastic crowd of more than 600 people. Ben Madigan assisted on the first goal. After the game, players, students, and fans young and old celebrated on the field long into the evening. But there is more to the story than a normal Central Lakeshore Conference high school soccer game. The Blue Bombers have dominated the conference over the past few years with four conference championships in the past five years and a state final appearance in 2009. This season they lost twelve seniors, with only four incoming freshmen. They also lost two starters to the prestigious FC Milwaukee Academy program which plays year round preventing players from playing high school soccer. Add some injuries and the Blue Bombers were left with only 13 players able to take the field. As a result they are 7-15-1 on the year, a big change from the 25-3 record they experienced in 2011. However, on a beautiful fall evening, the community rallied around their team with a special event designed to highlight the enthusiasm the sport has in this village of 2,000 people. The Kohler High School Athletic Director moved their 4:30 p.m. Thursday game to Friday night at 7 p.m. The Kohler Soccer Club rented lights and received two extra sets of lights from Kohler Co. They also invited all of the Kohler Soccer Club teams to the game, letting them in free if they wore a soccer jersey. Young kindergarten players scrimmaged under the lights before the game and older kids played at halftime. More than 150 Kohler Soccer Club players and coaches showed their support by joining the team on the field while Chloi DuCharme sang the national anthem. There were prizes and giveaways, the Kohler HS drum line, music, and the energy of the students and fans who filled Ebben field. I want to thank the Kohler Soccer Club for this great event. It meant a lot to the team. It was great to see the enthusiasm and excitement from the entire community. I also want to thank our AD for help making this happen, said Kohler coach Scott Feltner. Based on the number of young soccer players at the game and the strong community involvement, it won't be long before the Blue Bombers are back in the mix as a competitive program. Thanks to all the parents, students and volunteers that support Kohler soccer and helped make Friday Night Lights a smashing success. We look forward to doing it again next year.

The sling is a prop like a strap or block intended to assist alignment deepen awareness and provide immediate benefits of spinal decompression. With the weight of the body partially or fully supported along with the help of gravity and the fabric we can explore and create space in our bodies as intended in traditional yoga practice. Through aerial yoga the body unwinds the mind quiets and core strength is built; participants leave the class feeling whole. Many newcomers enjoy working with the sling because with the help of gravity there is very little pressure or stress on the joints especially the spine. Inversions are accessed easily with no strain on the neck back or shoulders. Gravity eases us into optimal alignment with very little effort and deep poses can be accessed through relaxation and deep breathing. Our relaxation response is heightened by the unique sensations accessed in aerial yoga. Hanging in the sling makes our core muscles fire. It is so much fun you dont even realize what a great workout youre getting. Transitioning in and out of the aerial yoga poses builds upper body strength and resting in the poses heightens relaxation for a balanced effort overall.
