Chapter 3: The Age of Exploration

GLEs Students will summarize the viability and diversity of Native American cultures before Europeans came. Students will outline the discovery, exploration, and early settlement of America. Students will identify human characteristics, such as peoples education, language, diversity, economies, religions, settlement patterns, ethnic background, and political system. Students will identify how a person becomes a member of a group or institution and what factors influence inclusion or exclusion from a group.

Chapter Plan
Day 1: When Cultures Meet Hook: United Streaming video Native Americans: Contact & Conflict (27 min) After the video, students will create Flip Flap Timelines to familiarize themselves with explorers of the New World. Day 2: Introducing Trading Cards Show students traditional baseball cards. Explain to the class that THEY will be creating a brand new line of trading cards for the Explorers of the New World. Students will research one explorer and create a trading card to display. The trading card will have information on one side and a full color picture (photo or illustration) on the other side. o Christopher Columbus o Prince Henry o Francisco Coronado o Vasco da Gama o Samuel de Champlain o Hernando Cortes o Robert La Salle o Jaques Marquette & Louis o John Cabot Joliet o Sir Humphrey Gilbert o Martin Frobisher o Juan Ponce de Leon First, students will use the Question Guide to gather information about the Explorer. Next, students will create a rough draft of their trading card. Day 3: Creating Trading Cards Students will create trading cards using construction paper and color. Day 4: Creating Trading Cards Students will create trading cards using construction paper and color. Time? United Streaming Columbus: Voyager to a New World (22 min)
