KICK-ASS

(Research)

How it was produced Production Cost Budget $28 million Special Effects $8-9 million spent - Double negative did just over 835 visual effects for the movie (mostly using CGI, Green screen + others) Script & Development Mark Miller and Jane Goldman (known for the lm Stardust) were paid to edit and develop the script. ($3 million) The Shoot Director (Mathew Vaughn) invested his own money into this lm. He took the largest revenue. Brad Pitt was also involved in the production and added nance. (Above the line costs $7.7 million / Below the line costs - $7.8 million) The lm went $10million over budget Total gross - $96,188,903 million What it was based on Kick Ass is based on the comics of Marvel Comic's chief writer mark Millar Kick Ass (comic book) Promotion A number of posters where released, showing the main character, the actors playing htose characters and the lm itself. Another poster scheme was used where all superheroes. These showed bright colours and stand out images. Along with this each poster included a URL which appeared to allow the user to follow to each persons own site. This was not the case, it took the user to the Kick-ass main site instead. A rst trailer was released which introduced the idea of being a superhero without powers The extended trailer was then released soon before the actual release date, this trailer showed a lot more scenes from the lm and was aimed to entice the previously found audience Another way of gaining media time was the idea of releasing certain things for each character online. These contained clips and plot lines. Prints & Advertising costs where near to $10.5 million

Problems in making the lm The script was a particular problem. Millar, used to autonomy, was shocked at the accommodations he had to make. "I don't really do happy endings, so there's a huge difference between Kick-Ass the movie and Kick-Ass the comic" Not being able to afford even a 'C grade' Marvel character the lm took the unusual step of writing the comic book at the same time the lm was produced. When it came to nancing the lm, Vaughan raised the $30m himself but had Sony distribute the lm (although he ignored their requests to tone down the language). lming gunre and ght sequences in Manhattan can be a bit problematic they had to build a set at Elstree Studios with an enormous green screen. They got high-resolution plates of Manhattan and imported them into Media Composer.

The directors views on the British lm Industry a recent British success in terms of the lm Industry - James Vaughn i think the UK lm industry is the most, er, paradoxical industry we have we are literally world class leaders in making movies, but we dont have a lm industry
if wed self nanced the bonds we did bond and potter, the two biggest franchises of all time, yet we cant get lms of the ground in england we have the best writers, we have the best directors, crew, actors

we have no money
i think Kick Ass! will help because it will show all the money coming back to England

movie stars and A-list directors can be quite greedy\ we could have, i think, the biggest lm industry in the world within 3 years
the tax thing is sort of helpful, but a good industry should be able to work without subsides

theres no reason, the only thing we havent got is the money.

The goverment should have put a couple of million in to the lm industry instead of some bank which was run badly im trying

The technology used built a set at Elstree Studios with an enormous green screen Media Composers got amazing motion tracking tools, so you can track the background using the on-set tracking markers (a feature called SpectraMatte that allows you to adjust keys with such detail) Phaze UKs facility includes four ber-networked Pro Tools|HD workstations, as well as a mix stage outtted with an ICON D-Command console. Matthew Vaughns audio recordist, would use a mixture of multiple radio and boom mics, and wed often end up with eight or ten channels of audio to work with Sheehan handled Foley and dialog, using a cocktail of noise-reduction plug-ins from Waves, iZotope, and Avid Having the D-Command during the nal mix, with all the effects running live within Pro Tools, gave us the exibility to make instantaneous changes right on the mix stage.

Controversy surrounding the lm the ultimate obstacle there is creating a movie aimed at the younger set and then barring them from seeing it. R rating doesnt do well when your target audience is 14-year old boys. Those boys have a tough time getting into the theater without buying a ticket to How to Train Your Dragon. All of the controversy talk about violence and children saying naughty words seemed to come directly from the lmmakers.

The soundtrack Kick-Ass needs some kick-ass music of its own Instead, Matthew Vaughn's rather good new superhero movie is lumbered with soundtrack snippets from 28 Days Later and Sunshine sounds like his music from Sunshine. Kick-Ass reuses his scores, his highly recognisable scores that have previously been heard not only in the movies for which they were written, but also achieved omnipresence on trailers, adverts and TV. the music used is so recent and so generally overexposed

How they saved money The movie didnt feature any big name talent (except for Nicolas Cage who was desperate for some money)
