DISTANCE LEARNING AND TECHNOLOGY DAY 2012

On August 20th, 2012, the Center for Distance Learning hosted its 2nd annual Distance Learning and Technology Day conference. The conference began with an address from Dr. Marilyn Dickey. Dr. Dickey highlighted the accomplishments of CDL from the 2011-2012 year and the CDL goals moving forward. A panel discussion focused on the importance of providing student support services for online learners. Faculty member, Sue Bickford, demonstrated how to use the Adaptive Release feature within Blackboard to control student access. CDL sta members, Matt Albrizio and Oktay Donmez, focused on Flipping Your Classroom and using animations in your online course. TCC Librarian, Matt Remer, gave the audience a comprehensive tour of the new discovery catalog system Primo, which seeks to deliver the best possible results to users. Finally, faculty members got a sneak peek of the new Virtual Learning Commons. The Virtual Learning Commons will oer learners and faculty a broad range of services that include learning materials, resources, and technology and multi-media support. CDL felt this was a huge success because of the participation and suggestions recorded during the event. We aligned our strategic plan for the upcoming year with the faculty suggestions. Once again, thank you to all who attended!

Provost and Vice President of Academic Aairs, Dr. Barbara Sloan, discusses TCCs commitment to exce!ence in distance learning courses.

Sue Bickford of Technology and Professional Programs shares her experience as an online instructor.

BLACKBOARD DESIGN TIP STUDENT VIEW TOOL FOR INSTRUCTORS

Instructors have often asked for a way to view and navigate a course as a student. This Fall, a new Blackboard building block was released that allows instructors to completely navigate their course as a demo student. Faculty simply use the Student View link located in the Course Tools section to completely navigate a course as a student. This tool provides instructors with the ability to: See the course content exactly how your students will see it. View the availability of all course content. Test assignments and assignment submission. Take a test to verify functionality. Help students navigate your course. Verify or troubleshoot issues students may have in your course. View the My Grades page.

How to use the Student View Tool: 1. Login to Blackboard, and access one of your courses. 2. In the Control Panel under Course Tools, select Student View. 3. Navigate your course as a student. 4. To return to instructor view, click on the Teacher View link located in the navigation menu. View a screencast on accessing Student View

Your Attention Needed

The Center for Distance Learning oers three levels of faculty training certications. The rst level, Orientation, is required for any instructor teaching online courses for the rst time. The Basic and Advanced certications are optional and are intended to allow faculty to acquire and demonstrate additional breadth and depth in subjects critical to successful online teaching and learning. The CDL Certication program supports faculty in their ongoing commitment to enhance their knowledge, skills, and abilities that lead to student learning and success. The formation of the certication program is the result of more than a years careful development during which CDL considered best practices in distance learning, feedback from faculty, recommendations from Blackboard, and suggestions from deans and directors. We welcome you to join the CDL Certication program. It provides an opportunity to enhance your online teaching practice and student learning, while also becoming a part of a collaborative, innovative online teaching community. Orientation: FAC001: Distance Learning Faculty Orientation FAC024: Getting Started with Teaching Online Basic Certication: FAC025: Assessing Learners Online FAC026: Building Online Courses FAC029: Enhancing Communication Online.
