    SOTHEBY’S LONDON is pleased to unveil the line-up for “Unfolding Landscape”, a special selling exhibition of works by China’s new generation of design talent, which will run from 2nd to 8th November 2012. The first Western exhibition of graduate work from the Design School, CAFA - the prestigious China Central Academy of Fine Arts - is curated by tastemaker and design authority Janice Blackburn and will feature furniture, ceramics, jewellery, fashion and photography. Highlights of “Unfolding Landscape” include Gao Rongguo’s striking double photographic portraits of twins Hujo Yijin’s colourful heat-reactive tea trays; Qin Xue and Hu Keren’s elegant acrylic furniture containing original Qing Dynasty wood carvings and Li Bowen and Liu Xiaoxuan’s ingenious dual-purpose rattan seating systems. Professor Min Wang, Dean of the CAFA Design School commented: “At CAFA we believe creativity is the soul of design and the fundamental purpose of design is to serve the people. We take as our mission to train large numbers of designers with creativity and an innovative spirit to help China to transform from ‘Made in China’ to ‘Designed in China’ and ‘Created in China’. Janice Blackburn said: “This is an exciting moment to introduce Chinese design to a wider audience and I am delighted to bring “Unfolding Landscape” to Sotheby’s. Making my selections from the extensive range of work produced by CAFA’s design school graduates was no small challenge, but I believe these young designers and photographers, on show together in the West for the first time, are producing highly innovative and exciting work, which bodes well for China’s ambitions for its design industry. I am certain collectors and design enthusiasts will find “Unfolding Landscape” an immensely rewarding experience.”

The first Western exhibition of graduate work from the Design School, CAFA - the prestigious China Central Academy of Fine Arts - is curated by tastemaker and design authority Janice Blackburn and will feature furniture, ceramics, jewellery, fashion and photography.     EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS

    Professor Jiang Li, CAFA School of Designs Professor Of Furniture said: In teaching furniture design, traditional materials and crafts, such as wood, rattan, ceramic and lacquerware are compulsory for the students who are also encouraged to deal with contemporary design concepts such as sustainable ways of object-making and to explore experimental design in an effort to make usable objects of modern aesthetics with traditional materials and crafts.

    While contemporary Chinese art is frequently exposed in the UK, contemporary Chinese design is unknown, or at least unfamiliar to most audience in the UK, just like the scenery hidden in a scroll of Chinese landscape painting. Thus the title of the exhibition Unfolding Landscape is both a metaphor and an invitation in the sense that it invites the audience to unfold and discover the emerging landscape of contemporary Chinese design, just beginning to make its presence in the international stage.
