To Forgive, But Never Forget

It is Time to Forgive Terrorists

Bali governor Made Mangku Pastika has used the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the 2002 Bali bombings to urge all parties affected to forgive those who perpetrated the terrorist acts. It is indeed not easy to forget such a big tragedy that has claimed so many lives, but now is the time for mutual forgiveness. Hopefully, we are all ready to openly forgive, said Pastika. The first step to forgiveness, according to Bali's governor who was also the key investigator in capturing the men responsible for the Bali bombings, is to put peace and toleration in the ascendency in order to permit a positive view of the future, Quoted by Seputarbali.com, Pastika

Papa, Can You Hear Me?

Poem of 12-year-old Balinese Boy Moves Many to T e a r s a t 1 0 t h Commemoration Ceremony of Bali Bombing
On Friday, October 12, 2012, over a thousand people gathered at a memorial service organized at the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Monument Park (GWK) to honor the 202 who died and the scores of others injured in the terrorist attack on Sari Club and Paddy's ten years earlier. Moving speeches were offered by Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, former Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa together with prayers from major faiths. But among the moving tributes delivered by survivors of the bombing tragedy, was that delivered by an 11.5 year-old boy that moved many in the audience to tears. Made Arya Dana was only 1.5 years old when his Father, Gede Badrawan, who worked at the Sari Club, died at the hands of terrorist. Ten years later, he took the speakers' podium at GWK before over a thousand people and a TV audience of millions to read a letter to his dead father. Accompanied by his Mother, Ni Luh Erniati, who translated his letter in to English, the boy delivered a most moving eulogy to his departed Father. B e l o w i s B a l i d i s c o v e r y. c o m ' s f r e e translation of Made Arya Dana's letter.
a toy for me. How much Daddy loved me. How I missed your hugs. Days turned into months. Months turned into years. My waiting never ended. I am almost twelve now, I am beginning to understand what happened. I can feel the pain in my Mother's heart. I also now understand that Daddy will not come home. That tragedy has separated us forever. Today I stand here, on the same day and same month when Daddy left us. I read this letter for you, Daddy. A Letter for Daddy I was one-and-a-half then, I didn't understand the meaning of tragedy. I didn't understand the meaning of my Mother's tears. I had only one hope. That Daddy would come home with a good toy for me. I looked at the picture of your face. I listened to Mother's stories about you. Daddy was at work and would bring For all your love and suffering I promise that my waiting will end here. I will seek the future you lost, I will make your dreams come true, and I will look after Mama for you. May God hear all my prayers.

KUTA
Kuta is nestled between Jl. Bakungsari to the south and Jl. Melasti to the north. Kuta is the best known of all the villages in Bali, often maligned, Jl. Sunset Road 10X, Kerobokan, Bali but loved by many. Kuta gets its so called bad reputation from the early Ph.+62 361 8475955/Fax.+62 361 8475682 days of travel to Bali where everybody, particularly the young crowd, www.xpbali.com/info@xpbali.com hung out and got wrecked. Footpaths didn't exist, open drains ran down the side of unmade roads. Shopping was sarongs and T-shirts and hawkers who sold just about anything. Times have changed and Kuta has grown up, gone are the unmade roads and open drains. Footpaths, although narrow, run both sides of the main streets. The hawkers are still there - part of the character of the place. Sarongs and T-shirts are still sold but now there are CD shops, boutiques, small trendy bars and restaurants and even Department Stores. Kuta boasts the world's first "themed" Hard Rock Hotel. Imagine going into a huge one level shopping centre that would take about 45 minutes to walk from one end to the other with small RV-1230 walkways branching off in every direction, now add cars, motorbikes and the odd temple ceremony. JIMBARAN
Jimbaran is just south of the airport and Kuta. This was formerly a real backwater of south Bali, just a tiny fishing village with a daily market. That all started to change in the 1980s and Jimbaran is now home to several world class 5 star beach resorts, plus a few more moderate mid-market hotels. There is however little in the way of budget accommodation and there are also many high-end villas in this area, particularly on the ridges of high ground above Jimbaran Bay. This has resulted in monikers such as the "Beverly Hills of Bali" or "Millionaire's Row". The bay itself has a pleasant white sand beach and is very safe for swimming. The three clusters of grilled seafood restaurants on the beach are a major tourist draw in the evenings, as is the truly stunning sunset. Jimbaran is also home to a Norwegian University, Gateway College, with around 500 students studying athletics, philosphy, culture, economics and journalism. The school is located in Kedonganan close to Sari Segara Resort and in Jl, Bantas Kau where it also has a small cafe. Jimbaran has an increasing number of rather chic shops but there is little or no nightlife here. It has the advantage of being a little closer to Kuta and Seminyak and the cultural highlights of Central Bali.

BALI THE RIGHT WAY

Gday again folks and welcome to the latest on the street in down town Kuta. We all hoped last week's memorial service was as uneventful as it should have been, and the only issue was getting around the place was just that little bit harder with specific streets being blocked off. I'm sure you all heard the jungle drums beating a message that there was an incredibly high alert on the island as the threat of some sort of attack was high, and thankfully, as I said, the day went off rather uneventfully. I found it quite emotional to go to the memorial on Legian street and see aliasj@kutaweekly.com the many, many thousands of people, from all over the world paying their respect to the people that where lost ten years ago. It seems the Prime Minister of Australia, along with John Howard and Tony Abbott amongst a heap of other dignitaries, attended the many memorials that where held around the island. I did see a heap of television coverage of the anniversary from Australia and think in years to come there just may be a public holiday each year for the day. In so far as time goes I will say that would have to be one of the fastest decades I can remember Let's hope we never see anything like that happen, ever again to the Balinese or the many travellers that love the island so much. Peace and best wishes to everyone. Ok moving along, this week has seen a few big things happen in and around Kuta with the highlight of my week being the Balinese ceremony to bless the Kuta Town House stage three apartments prior to the grand opening later in the year. What a massive event the Balinese put on to ensure the blessing was a success. It is my understanding that the blessing is to ensure the forward successful life of the buildings and the business and to further ensure that everyone who visits or stays in the hotel is kept safe and well. We have published a few pages of pictures to help celebrate the blessing of the project and thank the Town House for their ongoing support to the newspaper. Seeing I've drifted onto the support offered by the sponsors in the newspaper, I'll take the time to introduce the newest one which is Sambo's Bar and Restaurant in Jimbaran on the road to Ullawattu opposite the entry to Puri Gadang. These guys have it going on I can tell you, and if you like a good deal on a few cold green ones then look no further than Sambo's. The boss either Mr Sambo or Ibu Maria, (I haven't worked out which one is the boss yet but I'm sure we all know who is) have asked the paper to make a special voucher to their advert which offers all patrons a buy 2 beers and get the third one for free. Now you don't have to be a mathematician to work it out, unless you're an Eagles supporter in which case you may need a calculator, the deal is a ripper. Needless to say fester and I headed straight up there and grabbed as many of the newspapers as we could find that had been delivered there to tear out the ticket and present it to the bar staff for the deal. Needless to say this didn't go over too well with the staff as nobody else got a chance to redeem any. So if you see a copy of the rag tear out the coupon and take it up there. They have a very extensive sports bar setup and run almost every event live, all day every day. They have a great food menu covering most tastes, of which I will recommend the big sambos breakfast, as that's where I watched the fords come second on Bathurst weekend just gone. The place is fully air-conditioned and a great place to kick back and relax, play pool, darts or just enjoy the super cold greenys while watching live sports. Cheers for the support John and Maria. Check out the advert on page 20. Ok folks I think that's enough work for the week for me, so I'll leave you to read our pages with great interest and trust that you will all patronize our sponsors as best possible in your travels. I hope that the most of you stay safe, happy, healthy and always remember, time flows like water in a river, we cannot touch the same water twice. Enjoy your week, ALIASJ R.I.P Mr Herry Mc Dee, from all the staff and management of the Kuta Townhouses and the Kuta Weekly.

Or foreigner permanently domiciled in Indonesia, or a foreign legal entity with a representative office in Indonesia such as foreign Banks, embassies, etc.

NOMINEE SYSTEM FOR HAK MILIK

This structure is a regularly practiced procedure in Indonesia, whereby the foreigner nominates and Indonesian representative to acquire the land and to hold the 'freehold' title (Hak Milik) on behalf of the foreigner. Ownership of the land is transferred from the previous owner to the Indonesian nominee. The foreigner and the Indonesian nominee then sign an agreement which recognizes the Indonesian nominee as the legal owner of the property whilst declaring the foreigner as the rightful owner of the property. This agreement denotes that the Indonesian nominee will carry out any directives from the foreigner regarding the land. This agreement must always be concluded in the presence of a public notary.

Taurus April 21 to May 21

You love your cozy creature comforts but you're about to be shaken out of your complacent comfort zone, as the New Moon and Jupiter provide a shot of adrenalin to tired old Taurus routines. Plus health issues are highlighted. So it's time for hedonistic Bulls to leap off the couch and lift weights [rather than cream buns] as you get your body moving again.

Scorpio October 24 to November 22

Monday's New Moon stimulates your soul sector, so turn your attention inward via some quiet contemplation. Expect flashes of ESP, an insightful dream or a fateful meeting with someone special. On Sunday you're inclined to extreme views, black and white thinking and intense communication. But it is the perfect time to research a subject in a deep and vast way.

Bali Appoints Special Authority to Deal with Retirees

Bali Daily (The Jakarta Post) reports that Bali has plans to develop seven tourism villages catering to retired foreign visitors. The Bali Hotels Association (BHA) and Bank Indonesia (BI), working together with the provincial tourism authority, are extending technical planning expertise and financial assistance for the projects. The executive director of the BHA, Djnaldi Gosana, said, We're supporting the tourism villages so they can prepare and have the required skills to welcome and serve this kind of tourists. Slated for eventual development as senior citizen destination in Bali are Tabanan,

Gemini May 22 to June 21

Boredom is a big no-no for restless Twins this week, as the New Moon energizes your entertainment zone. So you need to keep your mercurial mind busy, stimulated and amused. The focus is also on friendships but they won't all run smoothly. Expect surprises, hiccups and hijinks along the way. Focus on the facts on Sunday and don't skip over minor details.

Sagittarius November 23 to December 21

With positive New Moon/Jupiter aspects [plus impulsive Mars in your sign] you've definitely got the urge to splurge and overindulge in all departments. So your motto for the week is from birthday great Oscar Wilde I can resist everything except temptation. You're also keen to help others but make sure you don't promise more than you are prepared to deliver.

Cancer June 22 to July 23

Too much work and too little play can make Crabs cranky and difficult to live with. Monday's New Moon encourages you to re-adjust your home/work balance, so that it is balanced. You could also make a fresh start via a spring clean, renovation, change of residence or new house-mate. If you let your intuition point you in the right direction, then the world is your oyster.

Capricorn December 22 to January 20

It's time to reassess your career aspirations. Are you pursuing your professional dreams and heading in the right direction? If not, then some adventurous adjustments may be necessary, as Jupiter jolts you into action. Learn to delegate, otherwise you'll end up being a grumpy Goat. And, if you are too consumed with work concerns, friends and family will feel neglected.

Leo July 24 to August 23

The New Moon links up with Jupiter this week, which boosts your adventurous side [and your bossy, boisterous streak]. Twoway communication is a top priority. Don't always jump in and hog the conversation it's time to do less talking and a lot more listening. Plus expand your mental horizons via reading, writing, stimulating conversations, study and travel.

Aquarius January 21 to February 19

Dream big dreams Aquarius, as Monday's New Moon activates your aspirations zone. But make sure your creative plans aren't just surface gloss and glamour. Plenty of elbow grease [and the cooperation of others] is required if you want to turn your dreams into reality. You crave excitement and are impatient for change, but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Spare the Tree, Save the Island

Protestors Demand Governor Revoke Private Development Contract for Ngurah Rai Mangrove Forest
The Bali Working Committee for the Environment (Kekal-Bali) comprised of Bali's Friends of the Earth (WALHI), Frontier Bali, Bali Out Bound, LPM Kertha Aksara from the Law Faculty of Udayana University and members of Bali's civil society concerned with conservation demonstrated in Bali. The protestors called on Bali's governor Made Mangku Pastika urging him to urgently withdraw the permit issued to PT Tirta Rahmat Bahari (TRB) to operate in the 102.22 hectare mangrove forest surrounding Bali's airport and adjoining the southern regions of the island. According to Bali Post, the environmental activists held banners proclaiming, Withdrawn the Permits of PT TRB, Save the Mangrove Forest at Suwung and Reject the Exploitation of the Mangrove Forest. The demonstrators made speeches questioning the governor's promises to make Bali clean and green. There speeches portrayed the granting of a license to a private company as a capitulation to a private investor and a commercialization of an environmentally sensitive area. The deputy of WALHI-Bali, Suryadi Darmoko, described the mangrove forest as the last citadel on the shores of Bali protecting the Balinese people. Arguing that the commercialization of the mangrove will degrade and destroy the mangrove, Suryadi said the governors commitment to the environment is little more than a slogan. Suryadi said: The jargon of 'clean and green' which is a mainstay of the governor's plans to solve Bali's environmental problems is a reverse branding given the actual situation with the island's environment. The fact (the lease on the mangrove forest) indicates that the sweet jargon of 'clean and green' declared since 2010 has failed to create a Bali that is genuinely clean and green. The protestors issued 5 demands to governor: 1. To urgently withdraw the permit for a natural tourism business on the 102.22 hectares of land given to PT Tirta Rahmat Bahari over the Mangrove Forest at Ngurah Rai. 2. For the governor to genuinely guard the conservancy of Bali's mangrove forest while increasing forested areas to the legally mandated minimum of 30% of the island's entire land area. 3. To refuse all efforts to destroy Bali's environment, especially the Ngurah Rai Mangrove Forest. 4. That the governor reaffirms its commitment to a clean and green Bali. 5. To implement the long discussed moratorium on new tourism accommodation by creating a comprehensive master plan for Bali's development. The demonstration held at the governor's office was the object of intense police control, but disbanded without incidence. www.balidiscovery.com

In 2006 four urinals shaped like women's lips designed by Austrian artist Rudolf Scheffel were taken away from public toilets near the National Opera in Vienna after protests from women's groups. They were later sold on eBay. Meredith Burgmann, founder of the annual Ernie Awards for sexist comments, described the urinals as "schoolboy grubbiness". But she said she wasn't surprised, given the recent "outpouring of misogynist incidents".

A top neurosurgeon claims to have proof of heaven after making a full recovery from a seven day coma that saw his neocortex inactivated.
Dr Eben Alexander, who teaches neuroscience at Harvard University among others, fell seriously ill after contracting a rare form of bacterial meningitis in 2008. Within hours of developing a severe headache, Dr Alexander's entire cortex, the section of the brain that controls thought and emotion, had shut down. Though his chances of survival were low, he awoke from the coma seven days later and began describing an "other worldly experience". "I was in a place of clouds. Big, puffy, pink white ones that showed up sharply against the deep blue black sky," he wrote in an article. He also goes on to describe "flocks of transparent, shimmering beings arced across the sky, leaving long, streamer like lines behind them". While Dr Alexander admits his scientific expertise has made him sceptical of afterlife experiences, he claims the loss of function to his cortex makes his experiences unique. "I'm not the first person to have discovered evidence that consciousness exists beyond the body," he said. "I know full well how extraordinary, how frankly unbelievable, all this sounds." "But as far as I know, no one before me has ever travelled to this dimension while their cortex was completely shut down, and while their body was under minute medical observation, as mine was for the full seven days of my coma." Dr Alexander admits many still struggle to accept his

'Authentic' Prince doll advert banned

An advert for a doll that promised an ' a u t h e n t i c likeness' to the D u k e o f Cambridge on his wedding day has been banned for being misleading.
The porcelain collectable was d e s c r i b e d a s 'handcrafted to an unprecedented level' in the brochure of its manufacturer, Bradford Exchange. 'The world's finest artisans have created an authentic likeness of the handsome Prince on his wedding day,' the text accompanying a picture of the doll, which costs 149.95, said. 'Crafted of fine bisque porcelain and meticulously hand painted for exquisite realism, this lifelike portrait is 17 inches tall, and full pose able.' But the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) which asked for its own sample of the doll upheld a customer complaint that the text was misleading. 'We considered that the face of the doll differed from that advertised in being slimmer and painted in a more vibrant, and less realistic, way,' the ASA ruling said. 'The hairline also appeared to be more bluntly defined, and the doll's hair was in some parts much longer than the close cropped style shown in the ad. 'Because we considered that there were significant differences between the doll and the image in the ad, and because we understood that the two were intended to match, we concluded that the ad was not an accurate representation of the product.' The advert must not appear again in its current form, ASA ruled. Bradford Exchange, which trades as The Ashton Drake Galleries, said it sold a large number of the dolls and received no other complaints. It describes the limited edition piece as a 'perfect accompaniment' to its Princess Catherine Royal Elegance Bride Doll.

Authorities say a blaze that displaced dozens of people from a US apartment complex may have been sparked by a resident trying to cook a squirrel with a propane torch.

Kohsel says a fire-fighter broke a toe. No residents were injured. Resident Tiffany Camburn said that she and her neighbours had to evacuate their apartments. The American Red Cross arranged temporary shelter and clothing for displaced residents.

"We Didn't Start the Fire"

is a song by Billy Joel. Its lyrics are made of rapid-fire brief allusions to over a hundred headline events between March 1949 (Joel was born on May 9 of that year) and 1989, when the song was released on his album Storm Front. The song was a number-one hit in the US. History The idea for the song came about when Joel was talking with someone half his age. The guy was talking about how the world was in such a big mess and it would never be resolved. Joel replied to him "I thought the same things when I was your age". The person replied: "Yeah, but you grew up in the fifties and everybody knows that nothing happened in the fifties". Not impressed by this Joel retorted: "Wait a minute, didn't you hear of Korea, the Hungarian freedom fighters or the Suez Crisis?" He said it was those headlines which formed the basic framework for the song. Joel has said, "I'm a history nut. I devour books. At one time I wanted to be a history teacher". According to his mother, he was a bookworm by the age of seven. Unlike most of Joel's songs, the lyrics were written before the melody, owing to the somewhat unusual style of the song. The song was a huge commercial success and was Joel's third Billboard No. 1 hit. It was nominated for the Grammy Award for Record of the Year. I had turned forty. It was 1989 and I said "Okay, what's happened in my life?" I wrote down the year 1949. Okay, Harry Truman was president. Popular singer of the day, Doris Day. China went Communist. Another popular singer, Johnnie Ray. Big Broadway show, South Pacific. Journalist, Walter Winchell. Athlete, Joe DiMaggio. Then I went on to 1950. It's one of the worst melodies I've ever written. I kind of like the lyric though. Joel has said "there's an element of malevolence in the song," and how it's like waiting for the other shoe to drop. Joel has mixed feelings about the song. "It's a nightmare to perform live, because if I miss one word, it's a train wreck." He has also called it a "novelty song" that does not "really define me as well as album songs that probably don't get played". Blender magazine ranked "We Didn't Start the Fire" No. 41 on its list of the "50 Worst Songs Ever", a list that also includes songs from Paul McCartney and Simon & Garfunkel. They considered the production bombastic and stated that the song "resembles a term paper scribbled the night before it's due." Historical items referred to in the song Though the lyrics are rapid-fire with several people and events mentioned in a single word each, there is widespread agreement on the meaning of the lyric. Steven Ettinger wrote, Billy Joel captured the major images, events, and personalities of this half-century in a three-minute song.... It was pure information overload, a song that assumed we knew exactly what he was singing about...What was truly alarming was the realization that we, the listeners, for the most part understood the references. The following events are in the order that they appear in the song, which is, with two possible exceptions, chronological. The lyric for each individual event is brief and the events are punctuated by the chorus and other lyrical elements. The following list includes longer, more descriptive names for clarity. Events from a variety of contexts, such as popular entertainment, foreign affairs, and sports, are intermingled, giving an impression of the culture of the time as a whole. There are 119 items listed in the song.

Dear Martha, Married (won't say happily though) kids, work, family, sport, activities, all the usual traits that keep you busy and leave little to no time together for us-time and now find that the spark is well and truly gone. Sex is no longer fun (or even offered other than rarely) and we are just going through the motions. So call me unhappily married. There is another side to me that nobody knows about - picking up women online, random hook-ups, voyeurism, the riskier the situation and of getting caught the more exciting I find it. During work hours when I can sneak out of the office for a so-called meeting or a late night liaison on the way home from a few beers with mates at the pub, I get into these situations whenever I can. I have been doing it for years and when I think about it - I want to do it more. I know that eventually it will all come back to get me, and I will get caught out and will lead to the end of our marriage and this will shatter my world. I would love to stop and try to work on my marriage but the feeling I get when participating in these risky activities is so exciting and thrilling I am finding I am doing it more and it is becoming all-consuming. I know it is wrong but what do I do? Harry
Dear Harry, You are clearly not personally satisfied, not just with sex, but with the relationship. What risk taking does is give them back an element of control over people's lives. So while you feel powerless to change the course of your average life and your average marriage, you feel exhilarated and alive during your risky sexual encounters - but also, more importantly, in control. If you feel bound in your life and unable to contemplate leaving or changing it, then this is not only a rebellion, it is your way of saying I am important, and 'up yours' to the universe and fate. Risk-taking behavior is simply about getting the juices running. It's quite common among people with less emotional and less volatile personalities. For those people it can take a real jolt to get their feelings working strenuously. People involved in these activities usually also have less respect for authority than others and overall a more negative or pessimistic outlook on society. So it's a bit of an 'up yours' to authority too. I suspect deep down a part of you doesn't give a shit about hurting anyone and that will not be what eventually makes you want to change. What might make you change in the end is the dawning reality that the freedom you feel during those activities is an illusion. For you there is no measurable gain, just a lot of potential for damage. Worried about that illicit affair being discovered by your partner?
Fear not, there's an app for that which solves the problem with a shake of the phone. The Cate app, which stands for Call and Text Eraser, creates an invisible log of calls and text messages. Such is the secrecy it provides, not even the icon appears on the phone's screen. And if someone walks in while you're involved in that intimate tete-a-tete, a simple shake of the phone will make it disappear. The app has been designed by US man Boston Neal Desai. Mr Desai says it's important for people to be able to protect their privacy. "It's a privacy app, essentially, and as with every technology that involves privacy, there is good with the bad," Mr Desai said. So far, 70 percent of the purchases have been by women.

Man made weapon out of sawfish

The sharp snout of a large sawfish attached to a wooden handle was used as a weapon in a bizarre disturbance in a Karratha street last night.

Austrian extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner has become the first man to break the sound barrier in a 38.6-kilometre freefall from the edge of space.
The 43-year-old leapt from a capsule more than 39km above the earth, reaching a top speed of 1342km/h, or 1.24 times the speed of sound, according to organisers. No one has ever reached that speed wearing only a high tech suit. The altitude he leaped from also marked the highest ever for a skydiver more than three times the height of the average cruising altitude for a jetliner. Organisers said the descent lasted just over nine minutes, about half of it in freefall. He travelled 36,529m in freefall for four minutes and 20 seconds before opening his red and white parachute and floating down to the desert in New Mexico, said Red Bull Stratos mission record keeper Brian Utley. Mission control erupted in cheers as Baumgartner sprung from the capsule hoisted aloft by a giant helium filled balloon to an altitude of 39,044m, even higher than expected. "I think 20 tons have fallen from my shoulders. I prepared for this for seven years," he said in Austria in his first interview after the leap. He lifted his arms in victory shortly after landing, setting off loud cheers from jubilant onlookers and friends inside the mission's control centre in Roswell, New Mexico. "When I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble, you do not think about breaking records any more, you do not think about gaining scientific data," he said. "The only thing you want is to come back alive." Baumgartner says that travelling faster than sound is "hard to describe because you don't feel it". With no reference points, "you don't know how fast you travel", "Sometimes we have to get really high to see how small we are," he said. Three hours earlier, Baumgartner, known as "Fearless Felix", had taken off in a pressurised

G-force and made him lose consciousness. A controlled dive from the capsule was essential, putting him in a head down position to increase speed. As things transpired millions of transfixed viewers around the world looked on in agony as the Austrian started tumbling chaotically for what seemed like an eternity before finally achieving the right position. He activated his parachute as he neared earth, gently gliding into the desert east of Roswell and landing without any apparent difficulty. The images triggered another loud cheer from onlookers at mission control, among them his mother, Eva Baumgartner, who was overcome with emotion, crying. C o i n c i d e n t a l l y, Baumgartner's attempted feat also marked the 65th anniversary of US test pilot Chuck Yeager's successful attempt to become the first man to officially break the sound barrier aboard a plane. At Baumgartner's insistence, some 30 cameras on the capsule, the ground and a helicopter recorded the event. While it had been pegged as a live broadcast, organisers said was actually under a 20 second delay in case of a tragic accident. Baumgartner's team included Joe Kittinger, who first attempted to break the sound barrier from 31.4km up in 1960, reaching a speed of 988km/h, just under the sound barrier. As Baumgartner ascended in the balloon, so did the number of viewers watching on YouTube. Nearly 7.3 million watched as he sat on the edge of the capsule moments before jumping. After he landed, Red Bull posted a picture of Baumgartner on his knees on the ground to Facebook, generating nearly 216,000 likes, 10,000 comments and more than 29,000 shares in less than 40 minutes.

Baumgartner had already broken one record before he even leapt: the previous highest altitude for a manned balloon flight was 34,668m, set in 1961. He had been due to jump from 36,576m but the balloon went higher than expected. As he left his capsule from high above earth, he flashed a thumbs up sign, well aware that the feat was being shown on a live stream on the internet with a 20 second delay. Any contact with the capsule on his exit could have torn his pressurised suit, a rip that could expose him to a lack of oxygen and temperatures as low as minus 57 degrees Celsius. That could have caused lethal bubbles to form in his bodily fluids. The biggest risk Baumgartner faced was spinning out of control, which could have exerted excessive

Newcastle Knights coach Wayne Bennett and former star halfback, Andrew Johns have been inducted in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
Bennett and Johns were honoured for their achievements at a ceremony in Melbourne overnight along with six other sporting greats, including champion cyclist Kathy Watt, and cricketer Adam Gilchrist. Olympic champion Sally Pearson was named the most inspirational sporting figure, taking out the Don Award. Bennett, who has seven NRL premierships to his name, says he is humbled by the honour. "When I got the phone call I was sitting at home, it was the last thing on my mind that I would get such a phone call," he said.

Johns says the induction is an honour just two weeks after he was named rugby league's 8th immortal. "You don't set out to achieve those sort of things," he said. "In our game it doesn't get any higher than the immortals, but this is very special because it's picked independent from rugby league people, it's sporting people. "So it's very humbling for myself but also my family." Johns' admissions about recreational drug use during his career had some people criticising his selection as the 8th immortal. He says he is not concerned if his latest honour also receives a similar response. "I've got thick skin," he said. I just got back from Fiji and it's nice and tanned so it will just bounce off."

Ashley-Cooper, Palu return for Wallabies

The Wallabies have made four changes to their lineup for the final Bledisloe Cup clash against New Zealand in Brisbane on Saturday.
The injured Digby Ioane (knee) is replaced by Adam Ashley-Cooper while Wycliff Palu returns to the number eight spot in place of the rested Radike Samo. Scott Higginbotham earned a spot as the starting blindside flanker ahead of Kane Douglas, with Sitaleki Timani starting in the second row. Up front, Benn Robinson replaces James Slipper at loosehead prop in the only other change from the starting side that defeated Argentina in Rosario. The Wallabies kept its fivetwo interchange bench, with Drew Mitchell returning from what was first thought to be a serious ankle injury. "He brings with him allround skill but also a lot of voice in terms of on-field communication, which will be important with a lot of younger players around him." The All Blacks, who have already retained the Bledisloe Cup, are seeking their 17th successive Test victory which would equal the record for top tier rugby nations. Deans's team were the last side to beat the All Blacks, at Lang Park, less than two weeks before the start of last year's World Cup. "The All Blacks are the benchmark and proved it again through the Rugby Championship," Deans said of the world champions' run. "They are a step up from where we've been, but the guys have shown a lot of resilience over the last two months, and they're excited about the opportunity ahead of them on the weekend."

Vettel wins, takes title lead from Alonso

World champion Sebastian Vettel won the Korean Grand Prix in a Red Bull one-two finish on Sunday to take the overall Formula One lead from Ferrari's Fernando Alonso with four races remaining.
Vettel's third win in a row, fourth of the season and 25th of his career, left him on 215 points with third-placed Alonso now on 209. Australian Mark Webber, who had started on pole position but was overtaken by his teammate off the grid into the first corner, finished second to anchor the first one-two of the season by any team. I was able to get side by side and then had the inside into turn one. "It was a perfect start for myself," added the German, who spent the closing laps fretting about the tyres and making sure they held up. With no need to attack his title-chasing team-mate in the closing stages, Webber finished 8.2 seconds behind Vettel. Starting fourth, Spaniard Alonso got ahead of McLaren's Lewis Hamilton at the start but could not close the gap with the Red Bulls on an afternoon where the outcome was effectively decided in the first few seconds. He crossed the line 13.9 seconds behind Vettel. "I think we have to be happy with the performance today," said Alonso, whose Ferrari team (290 points) overtook McLaren (284) for second place in the constructors' standings behind Red Bull (367). understand the bike because yesterday it had some chatter (vibration after braking). "There was one moment I could get right with a right-hand corner so I could pass him and finally I tried to pull some good laps. "I suffered quite a lot of chattering during the race but I could manage." Lorenzo said he tried and failed to open a gap in the race. "Dani came and he was accelerating and there was much difference on the straights," he said. "I tried my maximum but I couldn't follow him." The hard luck story on Sunday was British rider Cal Crutchlow, whose Yamaha expired on the last lap as he was set to claim third place. The Grand Prix tour will stop in Malaysia and Australia in the next two weeks with the finale to thrill Spanish fans at Valencia on November 11.

Oliver dumped from Caulfield Cup mount

The fallout from betting accusations levelled at Damien Oliver has continued, with the top jockey losing his ride in Saturday's Caulfield Cup.
Terry Henderson, who operates the OTI ownership syndicate with former Test cricketer Simon O'Donnell, confirmed Oliver had been replaced by Corey Brown on imported galloper My Quest For Peace. Henderson's announcement coincided with the revelation on Sunday of a stewards investigation into allegations Oliver bet $10,000 on a rival horse in a race in which he was riding in 2010. But Henderson would not directly link the two events. "We've chosen the best rider for the race and that is Corey Brown," he said, adding that he made the best decision he could for the horse. Oliver's dumping from My Quest For Peace, a 20-1 chance in the Cup, comes a day after he lost the ride on Green Moon, the second favourite for Saturday week's Cox Plate. Green Moon will be ridden by his regular partner Craig Williams, who gained a release from the favourite Pierro. In light of the jockey switch and Pierro suffering his first defeat in last Saturday's Caulfield Guineas, the colt has drifted from $1.85 to $3.50 in Cox Plate betting. Williams said he had not instigated the change, saying he had been approached by Green Moon's owner Lloyd Williams and then contacted Pierro's trainer Gai Waterhouse to seek a release. "In the end I was in the position where I had the choice of two really good horses," Williams said. He said one of the deciding factors in favour of Green Moon was Pierro's Cox Plate weight of 49.5kg. "I had to weigh up a couple of options, one was the weight. "I'm very, very comfortable with my decision." Williams would not comment on the Oliver issue nor on allegations made last month that race fixing was rife in Victoria. However he did express frustration at the latest controversy plaguing the industry. Williams says he wants to focus on the good news around the Spring Carnival. "We had great racing on Saturday, and we've got great racing on Saturday, and that's what we want to see on the front page of the newspaper," he said.

Australia, currently ranked third, begins its quest to return to the top of world cricket in the first of three Tests against the topranked South Africa at the Gabba on November 9. of a revival with a 4-0 whitewash of India last summer at home and the emergence of a new generation of rising stars - D a v i d Wa r n e r, J a m e s Pattinson and Pat Cummins. "I make no bones about the Australian team getting back on top," Clarke told the official launch of the Australian cricketing summer in Sydney this week. "It's a really exciting 1215 months, as big a time that I Back-to-back Ashes series will be played for the first time next year in a bid to avoid a scheduling conflict with this year's London Olympics and the 2015 World Cup in Australia. Tamou loving life as a Kangaroo

Australia front rower James Tamou says he feels more comfortable than ever in a Kangaroos jumper after being named players' player by his teammates in Saturday's 1810 win over his native New Zealand.

His partner in crime and North Queensland team-mate Matt Scott was named man-of-the-match, clocking up 180 metres, with the pair laying the platform for a hard-fought victory against an impressive Kiwi side. Tamou caused huge uproar across the Tasman when he elected to play for the Kangaroos earlier this season. The 23-year-old revealed he felt much more comfortable second time around across being hounded by the media in New Zealand following his controversial decision. "There was too much on my and the giant front rower says there was no sledging on the field. He even briefly donned a black jersey after the match when he swapped shirts with life-long friend Ben Matulino. "Benny is a good friend, we grew up together and he wanted to swap jerseys and just out of respect for him I swapped, and then put it on," Tamou said. "Everyone was cool. I just didn't want to show off my Mad Monday guts, which is why I put it on. But the Aussie one fits better." Tamou's reaction to scoring a try was one of exuberance and he admits he did not quite know what to do when he crossed the line, in front of a capacity crowd at his home ground. "I felt in that situation maybe I should run down to the other end of the ground, I didn't know what to do, I don't score many," he said. But it's quite overwhelming. To win the award from my peers in the team is very special. But I am looking forward to the season being over now for a rest."

But this has been beyond anything I could have hope for." Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney and Benji Marshall were keen to draw a line underneath the Tamou saga after the match

That will be followed by three Tests at home against Sri Lanka in December-January, a four-Test tour to India in February-March before back-toback Ashes series away and home. "We started well against India and we are wanting to build on that," Clarke said. "It is a really exciting time for this young side."

"England is always a tough series over there, the Ashes away and the Ashes at home, a very exciting 15 months. South Africa are as good a team as there is in the world. They are not only strong with the ball but they have a lot of batting. It is really important for us to stay focused on them and not to look too far forward."
