B-TECH 4TH YEAR Introduction and history Swimming:-The art of moving in water by wor ing limbs.Swimming costumes have be en around since the 1800s, but it wasn't until the end of World War II that has often been said that the best way for swimmers to optimise their performance is to swim na ed. And until the middle of 19th century, that's exactly what most people did! Nowadays of course, that just won't do, but modern swimwear enables its wearers to move through the water just as efficiently. We investigate the history of the swimsuit At the beginning of the 20th century, most swimming costumes were made of nitte d woollen materials - heavy when wet and not exactly a good loo ! The elite swimmers - including the 1924 British Olympic team - wore outfits made of sil , which was lighter and more comfortable but much more expensive. Rayon - an artificial version of sil - was introduced in the 1930s, but it wasn 't until the 1940s that swimwear technology really too off. Ditching the drag Whatever they designed, manufacturers had to bear in mind the Amateur Swimming A ssociation's rules regarding taste and decency - many of which are still in plac e today. The dilemma was clear - how to create a costume that was attractive and comforta ble without causing offence? Friction became a big issue The answer arrived in the 1940s and 50s, with the development of man-made fabric s li e nylon. They were light, comfortable and cheap to produce. By the 1960s, swimming was big business and top athletes were getting faster all the time. Realising that every second counts, in 1962 the ASA commissioned a report into t he issue of drag. Swimmers and their costumes create a tiny amount of friction as they move throug h the water, which means they don't swim with 100% efficiency. Get ahead with the racing start We're tal ing fractions of a second here, but that could be the difference betwe en gold and silver for an Olympic swimmer. Swimming li e a fish The big swimwear companies were also on the case. In the 1980's Speedo became th e first company to develop nylon/Lycra swimwear. Nylon/Lycra remains popular today Lycra is a lightweight, flexible material used in all sorts of clothing, and nyl on/Lycra garments remain the most popular choice for swimmers today. Speedo's latest innovation - an all-in-one bodysuit designed to mimic the moveme nt of a shar - will be worn by top stars such as Grant Hac ett and Michael Phel ps in Athens. Of course, modern swimming isn't just about technology. Fashion and mar eting pl

ay a huge role, as swimwear companies battle to get the biggest stars wearing th eir gear. It's hard to imagine what they'll thin of next - but with swimmers getting fast er and fashion ever changing, those clever swimwear companies are bound to thin of something ! Sport - Swimming Swimming is a great activity that provides a thorough wor out to all parts of th e body, and is suitable to people of all ages and abilities.Swimming is low impa ct: it doesn't place the stress on your bones and joints li e running and other sports do. Regular swimming builds endurance, muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness. It encourages steady, deep breathing and is excellent for improving lung capacit y. Those with breathing difficulties such as asthma often find swimming a highly effective treatment. You can go at your own pace, you can stop when you're ready, and you can set you r own goals. It requires very little organisation: you don't need to be part of a competition, you don't need to organise a team, and you don't need complicated equipment.So what are you waiting for? Grab your swimmers, your goggles and a t owel, and head down to your nearest pool! You'll feel great for it! Types of Fabric Used for Swimsuits There are a wide variety of fabric used to ma e swimsuits. The assortment of fab rics allows different fits for different body types and varying feels of fabrics against the s in. Personal preference dictates whether a person chooses to swim or sunbathe, but all fabrics used in manufacturing swimsuits serve a specific f unction and have their own durability, as well as disadvantages. History Rayon was the first fabric used in designing a swimsuit, and then Lastex was cre ated. Lastex didn't last long as it didn't maintain shape, wasn't colorfast and was affected by body oils. Types The most common fabrics used in swimsuits today are nylon, cotton, spandex and p olyester. Function Nylon dries fast, is made of strong fibers and fits the body well. Cotton swimsu its are trendy in design but aren't fitted to the body. Spandex is in almost eve ry swimsuit because of its desirable elasticity. Polyester is also fashionable b ut doesn't have the functioning qualities of the other fabrics. Warning Tan through swimwear fabric was developed in the 1980s and 90s, becoming very po pular for those loo ing for an all-over tan; however, warnings about s in cancer made the use of this fabric less popular. Types of Fabrics Used in Bathing Suits Nowadays, the swim-wear industry have upgraded themselves with the use of enhanc ed fabrics such as lycra ,spandex and nylon spandex fabrics that has indeed impr oved the quality of swim-wear products, including bathing suits. Spandex fabric is one of the most commonly used fabrics to improve the quality of the apparel. The popular brand in spandex fabric is 'Lycra'. Yes, I now what you are thin in g, many of us confuse Lycra as a type of fabric and we call it lycra fabric. The fact is that lycra is not the name of the fabric but, it is a popular brand tha t produces spandex fabric. It is produced by Invista that used to be a part of D uPont, an American chemical company that invented spandex. Spandex is a highly elastic synthetic fiber that is much stronger and more durab le than rubber. Invention of this synthetic fiber revolutionized the clothing in dustry, the swim-wear industry being one of the most beneficial amongst all. Spa ndex is used as a fabric not only because of its form-fitting nature but also be cause this fabric breathes. This fabric's unique feature is that it can expand u p to three to four times the normal size and spring bac to its original form wi thout losing the integrity of the fabric. Swimming is an activity that involves immense body movement and spandex fabric provides the comfort to do it with ease because of its elasticity. Basically, bathing suits consist of either polyester plus spandex fabric or they are made of nylon spandex fabrics. What it means is that a considerable amount of the material of the bathing suit contains polyester or nylon and spandex is o nly an additional synthetic fiber that is added to bring in the elasticity. A ba thing suit usually consists of 20-25% of spandex fabric or lycra spandex and the

rest of the fabric is nylon or polyester. When it comes to bathing suit fabrics , nylon spandex material is nown to be more durable. Also, unli e cotton and ot her fabrics, bathing suits are easily washable and can be quic ly dried. These days many of the swimsuit manufacturers do use fabrics containing spandex or the more popular 'lycra' spandex. But, it is imperative to chec the fabric c omposition of the bathing suit as attentively as you loo for the color, pattern and design. A bathing suit fabric that does not contain spandex would not just be a waste of money but, it will also cause discomfort and ma e the whole swimmi ng experience unpleasant. Triump has developed a material which is quic drying, handy for swimming holida ys. It is a mixture of nylon and Lycra with a layer of Telfon, meaning water rol ls off the surface of the suit. Spandex Fiber (I) Introduction In textiles, the man-made fibre with high degree of elasticity used for swimwear is nown as Spandex. Spandex is composed of at least 85% polyurethane by weight. Such fibres are generally used for their highly elastic properties. Trademar ed fibres in this group are Lycra, Numa, Sapndelle and Vyrene. Such fibres have, for many textile purposes, largerly replaced natural and synth etic rubber fibers. Characteristics Although somewhat wea in the relaxed state, Spandex fibres can be stretched abo ut 500-600 percent beyond their length without brea ing and quic ly return to th eir original length. The fibre, usually white and dull lustre, is readily dyed and absorbs very littl e moisture. The fibre melts at 250 C and yellows upons prolonged explore to heat or light. Items made of Spandex can be machine washed and dried at moderate temperatures. Use of chlorine bleach can produce yellowing. Spandex fibres are frequently covered with other fibres li e nylon. End uses Spandex is used in such apparel as foundation garments. Support hosiery and swim suits. It is light in weight and cool. Man-made, nylon is strong, abrasion-resistance and lightweight. Polyester is also strong, resilient, wrin le resistance and washes easily. Best when used in blends with cotton. Cotton is a natural fibre which is strong, inexpensive and absorbent and comfort able in hot weather. o (But it is heavier in weight and wet easily) Elastane is a synthetic stretch fibre which is present in most swimwear, being b lended with nylon, polyester or cotton. It gives swimwear its stretch and resili ence. Fiber and Yarn Generally, textured filament with modified into stretch yarn on false twist are more appropriate for use in swimwear than spun yarn (nature fiber) For spun yarn, worsted system yarn is preferred over woolen system for swimwear, with high twist factor (finer and stronger yarn for nitting) Swimwear Material Speedo: P.B.T. The fabric stretch is affected by:The fabric structure whether the elastomeric yarn is used in bare or covered form A covered form yarn (spandex with an outer sheath of yarn) will normally restric t on its elasticity The degree on its extension and return from elongation will depend on the amount of covering. Caring for swimwear Always warm hand wash with mild soap, rinse after wear in cool water, drip dry o ut of direct sunlight. Do Not use strong detergents or bleach roll up when wet dry clean or iron tumble dry. Avoid contact with rough surfaces, excessive contact with suntan lotions and oil s harsh chemicals present in some pools or hot spas. Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) Over-exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) can cause sunburn, s in damag e and increased ris of s in cancer. Clothing provides one of the most convenient forms of protection against UVR but not all garments offer sufficient sun protection. The UPF rating indicates how effective a fabric is at bloc ing out solar ultravi olet radiation. The testing is performed according to Australian /New Zealand st andard AS/NZ4399. UPF ratings range from 15 to 50 with higher ratings indicating more effective bl oc ing and therefore better protection for the wearer of a garment made from the fabric Factors affecting UPF Rating Composition of the yarns (Polyester, cotton) Tightness of the weave or nit (tighter improves the rating) Colour (dar er colours are generally better) Stretch (more stretch lowers the rating) Moisture (many fabrics have lower ratings when wet) Condition (worn and faded garments may have reduced rating) Finishing (some fabrics are treated with UV absorbing chemicals) Competitive Swimwear Besides UV protection, there was an emphasis on practical swimwear, especially i n competitive swimming. Olympic swimmers felt better in one piece swimsuits such as s in suit. In 1972 Munich Olympic game, these suits were manufactured from very fine cotton that became virtually transparent when wet. Today, this s in suit was made from a thin, light weight Lycra/nylon mixture, wh ich would cling closely to the body and reduce drag. Reducing drag for competitive swimming has been a goal for designers and manufac turers, and Swiss Olympic swimmers in 1972 decided to wear suits which were glue around the nec , leg and arm openings, which prevented water and air bubbles fr om entering the suits.
