His tournament team features players from seven different states, and Doug is thankful for the great relationships he has formed with so many guys who dont call the Long Island MSBL their home. Ten years of play in his local league and the same number of trips to Arizona has provided plenty of opportunities for him to meet and develop friendships with new teammates. They won this years Las Vegas Kickoff Classic. Doug and Ruth Howe have five children to care for, and they enjoy the challenges of parenting and making the team of family work as well. As a kid, he admired former Yankee Don Mattingly but has real concerns how the excessive money spent on his home town team is hurting baseball, keeping smaller market teams from being able to compete for championships. A Long Island teammate, Scott Crohn overcame several family and financial obstacles to come to Arizona one year and while pitching 7 2/3 innings of great ball said he couldnt believe how tired he was. They won the game, but five weeks later he died of a heart attack. It turned out that he had a massive blockage in his arteries. Doug can at least smile knowing how Scott had the opportunity to do what he truly loved.
