13. (a) (i) Explain the working of low pressure mercury vapour lamp with necessary circuit diagram.

Prepared by S. THANGALAKSHMI, Associate professor/EEE, GKMCET,Chennai-63.

(ii) Two street lamps of 20 m apart and fitted with a 500 C.P. lamp at a height of 8m above the ground. Find the illumination at a point under the lamp post and midway between the lamps. (OR) (b) (i) A lamp giving 400 candle power in all directions below the horizontal, is suspended 3m above the center of a square table of 1.5m side. Calculate the maximum and minimum illuminations on the table. (ii) Determine the effective illumination of a drawing room of size 12m x 15m illuminated by 15 lamps of 200 W each. The luminous efficiency of each lamp is 12 lumens/ W. Given, coefficient of utilization -0.6, depreciation factor- 0.8. Assume any other relevant data appropriately. 14. (a) (i) Explain the working of high-frequency coreless induction furnace with neat sketch. (ii) What is pinch effect with respect to heating? Explain how the same is overcome with vertical core type furnace. Use necessary diagram. (OR) (b) A resistance oven employing nichrome wire is to be operated from 220V single phase supply and is to be rated at 16 kW. If the temperature of the element is to be limited to 1170C and average temperature of the charge is 500C find the diameter and length of the element wire. Radiating efficiency is 0.57, emissivity=0.9, specific resistance of nichrome is 109x10-8 15. (a) A train runs between two stations 1.6km apart at an average speed of 36 km/h. If the maximum speed is limited to be 72 km/h, acceleration to 2.7 km/h/s, coasting retardation 0.18 km/h/s and braking retardation 3.2 km/h/s, compute the duration of acceleration, coasting and braking periods. Assume a simplified speed-time curve. (OR) (b)(i) What is tractive effort of a train and what are its fuctions? Derive an expression for the tractive effort developed by a train. (ii) Discuss briefly the modern traction control methods.
