PoE Detector

Instruction Sheet
The PoE detector is a passive device that senses power over Ethernet (PoE) voltage on twisted pair network cabling. The impedance of the detector simulates the load of a PoE device to turn on an attached PoE source. The detector shows you if there is 802.3af, 802.3at, and unsolicited power on pairs 12-36 and 4578.

Detecting PoE Voltages

Connect the detector to a network outlet, as shown below.

WWarning:
The detector can become hot to the touch if it is connected to an energized network outlet for an extended period. Do not leave the detector connected for more than five minutes.

WCaution
Never attempt to insert any connector other than an 8-pin modular (RJ45) connector into the detector's jack. Inserting other connectors, such as RJ11 (telephone) connectors, can permanently damage the jack.

Connecting the Detector to a Network PoE sources typically supply voltage within 5 to 30 seconds. Note The detector can turn on the activity LED on a hub or switch.

A The 12-36 LED lights if PoE voltage is detected on pair 12-36. B The AT LED lights if the source equipment can meet the
802.3at standard. 802.3at equipment can supply higher power levels than 802.3af equipment. Note The AT LED will not light if the equipment supplies unsolicited power at higher levels.
