The Oct. 27 event, sponsored by First
Freedom Bank and University Medical
Center and held by The Lebanon Demo-
crat, will feature seminars every half hour
throughout the day from motivational
speaker and local coupon expert Ann
Haney.
Haney will discuss topics, including
The 1-2-3 s of Successful Couponing,
Maximizing Savings While Minimizing
Time, Discovering Drug Store Rewards
For Dynamic Savings and From Clipping
Coupons To Debt-Free Living.
Haney, a mother of six, said her pas-
sion for coupon clipping began three years
ago as a way to offset effects of the reces-
sion. Like most of the American workforce,
Haneys husband, who is in the construc-
tion industry, experienced a fnancial set-
back.
Instead of approaching the obstacle
burdened with worry, Haney was proac-
tive and looked for ways to do more with
less.
I heard that couponing could save a
lot of money. It saved my family $800 a
month, she said. Basically, that would
make a house payment. I spend $60 a
week for eight people, which is phenom-
enal.
First Freedom Bank will sponsor Haney
at the Every Womans Expo.
We are proud to sponsor Ann; she
brings a wealth of knowledge and can re-
late to her audience because she knows
from experience the struggles of fnancial
diffculties, said Maliea Oakley, First Free-
dom Bank senior vice president and retail
division manager. Her goal is to empower
people and teach them tools to achieve f-
nancial success.
In addition to fnancial tips from Haney,
a number of health topics will be discussed
at the Every Womans Expo. According to
University Medical Center director of com-
munity and volunteer services Jeannie Far-
ley, a number of hospital experts will be on
hand to present information and answer
questions.
Radiologist Dr. Michael R. Couden will
present a seminar on uterine fbroid em-
bolization, a less invasive alternative to
hysterectomy. Presenting Things every
woman needs to know about her body
will be Dr. Clainda Burton-Shannon with
Womens Wellness of Lebanon. Dr. Alisa
Bowerstock with Womens Health Clinic
will present The answers to the questions
you were afraid to ask.
UMC Surgical Services Director Kathy
Romero will present a discussion on the
surgical solution to weight loss from a pa-
tients perspective. Radiologist Dr. Lucy B.
Spalluto will speak on womens imaging.
The expo begins at 9:30 a.m. and will
wrap up about 1:30 p.m. in Lebanon High
Schools common area and cafeteria.
Other seminars and activities will be
held simultaneously, including Zumba,
dance, self-defense and karate demonstra-
tions.
The event will be at Lebanon High
School and beneft the Lebanon High
School cheerleaders.
Cheer coach Amanda Hargis said the
money raised would be used for mats and
to fund trips to competitions.
Tickets are $5 each for adults and chil-
dren under 12 are admitted free. Tickets are
available at The Lebanon Democrat offce,
the front lobby at University Medical Cen-
ter, On-Call Medical and Pharmacy, Crystal
Couture, Pulse Hair Salon, MoCarra res-
taurant and Honey Baked Ham.

According to University Medical Center community
and volunteer services director Jeannie Farley, three pre-
senting doctors and one nurse are on tap for the Oct. 27
event at Lebanon High School. In addition to the hospital,
the Every Womans Expo is sponsored by First Freedom
Bank and held by The Lebanon Democrat.
University Medical Center will have Dr. Alisa Bower-
stock and Dr. Clarinda Burton-Shannon on hand to talk
about the hospitals mammography department in rec-
ognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, along with
other womens health topics including The Answers to
the Questions You were Afraid to Ask.
Dr. Mark G. Kent will also present information on the
hospitals bariatric weight-loss program and its effectiveness.
UMC Surgical Services Director Kathy Romero will pres-
ent a discussion on the surgical solution to weight loss from
a patient perspective.
This is a great opportunity for women to learn more
about these important health issues through the Univer-
sity Medical Center and other groups offering seminars
throughout the day, said Farley

North American women may want to take health ad-
vice from women in other areas of the world. As it turns
out, international women may have the secrets to liv-
ing longer and avoiding medical conditions that seem to
plague women in the U.S. and Canada.
Heres how women across the globe are living longer,
healthier lives.
Women can

practice portion control
Although youve probably heard it before, reducing
the amount that you eat can have its benefts, including
weight loss. Many people remark how the French dine
on cheese and butter and still manage to stay skinny.
That is because they are eating in moderation, not mak-
ing an entire meal out of two pounds of cheese. Smaller
portions and maintaining an active lifestyle are two ways
that many French women stay slim and healthy.

stay active in your community
Japanese culture emphasizes family connections
and maintaining an extensive support system. The Jap-
anese stay active into older adulthood, which could be
why the island region of Okinawa is known for having
the highest concentration of centenarians in the world.
According to research, Okinawans, when compared to
Americans, have an 80 percent lower rate of many can-
cers, including ovarian and breast cancer.
Eat locally
Do you want to look like a faxen-haired Scandina-
vian woman? Many do. Northern Europeans tend to
eat farm-to-table, which means consuming things that
they or their neighbors have grown and raised. Foods
that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fsh, in
combination with native vegetables and berries help
keep obesity statistics very low. Scandinavians also eat
game birds and elk, which produce meat that tends to
be leaner than the types of farm-raised livestock North
Americans rely on.
Go heart-healthy
The Mediterranean Diet has been touted in recent
years. Women in Italy and Greece set a good example
by serving foods that are rich in heart-healthy antioxi-
dants and good fats. Nuts, whole grains, fsh and ol-
ives are hearty and heart-healthy foods. Mediterranean
cultures also use wine to improve heart health, help
prevent cancer and slow the progression of neurologi-
cal diseases, like Parkinsons and Alzheimers. Studies
have also shown that moderate amounts of alcohol can
raise your good cholesterol and thin your blood.
Adopting the healthy habits of others across the
globe can help North American women live longer,
healthier and more productive lives.
Eating foods that
are often found in
mediterranean
diets, such as
vegetables, is
one way to
improve health.

Fatigue and minor aches and pains that often come with
aging can make exercise seem like a wrong activity for older
women to partake in. While every woman should discuss
her specifc physical condition with a physician, especially
if those aches and pains are persistent, adopting a sedentary
lifestyle is not likely to make things better.
The misconception that aging women should save their
strength and rest is one of the many myths associated with
exercise and older women. The following are a few of the
more popular myths that many women would be better off
ignoring.
Exercise is for younger women, I need to rest.
A sedentary lifestyle isnt healthy for anyone, and aging
women are no exception. When aging women are inac-
tive, their ability to do things for themselves and on their
own decreases. This includes daily and relatively simple
tasks like watering the plants or taking the dog for a walk,
or more strenuous activities like playing with their grand-
children. Even if you cant go jogging like you used to,
that doesnt mean you wont still beneft from less diffcult
exercises.
Exercise increases my risk of injury.
Aging women might fear that the more they exercise,
the more they may fall and suffer a serious injury. Howev-
er, the opposite is true. Regular exercise strengthens mus-

cles and prevents bone loss while improving balance. This means
aging women who exercise are less likely to fall. Even if you do
fall, your bones will be stronger and more capable of handling a
fall than an older woman who does not exercise at all.
Im disabled so exercise is pointless.
Aging women beneft from exercise, even those women who
might be disabled. Even if you need a wheelchair to get around,
that doesnt mean you wont still beneft from routine exercise.
Women in wheelchairs can still do cardiovascular exercises,
stretch and even lift light weights. Such activities can reduce risk
of heart disease while improving muscle tone and increasing range
of motion.
Its too late to begin a new exercise regimen.
Its never too late for anyone, including aging women, to begin
a new exercise regimen. If its been awhile since you last laced up
your sneakers, start light with a walk around the neighborhood
and other activities that wont elevate your heart rate or prove
overly taxing. As your body gradually gets acclimated to exercise,
you can up the ante a little bit with slightly more challenging ex-
ercises.
Im too tired to exercise.
As women age, some fnd they struggle to get a decent nights
sleep and mistakenly assume this is just a natural side effect of ag-
ing. The following day the resulting fatigue causes some women
to feel they are too tired to exercise. However, exercise can actually
improve sleep and helps many active people sleep more deeply
and without interruption. If you have been struggling to sleep
through the night, use exercise to your advantage and you might
fnd youre suddenly sleeping much, much better.

Many women love to shop. Be
it hunting down the perfect pair of
heels or scouring the stores for an
ideal evening gown, shopping is of-
ten a far bigger thrill for women than
it is for men.
Since the dawn of the Internet,
more and more women have em-
braced online retailers, choosing to
forgo crowded malls or department
stores in favor of shopping online
from the comfort of home. As easy
as online shopping can be, it also
comes with more risk to a shoppers
privacy than shopping in person at
a nearby store. Those privacy issues
continue to concern online shop-
pers, many of whom are reticent to
share personal information over the
Internet for fear of falling victim to
identity theft. In fact, a 2008 survey
from Pew Internet found that 75
percent of Internet users do not like
giving out their credit card number
or other personal information on-
line. Those fears are warranted, but
women can take certain measures
to better protect themselves when
shopping online.
Use only secure Web sites
when shopping online. The best
thing women can do to protect their
privacy when shopping online is to
shop only from secure Web sites.
Such sites employ encryption tech-
nology that transfers a consumers
information from her computer
to the online retailers computer,
scrambling the information, includ-
ing a shoppers credit card number,
along the way to prevent hackers
from accessing those details.
A secure Web site will have a
slightly different URL than one that
is not secure. Instead of beginning
with http://, a secure Web sites
URL begins with https://. The s
lets consumers know the Web site is
secure. In addition, look for a closed
padlock at the bottom of the screen,
which is another indicator that a
Web site is secure.
Know who youre buying from.

of shopping. While theres certainly

Q. Do Home Care Aids at @Home Care
have medical training or a medical background?
A. Personal care assistance companies like @Home Care provide services to clients based on non
medical protocols. Our company is licensed by the State of Tennessee and we comply with an exact
defnition of assistance we provide as it relates to medical requirements.
It is a plus when our Aids have skilled backgrounds and/or experiences in facilities, however
great home care aids often do not have a skilled background but their experiences with other entities
and the training they receive from our company make them exceptional.
Our staff development training is ongoing though out the year and monthly materials covers a
variety of how to issues that enhance their skills and provides our clients the care they deserve.
It has been said that there are only four kinds of people , those who have been a caregiver,
those who are a caregiver, those who will be a caregiver, and those who will need care. Wherever you
are in one of these groups, we hope you will put @Home Care on the top of your list of non-medical
home care providers.

women know who theyre buying
from before entering any personal
information and placing any orders.
Most shoppers feel safest when doing
business only with those online retail-
ers theyre familiar with. However,
sometimes its necessary to buy from
other Web sites. If so, research the site
before making any purchases. A repu-
table online retailer will boast easily

shop with a credit card. Laws
exist in both the United States and
Canada to protect online shoppers
from fraud if their purchases are made
with credit cards. Americans, for in-
stance, are protected by the Fair Credit
Billing Act, which gives shoppers the
right to dispute charges on their credit
card and withhold payment while the
disputed charges are investigated. Use
this protection to your advantage by
using only credit cards to make online
purchases.
play things close to the vest. On-
line retailers will likely request a host
of information, only some of which
is necessary to complete a purchase.
Shoppers dont have to answer ques-
tions about their lifestyle, income or
other personal information that has
nothing to do with their actual pur-
chase. Volunteering information about
lifestyle or income often leads to spam
e-mail that targets shoppers based on
their responses to unnecessary inqui-
ries when buying items online. Only
fll out the bare minimum amount of
information when checking out.
Try to shop domestic. Shopping
domestic, or buying exclusively from
retailers located within your own coun-
try, is another way shoppers can pro-
tect themselves from fraud. Laws that
protect consumers may only apply to
purchases made within the same coun-
try. In addition, items bought online
from another country are likely to cost
more money to ship.
A 2010 report from the Nielsen
Company revealed that women are
more engaged in many online purchase
categories, including clothes, travel
and home accessories, than their male
counterparts. As women continue to
rely on the Internet for their purchases,
they must also continue to focus on
protecting their privacy.

When First Freedom Bank was founded, nearly six
years ago, its organizers knew what this business was
going to be about: the people in our community. With
that focus in mind, First Freedom bank became one
of the fastest growing businesses in Wilson County.
Hometown business for First Freedom bank translates
into local employees, local costumers, local directors
and local ownership. John Lancaster, president and
CEO of the bank, attributes First Freedoms achieve-
ments mainly to the founders and the employees. We
had a common vision of how this bank could serve
our community, said Lancaster. The organizers of the
bank are highly involved in the community and each
one brings a different perspective to the table. This cus-
tomer-service driven business has reached more than
250 million in assets in just six years.
The recipe for success is First Freedoms techno-
logically advanced services: there are no early cut-off
times for deposits, the ATM withdrawals are free on
selected accounts and remote deposit options are of-
fered for business accounts. Customers may view cur-
rent mortgage rates and apply for a mortgage in the
comfort of their own home via First Freedoms online
mortgage application process. First Freedom custom-
ers also have the beneft of participating in the banks
debit card reward program, which consists of earning
points for every dollar they spend that can be used for
plane tickets, prizes and such.
First Freedom bank has three different offces: Leb-
anon, Mt Juliet and the Providence marketplace area.
The new Lebanon offce was just been completed ear-
lier this summer. Our new main offce refects First
Freedom banks commitment to the Lebanon and Wil-
son County communities. The new building has space
for expansion, an important feature as First Freedom
Bank looks forward to serving the Wilson County com-
munity for many years, said Lancaster. The Leba-
non offce comes alive with its welcoming design and
quaint pocket park for the community to enjoy. The
15,000 square foot building includes advanced tech-
nology and other features to support operational, ef-
fciency, energy effciency and sustainability.
Its all about taking care of people says Lancaster.
People deserve excellent service, convenient hours
and a reliable internet banking system. They want to
deal with a knowledgeable banker, who can give them
a straight answer-today. First Freedom bank welcomes
you at their Lebanon location, 1620 West Main Street,
