Signs and Symbols

Slide 1: Karoline We are going to talk about Islamic signs and symbols. We will show you a selection of different symbols and discuss their meaning. The symbol you can see here is called the Star and Crescent Moon and we will talk more about this symbol later in our presentation. Slide 2: Islamic Symbols and Signs Emily Islam itself has no official sign or symbol that represents it as there are no such symbols mentioned in the Quran or the hadith. This is unlike other faiths such as Judaism which is represented by the Star of David and Christianity which is represented by the cross. Instead, the signs that are associated with Islam today are remnants of past empires and modern Arab nationalism, and are in fact nothing to do with the actual belief at all. Slide 3: The Star and Crescent Martin Where exactly this sign came from is unknown, but it was the flag of the Ottoman Empire which was the dominant muslim power for almost 700 years. Because people always connect the Ottomans with Islam, and because the Ottomans represented Islam, their flag became known as Islams flag. It was also used by the people of Central Asia and Siberia to worship the sun, moon and sky gods. As said before, the Prophet Muhammad never confirmed this to be a symbol of Islam, it only really came about to be so because of other cultures associating it with Islam and the Muslim people accepting this. Today it is featured on the many flags of the Islamic world, including Turkey and Pakistan. Slide 4: Shahadatain Karoline This is another common Islamic symbol called Shahadatain meaning two Shahadahs. The word Shahadah means the muslim statement of faith. This symbol actually represents Islam more than the Star and Crescent does as it is more relevant. Because In order to become a Muslim, you must recite the Shahadah. Slide 5: The Eight Pointed Star Emily This symbol appears often in the Islamic religion, and can be seen in the Quran, in mosques and in on flags. It is also called seal of prophets, as in signet ring. The eight pointed star was also used often in Islamic art. The eight pointed star symbolizes balance and harmony. And it was likely inspired by the jewish symbol seal of solomon.

Slide 6: Hand of Fatima Martin Fatima is the Prophet Muhammad's daughter, and hamsa is the hand of fatima. The hand of Fatima symbolizes patience, loyalty, faith and resistance against difficulties. Its a very well known good luck amulet and protection in the world of Islam. The amulet is hung on walls and is usually painted silver, gold or red and its believed that a house protected by the hand of Fatima can not catch on fire.

Slide 7: Colours That Represent Islam Karoline/Emily Certain colours are also very symbolic in Islam. The most important ones are green and white. The colour green is mentioned by Allah in the Quran as the colour of clothing in paradise. In the Islamic caliphate which was the first government system in Islam that represented the political unity of the Muslim Ummah (Ummah means the Muslim people), the Umayyad Caliphate had White flags while the Abbasid Caliphate had black flags. Today the flags of the countries of the Islamic world often display the Pan-Arabism colours: Red, White, Green and Black.
