Wheatland Family and Community Support Services, under the direction of Lynn Walker (Home Support Administrator) called a public information meeting with concerned residents, staff and representatives of town council at the Legion on Oct. 19 with regard to the future of WFCSS Home Support Services in the area. The tension-filled meeting was chaired by Walker, who was assisted by members of town council in asking the questions and responding with the answers that were formally compiled by town staff. The Town of Strathmore recognized that both clients and staff had concerns with regard to the transition of services from the Wheatland FCSS to the Strathmore FCSS. Understanding that few people like change the town wanted to reassure residents and staff that the excellent quality of services will be maintained with the transition. The meeting was structured to answer a set of premade questions (submitted by clients who had written statements to be read by Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Dwight Stanford, Catherine Walsh, the new Coordinator for FCSS Strathmore, and Dave Coates). The questions and answers were meant to alleviate fears and concerns about the quality and personal services that WFCSS home support services provided with caring and supportive staff, and that those things would not change with the towns take over of the Home Support Services. WFCSS was informed on July 25, 2012 of the towns retracting and pending dissolution of their partnership with the five municipalities of Strathmore, County of Wheatland, Rockyford, Standard and Hussar, says WFCSS board representative Ron Corbiel. He also said that (They) WFCSS have been asking for meetings with the town council to discuss not only the home support services but also other critical programs such as the Food Bank and Christmas hampers. The members of the WFCSS board are hoping to have a meeting in the immediate near future so that there can be clarity on both sides of the issues at hand. However, two very poignant questions were made by resident Godfrey Baldwin that were not really answered directly which should have been asked of the residents themselves, those being 1. Are you satisfied with the services that have been provided? And 2. Why then the change, what is the reason for stirring it up and handling it in the wrong way? Baldwins questions to the chair and representatives of town council were met with overwhelming applause from the floor. Continued on Page 2

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Earlier this year a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the Town and H&H Huxted Enterprises regarding recycling services. The 10-year arrangement has Huxted taking care of the recycling yard services at least at its current level of quality, if not better. The terms of conditions have been defined within the MOU. Included in the 10-year-contract Huxted will receive approximately five acres of land at the current recycle yard as compensation for the first five years of the contract. The remaining five will be based on an annual assessment of the recycling operations financial position. For the first five years there is no cost to the Town, and in the final five years the

maximum charge to the Town will be $100,000. The recycle yard had been operated with a more than $160,000 per year deficit. The worst-case scenario will see the Town paying a total of $500,000 over the next 10 years versus the minimum $1.6 million if they stuck with the current operators. Councillor Earl Best voiced concerns about the proposal. I feel giving away five acres of town land is atrocious. I feel that paying up to $100,000 annually for services that we dont do that we can help a private industry with their business is precedent setting and I certainly can not be in favour of this, said Best. Councillor Bob Sobol questioned the $100,000 amount that was being proposed. Jesse Parker, director of engineering and operations for the town said he
has spoken with Huxted and that there would be a financial assessment of the status of the business annually. The assessment will look at the revenues and expenses to determine fair compensation up to $100,000 for years six to 10 of the contract. The land to be transferred to Huxted will be subdivided and transferred with a clause that if the contract is broken in the first five years it will be returned to the town. Councillor Dave Hamilton made a motion for the contract to be awarded to H&H Huxted as outlined in the proposal put forth by administration. The compensation includes the five acres of land and the annual amount will be determined in six to 10 years, and is not to exceed $100,000. Approximately $900,000 could be saved over the next 10 years. Councillor Earl Best was opposed to the motion.

Continued from Page 1 The response from the representatives was that Home Support is just one aspect of the program, and they were trying to make the transition as seamless as possible. Once established the Town of Strathmore would have no jurisdiction over the county residents and that they would have to obtain services for their clients by having the services contracted out. The question at the top of everyones mind was Why does the town have to take over home support when it is working well already? and the answer that was given by town staff was Municipalities are ultimately responsible for delivering programs under the FCSS Legislation and Funding Agreements with the province. Because FCSS is a municipal program, and Home Support is part of that program, the town is responsible to provide this service to our town citizens.

As far as staffing went, those who had been servicing clients both in town and in the county could continue to do so, and the only difference being was that they would then have two employers, two pay stubs, two T-4s etc and it would depend on whether the individual staff wanted to continue on as a town employee, and also if the client wanted to retain the same home support worker. The town said they wanted to retain the services (with their workers) for the clients they already served in the Town of Strathmore and had no problem if staff wanted to continue with the care and services to county members but those would be remitted by whatever contracts were made with county officials to obtain those services themselves. the folks know that it wasnt really up for a discussion and that it is a done deal folks. The transition will be finalized and the amalgamation will be completed on Jan. 1. David Coates informed those gathered that the provincial governments legislation next year would be directing municipalities to be taking these programs over anyway, and so Strathmore is getting a bit of a head start. Walker is available for comments and concerns from all clients and staff and can be reached at lwalker@wfcss. org at the current WFCSS offices or phoning the office at (403) 934-5335. Catherine Walsh officially started her position as the new FCSS Coordinator for the Town of Strathmore on Oct. 15. Walsh assured those gathered that I hear the fear and tension from you and I am open to hear from anyone (clients or staff) to help alleviate any concerns you may have with this transition, my office is open. Citizen of the Month Learning fire safety

The three Kindergarten classes at Brentwood elementary school had a chance to meet a few of their local firefighters from the Strathmore Fire Department (SFD) on Oct. 19. The students learned fire safety measures, and had a chance to climb up on the truck. Councillor earl Best nominated the Wheatland Food Bank as his choice for the September Citizen of the month distinction. Best spoke of the 3,684 volunteer hours that went into the food bank last year. During which 748 hampers fed 1,173 adults and 888 children. Community bands together to make a wish come true

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter In the midst of the blame being tossed in the countrys largest E. coli scare, people can often forget those affected by the bacteria. Four-year-old Sarah Demoskoff contracted E. coli after eating lean ground beef which was later determined to be from the XL Meats beef recall. Demoskoff spent 24 days in the Childrens Hospital battling bacteria. The E-coli turned into HUS (Hemolytic-uremic syndrome) which causes kidney failure and anemia. Her kidneys completely shut down so she had to go on dialysis and then she had to have two blood transfusions, said mom Cheryl Walsh. Walsh was terrified, especially when the doctors were unsure what each night was going to bring in the beginning. Sarah is now off of dialysis and is home and doing well, but she will need to be monitored for the rest of her life. Until she is 18 she will have to be checked at the Childrens Hospital and once she turns 18 she will be referred to an adult neufrologist. Apparently with kidneys youre born with all of your little filters and when they shut down like that they dont all re-open and they (the doctors) dont know how many do. All they know is right now she has enough for her height and weight to keep her healthy, but as she grows they just have to monitor her, said Walsh. Sarah is a Justin Bieber fan, and one way Walsh tried to help her daughter keep her mind off of her treatments was by playing his music and videos. Once it became clear that Sarah would be coming home, and knowing the Bieber was playing in Calgary soon, Walsh put the word out on her communitys Facebook group to see if anyone knew where she could buy tickets to take Sarah. Walsh said the support that came through was almost overwhelming. She began receiving messages from people saying they had emailed Justin Bieber himself, the mayor of Calgary, the Flames and many more. When Virgin Radio heard about Walshs hunt for the tickets they got in touch with her. They called me in the morning, I was still sleeping and I woke up and there was like three missed calls on my phone. So I called back the number and when I called back it was Adam Wylde from Virgin and they sort of asked me what was up with Sarah, how it went, said Walsh. They explained the contest that they had going on which was Brave for Bieber and the challenges. They said that they thought that Sarah had been brave enough so they gave her two tickets.

Walsh has lived in Langdon for four and a half years. She said in day-to-day life you know your neighbours but it isnt until you go through a crisis that you really find out how much of a community a place is. Langdon opened up their hearts for her daughter, something she will never forget. Sarah was singing along and had a blast at the concert. Walsh said the community also banded together to give Sarah some spending money for while she was at the concert. With the money Sarah got a hoodie, a book full of pictures and a t-shirt.

Looking to recruit
Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Dr. Fanning approached council at the Oct. 10 administration meeting about setting up a plan to recruit new full-service doctors to the community. One suggestion he had for recruiting is advertising in a number of forms, and another is meeting with students and promoting the town. At the Oct. 17 regular council meeting, council approved the creation of a Strathmore physician recruitment committee. Summer gameS A committee has been formed for the Alberta 55 Summer Games Bid. Councillor Dave Hamilton and two community members had previously been appointed to the committee and as of Oct. 17 Gail Galusha and Joss Bins have also joined. Light iSSueS Concerns were raised to Councillor Pat Fule via Facebook about the phased lights at the intersection of Hwy 1 and Lakeside Blvd. Early in the morning the turn signal for the north-facing lane has not been working. Councillor Earl Best goes through that intersection almost daily, and has encountered the problem. Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford said the issue would be looked into.

Helping the community one trick-or-treat at a time

Jonah Zankl SHS Student Leadership Club Co-President Trick-or-treating, costumes, and candy are what most kids think about at Halloween. For many students at Strathmore High School however, they think of the Food Bank, and helping the global community. Instead of going door to door for candy, these students will be collecting non-perishable items and spare change, aiming to help those locally and around the globe. In the past, the group has only collected food, but this year they have partnered with another school group, Me to We, a group of students that are passionate about helping on the global scale. The change collected will be used help build a school in Kenya, through the charity Free the Children. This will help us tremendously with our fundraising efforts, to be able to team up with SLC, said Me to We member Carlee McIsacc, one of the coordinators of the change drive. Im so happy we were able to work together. The SLC hopes to make this year even more successful, a hard feat after collecting enough to fill a Suburban last year. Co-president Robert Jacobs is confident however, as over 50 students will hit the sidewalks on Oct. 31. Its a great way to get the school involved with the community and to work together as a team to assist those in need, he said. The group plans to make it to every house in town; residents can help them make it to every door by having any donations ready, whether it be non-perishable food items or their change. Anything that can be contributed is appreciated. All students that are collecting will be wearing ID tags from the school.

Pat Fule Fule for Thought Lately, I have re-discovered the joys and frustrations of video gaming. Its always been a love-hate thing with me, as I enjoy the pastime, but it can pull me in, and can become an obsession. Back in the dark ages of 1978, my university roommates and I chipped in and bought one of the first video game machines. Many of you will remember the incredible graphics of the black and white blip that you could actually control on the TV screen! Wow, were we ever simple back then! Remember the excitement and thrill of controlling that blip, as you played tennis? Then you could switch over to hockey and even have a white blip as your goalie! If you squinted your eyes, you could almost picture Ken Dryden or Mike Palmateer in net! You could feel the excitement of the crowd the tension of each save or goal! Actually, if you DID squint, youd lose the blip! My daughter was never as taken with video games as Brennen, and in order for us to ever beat him, we had to team up against him! It would be the two of us versus him in Segas Wayne Gretzkys Hockey. That was the game, where if you scored a certain way, the goalies net would burst into flame, or hed be trapped under the net, like a cage good times. But nothing compared to shooting Brennens air ship down in flames in Star Fox. Breanne and I would cheer, do a victory rub it in dance, even if we were being out-killed 32-1! Nintendo 64 was great, and Im sure many of you raced in Mario Carts, or played as James Bond in Goldeneye. Sadly, Brennen was always able to learn and remember game places, hunt me down, and kill me at will. Breanne and I continued to gang up on Brennen it was the only way to survive in the games we played! I think it brought us together as father-daughter, too! After all, what could be better than blasting away at your brother, while your dad cheers you on?! Deb has always felt I needed a hobby. I guess she felt drinking really wasnt one! You all know theres no safe way for me to EVER work with power tools, OR sharp devices! So I thought Id get back into video games. These games have come so far!! Football games can be set for different weather conditions, and you can even see the snow fall, or the steam coming from players. All that realism just made it worse, as it really felt like I WAS being destroyed on the playing by Brennen AGAIN. Hes the type of player who tells you how the controls work AFTER youve started, so that you get crushed while learning. We were playing a Nazi Zombie game, where you have to destroy them as they keep attacking all very stressful. Brennen decided it would be fun to have us play online. Soon, I was a soldier on screen running for my life! Ive discovered that if you have NO sense of direction in real life, its the same in video games. Everything looks the same to me its like watching Fred Flintstones car drive and the same background just keeps going by. Over and over, Id get killed by zombies and Brennens soldier would have to find and revive me. The problem was we were online, and I could hear voices from all around. I was sure one of them was mocking me! He kept saying that my name (you sign in as a code name) sucked and that no one should help me! I asked Brennen who that was and his reply was: oh, thats some little kid in California, he thinks hes better than he is! I was being mocked by a kid I didnt even know! Lately, Ive been playing Arkham City, a Batman game. Because of my lack of direction, I continue to get lost in this video city. Its fun, but very frustrating. Ive even had to turn to Aaron, one of my students, to be my advisor. Whenever Im stuck, he tells me what to do to get past the spot, so I can move on. If it wasnt for him, Id be stuck in one place for the whole game! I think Debbie is questioning her PS3 gift me last Christmas she has to listen to the yells of frustration, and the odd curse words of frustration. Of course, I always have my trusty sidekick Brodie by my side. EVERY superhero needs a sidekick! So, Ill sign off now I just saw the Bat Signal its time to kick a little criminal butt! Its not easy being a crime fighter, but someones gotta do it! Golden Hills reports improvement in student achievement

Golden Hills scHool division Golden Hills School Division is performing well and continues its journey on improvement, according to the most recent results on the Provincial Achievement Tests and Diploma Examinations. We appreciate the excellent work done by our teachers and administrators in improving the success of our students, said Bevan Daverne, Superintendent of Schools. We continue to make gains in achievement results of our students with a strong emphasis on improving teaching practice. Trends over three years show Golden Hills improved the percentage of students achieving the acceptable standard in seven of the ten achievement tests from Grades 3, 6 and 9. Additionally, the percentage of students achieving the Standard of Excellence improved in six of the ten achievement tests, which is an increase over the previous year. Grade 3, 6 and 9 Language Arts are above provincial average for the number of student achieving acceptable standard. The number of students participating in the 2011/2012 provincial achievement tests exceeded the provincial average in all subject areas. There were improvements in four out of the nine diploma courses over results of the previous year (Social 301, English 301, Pure Math 30, Biology 30) for number of students achieving acceptable standard. In four out of nine courses, Golden Hills students met or exceeded the provincial Standard of Excellence benchmark of 15 per cent (Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Pure Math 30, Physics 30). As well, there were notable improvements in the number of students achieving a Standard of Excellence in Physics 30 and Applied Math 30. The emphasis on professional development to improve instructional practice and the culture of using data and research to inform teaching contributes significantly to these results, commented Dr. Kandace Jordan, Associate Superintendent of Instructional Services. The emphasis on developing sound assessment for learning practices among our teaching staff and prioritizing curriculum objectives is helping to change teaching practice. The addition of instructional coaches and focusing our administrators on school and instruction improvement is having a positive impact on the success of our students. Daverne says, we continue to work toward providing learning environments in our classrooms that foster the growth of innovative thinkers, doers and connectors. It is important that our students not only do well on the Provincial tests, but are also prepared to be successful in our modern world with developing technology and constant change. The Provincial Achievement and Diploma Examination results are measures included in the provincial Accountability Pillar Result. Other indicators include dropout rates, high school completion, post secondary transition rates and a variety of stakeholder satisfaction measures. Principals present their schools results, along with important contextual information, to parents at School Council meetings and through the Annual Education Plans and Results Reports, which will be posted by Nov. 30. The Board of Trustees reviewed the division and each schools results in accordance with provincially developed protocols. The Board has reviewed with administrators the provincial testing results for the diploma exams and provincial achievement tests as presented for 2011/2012 by administration in a monitoring report, said Dave Price, Chair. Graphs from multi-year reports of the jurisdiction results were presented, trends and unique circumstances were discussed, and a plan was also presented for teacher development with an emphasis on improving teaching practice. The Board appreciates the direction administration is taking and is appreciative of the efforts of administration and school staff to improve student success. I strongly encourage parents to attend the meetings where Principals review results and discuss the schools plans for improving student success. Rockyford residents explore the possibility of a dog park

The Strathmore off-leash dog park is a great place for dog owners to go and let their dogs exercise, meet people and have a good time. It has been successful and has some Rockyford residents hoping to get a dog park of their own. Charlotte Bencharski, a new face in the Rockyford community, said that although she [loves] the village and the people the town could be improved with a dog park. I didnt think before I moved someplace that I would have to investigate the fact that I want to walk my dogs, she says. Bencharski says that dog parks provide a great social environment for both the dogs and the people, and she thinks it will help get people out and meeting each other. She also points out that if your dogs are able to get more exercise during the day, there will be less barking at night. There are a lot of dogs in Rockyford so we have a lot of barking at two or three in the morning, said Bencharski. In terms of size, Bencharski says that the Strathmore dog park (which is four acres) is a great model for the dog park she wants, but is perhaps a little big. While Bencharski hasnt spent too much time looking at land for the dog park, there are a few possibilities, such as the land that CN Rail has where the
trains have stopped coming through, or extra land from farmers. Bencharski has contacted a few people about possibly renting or buying space, and has raised some interest. Funding for this project is estimated to be quite low, since Bencharski plans to purchase the chain-link fencing needed herself. Other necessities such as park benches, garbage bins and signs can be bought from fundraiser money or donated, since they are fairly inexpensive. I do have a lot of people who are willing to donate, she said. Bencharski also plans to build the dog park herself once she has all the equipment at no cost to the village. I think thats going to help because when we went to the council meeting, that was the first thing they were little a leery about was money. Along with going to council meetings, Bencharski has posted flyers in both Rockyford and Strathmore and admits I dont know what else to do. I think people are worried about, what if my dog bites your dog, what if my dog bites your kid, she explains, which has been the source of some controversy for the Strathmore dog park as well. While Bencharski admits shes not completely informed on how those laws work, she has time to figure it out and believes its a very manageable issue. You dont see a lot of it in the papers

Bencharki thinks most people dont understand why Rockyford needs a dog park, and she believes that if she can inform them, their opinions will change. Bencharski currently has about six to eight people who are on board with the project and trying to figure out how to make a dog park in Rockyford a reality. Dog owners are very happy people. We love our animals like we love our family. Influenza. Its a nasty word that no one likes to hear and a condition no one wants to deal with from. Yet the percentage of children getting their free annual flu shot is lower than expected despite the fact that it has been free for Albertans since 2009. Candace Lind, RN, PhD with the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary and Dr. Margaret Russell a researcher and physician at the University of Calgarys Institute for Public Health have launched a research project to find out how we can see more children getting their vaccine. By vaccinating your children youre not only protecting them, youre also helping stop the spreading of the flu to family, and community members. Were investigating and figuring out an efficient way to vaccinate children against influenza and thinking about if our rates are still low for flu vaccine in children how might we actually have something thats more acceptable. How can we build a more acceptable flu vaccination program for children, said Lind. One thing were looking at is how feasible would it be to vaccinate children at school. There are already vaccinations in schools, hepatitis B, tetanus and those sorts of things and they have good vaccination rates for those. So were looking at how feasible would it be to actually bring school vaccinations for (the) flu into schools. There are a few different groups they will be talking to but Lind said this particular research project is to
get parents perspectives, opinions and input on how to build an acceptable flu vaccination program in their childrens schools. Lind said parents are rarely asked for their opinions when it comes to projects such as this. An efficient way to vaccinate children against influenza is to vaccinate them at school but this is not currently done. Children already receive some vaccinations at school so adding a yearly flu shot could be an option for public health to consider if parents are interested, said Russell in a press release. Parents are the people who decide if, and where, their children should be vaccinated. It is essential to consider the needs and perspectives of parents if school based flu vaccination programs are to be designed and carried out in the future. Lind said the goal is to target both the urban and rural parents in order to get a wide range of information. Focus groups will be used to gather the information for the study. They will take one to two hours to complete, and will be held in a location close to the parents community. Were not expecting people to drive into Calgary to do a focus group. When we have enough parents in a certain area then we will come out to them, said Lind. Parents interested in participating in the focus group can either call 403220-2695 or email sbiv@ucalgary.ca. There is a bit of a screening process said Lind, and once thats complete a focus group is planned based on the parents availability, what community they are in, and how many people are interested.

Evangelism and faithfulness in the world today

Manny EvErEtt Times Contributor The Seventh Day Adventist Church has been planting a mission congregation in the Town of Strathmore and is currently holding services at Lord of All Lutheran Church building. This past weekend Pastor Ghena Girleanu welcomed Evangelist Don Corkum to four days of seminar services for members in the area and everyone was welcome to the open sessions. Corkum (originally from the US) has retired in Calgary and helps out in the development of mission congregations with pastors in the area, and does this on a part-time basis. His seminar services were based on five experiences in believing in Jesus. 1) know Him in life eternal; 2) Know the true God; 3) We will experience the resurrection power; 4) What does it mean personally to experience His sufferings, being faithful in a hostile world; and finally 5) What does it mean to love His appearing. The seminar services were well received by a small group and they look forward to continuing their evangelism in Strathmore and area in the coming
months. The Seventh Day Adventist organization, in a nutshell, is comprised of individuals who follow the mandate of the following basis of faith in God on the revelation of His character by His Son, Jesus, as shown in the Bible, the inspired Word of God. Their faith is placing complete trust in God and accepting His offer of salvation. The Gospel is the heart of their message as being Gods good news of salvation and Jesus death on the cross which provides Gods free gift of eternal life to all those who accept and follow Him. The Sabbath is the seventh-day Sabbath (Saturday) and all are invited to come together to worship God, our Creator and Saviour. And finally there is The Second Advent. Although they do not set a date for this event they do look forward to the glorious return of Jesus Christ as He promised He would. Pumpkin Patch Giveaway in Langdon

On October 20 the fourth annual Pumpkin Patch Giveaway was held at the ice rink in Langdon. For a donation of a toonie, families could wander through the pumpkin patch and select up to two pumpkins to take home. Jill Beaton of Langdon sponsors the event and all proceeds are donated to the Southeast Rocky View Food Bank. Due to the increasing popularity of this event over the four years, the number of pumpkins has risen from 200 to a little over 400. The pumpkins are purchased from Superstore the night before and put out at the rink on the morning of the event. This year they collected $1,235.00 for the food bank bringing their four-year total to over $3,000.

Wildrose Party holds information meetings about proposed power lines

Manny EvErEtt Times Contributor A sizeable crowd gathered to hear Wildrose MLA and Utilities Critic Joe Anglin present the concerns that Constituents have in Strathmore and area with regards to the proposed power lines running from Strathmore north to the Edmonton area. Anglin has partnered with MLA for Strathmore-Brooks Jason Hale and Chestermeres MLA Bruce McAllister to speak on the negative impact new transmission lines and rising power bills are having on hardworking Alberta families in Strathmore and area. Anglin was elected to his MLA position on April 23 and was appointed to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts on May 24, and the Standing Committee on Resource Stewardship on May 28. Anglin has an extensive background in the field of electricity and business as he worked as a lineman for a public electric utility before going to work for AT&T, the worlds largest corporation. An active member of his community, Anglin successfully organized and led the Lavesta Area Group (an association of southern Alberta landowners opposed to the construction of a 500KV electricity transmission line through their area, from 2006-2010. Right now Albertans are paying among the highest power bills in the country and with the complete mismanagement by this PC government these past few years, prices are only going up, Anglin said Concerned landowners and tax payers are upset with the proposed line as it has not been determined that this is

the answer to Albertas utility concerns. Landowners are feeling the pinch and the property rights advocate has no power and can do nothing for them. Anglin, who jokingly claims he is not part of the Party official opposition but rather a part of the Government in waiting with the Wildrose says that Albertans have a right to compensation. While Alberta used to be the most efficient and cost effective area ranking in the top 3 in North America, we are now at the bottom. The average Albertans electricity bills have doubled and in some cases tripled over the last 2 years. The proposed line that would run from Genoese to Langdon will cost just about 2 billion dollars and will have a huge capacity but it is not economical, says Anglin. Even if it is built it really cannot be utilized without a second line being in service (running North and South of the AB/SK border). Then it would be considered to be a huge waste of money on the part of Albertans that would have 2 (super highway) inefficient lines in Alberta. Youth Club set to begin fall programming

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter The Youth Club of Strathmore is going into its fourth year and is offering more programs than ever to the community. The ever-popular chef program is returning, this time with themes for each session. The snack program just ended, but the baking-themed program begins Nov. 13 for kids ages 6-8 and Nov. 14 for the 9-12-year-olds. It takes the stress out of teaching your child at home. Usually the most frequent opportunity for a child and parent to cook together is at dinner, which can be quite rushed and stressful, as the child wants to help the parent prepare the meal. Our program has the children learning the same skills in a fun group environment, where everyone works together to create the edible result, said Colina Clark, program coordinator for the Youth Club of Strathmore. As a spinoff of the Chef program the Youth Club is now offering a Create A Cook program for kid ages 13 to 17. In addition to teaching the kids how to cook, it also teaches them budgeting, meal planning, shopping and nutritional best practices. A senior leadership is being offered as a continuation of the junior leadership program. For now the two groups will be blended and once the demand increases they will be split into two different groups. After the Bell is another new program being offered. It is a homework program that offers homework assistance, snacks and a recreational activity. Its currently offered thru pre-registration, Monday to Friday from 3 until 6pm, said Clark. Fantabulous Fridays offers a themed afternoon with a recreational activity on non-school day Fridays for Golden Hills School Division students. The Essential Edibles program is also new. That is our hot lunch program for the local junior and senior high students. We operate on a Tuesday and a Thursday. Our lunch is for sale and we actually also have a voucher system in place through school administration for those who are unable to afford lunch, said Clark. School administration has the vouchers and will determine the students who are in need of them. We are very fortunate to have Tinas No Frills being our main sponsor. She is fantastic and she has been a great support, shes the backbone basically of a lot of our programs, were very fortunate to have her, said Clark. Luckily with the amount of businesses that we have here that theres other opportunities for other sponsors and community organizations to join in. On Oct. 26 the Youth Club will be hosting a Fright Night dance for youth ages 12 to 17 from 7 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. at the Youth Club centre. Promoting awareness about family violence

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter November, Prevention of Family Violence month, is only a week away which means the Community Crisis Society annual dinner and auction is coming up fast. The 18th annual dinner and auction fundraiser takes place on Nov. 3 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Civic Centre. The theme this year is Join us on our journey to end domestic violence. The evening will be travel themed to align with everyone taking a journey together said Executive Director Karen Pease. New this year is the introduction of the shopping list. Some of the feedback we got from people who have attended our auction is that they wanted an alternative to support our shelter in a way that was tangible. In a way that we could use it towards operations and good idea to what we needed that for, so we created a shopping list based on that request, said Pease. The Crisis Society is not fully funded and relies on community support for things like operations and food, and equipment for the building, which is just one reason why there is an annual gala. The support goes a long way to enabling us to offer the programs and service that we do to our residents that come in. Weve had an increase in the usage of the shelter and weve also had, of course, inflation hit us. We have to make up those shortfalls in funding and the way we do it is part of it is the gala and part of it is relying on donations, said Pease. She said it is incredible the continued support the shelter has had from different businesses, and the community over the years. Pease said the issue of family violence is starting to come out of the shadows and people are being made more aware of what family violence really is. She and the staff at the Community Crisis Society would love to see every month dedicated to creating awareness to family violence of course, but are happy that the province has proclaimed November as Prevention of Family Violence month. The Society works with the whole family, from children to men who have been charged with abuse and are looking changing their abusive ways. Pease said they are looking at ways of offering it into the Strathmore area. Bridal Show returns to Strathmore

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Planning a wedding can be stressful. Where do you go for flowers, your cake, what about your photographer and your dress? It can be a stressful, frazzling time but one that is made a little easier by bridal expos. Expos make it basically a one stop shop to either find what you are looking for, or to find ideas you hadnt even thought about. Thats just one reason why Event-full Elements is hosting Strathmores second annual Bridal Expo on Nov. 3. This will be the first time the wedding and event-planning company has hosted the event. Its really coming together, it took a little longer then what we had anticipated. We wanted to go for a bigger show this year, more of an expo style and really drive in traffic to create an event that would be a very large event, bring in business, bring in the knowledge and just let people know how many industry people there are in this area, said Junella Weiss, owner of Event-full Elements. The expo itself is at both Trinity school and Westmount Elementary School. The fashion show is at the Strathmore Travelodge followed by a red carpet event at 4:30 p.m. Then there will be a dinner awards gala, also held at the Travelodge, with a concert by Drew Gregory. Brett. W. Wilson will be walking the runway at 3 p.m. and then will be walking the red carpet with all the VIP guests at 4:30 p.m. There will be a kids zone, and a grooms lounge with a big screen TV. Brenda Stuart-Berry from Sew Delicious is running her dresses at the first set from 1-2 p.m. and then Event-full Elements will be running their fashion show from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The bridal show is the same evening as the Crisis Society Gala, something Weiss and her fellow organizers hadnt knon. What they plan to do is donate the money from the expo entrance ticket sales to the womens shelter. We want to support them. Its $10 to pre-purchase and $15 day of. For the Drew Gregorys concert we are partnering up with Project Hope so the proceeds from the dinner gala awards go to Project Hope, said Weiss. She said they wanted to show their support to both organizations. Weiss has worked with Project Hope in the past, helping plan their events at the Travelodge, and she said the womens shelter is also a dear cause to her. A good samaritan in Strathmore

aShad MukadaM Times Contributor A man from British Columbia is grateful towards a good samaritan in Strathmore this week. At 5 p.m. on Oct. 17, Mr. Wesley Oesch, a local Strathmore resident, returned a wallet owned by a BC man to Strathmore RCMP. The wallet had been lost in the parking lot at the local Coop. The wallet contained a great deal of personal identification documents plus $860 in cash. Mr. Oesch returned the wallet soon after he found it, said Strathmore RCMP Const. Clarence Jackson. He attempted to look for the owner, and then soon after came straight to the RCMP office to return it. The wallet was found in the cardlock of the parking lot near tires by a semitruck. He went into the restaurant and asked some of the patrons there if they knew who and where the owner of the wallet was before going to the RCMP. I phoned his BC number soon after the wallet was turned in, and about a couple of hours after that the owner phoned to claim it, said Const. Jackson. Const. Jackson said he was very surprised about the contents that were inside the wallet. I was quite surprised because when someone turns in a wallet (with cash in it), it is usually a small amount like twenty or forty dollars, said Const. Jackson. $860 is a sizable amount, and we usually do not see that. Const. Jackson also had good things to say about Mr. Oesch and his honesty. I was very impressed with his demeanour, and he did not want a reward, he said. He said that that was just his nature, and that he was willing to have us give his name (to the owner). Const. Jackson also said that the owner was very happy that his property was returned to him. It is not known at this time if the owner has contacted Mr. Oesch.

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Pat Dale-Dunderdale began life in London, England on May 20, 1948. It was there that she met Peter, the love of her life, who became her partner for 50 years and her husband for over 40 of them. Together they raised three children - Eddie, Joe and Jim. The Dunderdales have always been a fun-loving bunch, owning numerous pubs in England before coming to Canada. On the morning of Oct. 18 Pat passed quietly in her home. She had been a 10year member of the Legion, a mother, grandmother and staple of the community. What a shocker it was to hear of Pats death. She was a very kind lady. She was a 10-year member of our branch, and always volunteered to lend a hand. She always said she couldnt do much of the legwork, but, give me something I can give a hand with in regards to

The UFA Bisons unveiled their third jersey during their Oct. 21 game versus the United Cycle Maple Leafs. On hand for the ceremonial puck drop were jersey sponsor Derek Polsfut, President of Techmation Electric & Controls, and jersey designer Mitchell Hardy. Over 30 submission were entered in the contest before Hardys design was selected. At centre ice for the puck drop were UFA Bisons forward Markson Bechtold (l-r), Polsfut, Hardy and Maple Leafs captain Joel Webb.

Bisons rebound after home opener

Mario Prusina Times Editor After a disastrous home opener against the lowly Fort Saskatchewan Rangers, the UFA Bisons responded with their most complete hockey game of the season. The local triple-A midget team hammered the United Cycle Maple Leafs 7-2 on Oct. 21 at the Strathmore Family Centre, avenging the 5-3 embarrassment to the Rangers the night before. Thats obviously more of the team we want to see, said Bisons head coach Jeremy Friesen after the win. We challenged the guys to take care of stuff defensively and get on the right side of the puck, win your one-on-one battles, compete and bear down on the execution. Today was a much better performance all-round. They were no passengers we had 19 guys that were going all game long. You could just feel it on the bench in terms of momentum and chatter. The guys were having fun and they were enjoying it. Hopefully this is a turning point for us. Weve taken enough steps backwards so far this year, hopefully this is kind of the righting of the ship and we can build off of this and start improving in other area (of our game). Friesen was particularly proud of the two goals against, which was the lowest amount the team has allowed all season. After some shaky goaltending in the first half-dozen games, the Bisons received the netminding they expect game in, game out. That feels pretty nice I thought James (Fisk) responded really well today, said Friesen. He made the saves we needed and his rebound control was very good early on and you could feel that on the bench and the guys were more relaxed. Its one game, so we were not going to get too excited or too ahead of ourselves, but I think we got a taste of what we are capable of when we all buy in. After starting the season with a six-game road trip, the Bisons finally got a taste of home ice against the Rangers. Despite controlling the play and outshooting

Weve talked about it so often, Im not going to beat a dead horse everyone who was at the rink knows exactly what happened, described Friesen of the forgettable home opener. Its very disappointing for the guys, for us, for everybody. Again, when you outshoot a team as bad as you do, you expect to win. Having said that, our execution and our discipline wasnt very good. It goes to show that when you do get the performance in the pipes youre looking for, (youll be successful). Despite their 3-5-0 record, the Bisons are scoring goals with the best of them. The team has tallied 36 goals in eight games something that will benefit them when they finally solve their defensive woes. According to hardworking forward Connor Tudor, the Bisons are trending in the right direction. We have a lot of heart on the team, a lot of character, said Tudor. Its good group of guys (in the room). We got four strong lines and we have defence that can put the puck in the net too. Were more concerned about sticking tight in our own end because we know the goals will come. The Bisons will now have a major task on their hands when they hit the road against the league-leading Red Deer Chiefs, who boast an impressive 6-0-1 mark, and the upstart Lethbridge Pronghorns. The Bisons will tangle with the Chiefs Oct. 26 (8 p.m.) before taking on Lethbridge Oct. 28 (2:30 p.m.). The club will return home Nov. 3 (5:30 p.m.) when they face the Southeast Tigers, before hosting the Calgary Royals the following day (2 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre.

The Senior team played in Brooks Oct. 16 in round one of the Rangeland League playoffs. On arrival to Brooks, the Senior team had 24 of the 33 players on the roster dressed, with over 50 per cent being rookies. Unfortunately the scoreboard at the end of the game stated Brooks 29 Strathmore 6, but it was a huge improvement from the same scoreboard early in September. The Spartans D kept the Buffalos at bay throughout the second half and did not let them see the red zone. The Spartan scoring was gained on a string of inside running plays which carried the Spartans down the field to the five and was finished off with a five yard pass to Kenny Lemay from Cory Campbell. The Spartans O were executing and stringing some good series together, threatening again utilizing the air game when the clock ran out. The Spartans played a good game, having three Brooks TDs scored off three plays which should have/ could have been handled easily. This closes off the Senior Spartans season, a little early to be done, exhibition game possibilities are being investigated.

The Wheatland Braves are one step closer to showing they are the elite team in the South Central Alberta Hockey League peewee division. The high-octane double-A team improved to 8-0 on the season, after defeating the Red Deer TBS 11-4 on Oct. 19 and the previously unbeaten Lethbridge Giants 2-0 Oct. 21 at the Strathmore Family Centre. Entering the weekend, the Braves and Giants were two of four unbeaten teams, which also included the Bow Valley Timberwolves and the Okotoks Oilers. After earning wins against some weaker opponents, the Braves responded with a gutty victory over a quality opponent. That was a good team we beat (on Sunday), said Braves head coach Keith Klemmensen. Theyre a well-coached team and probably the hardest-working team weve played against this year, I think. That was an excellent measuring stick, but there are two (other elite) teams and well see how that goes down the line. Ill tell you what, we both went into that game 7-0 and I think anybody could see that both teams had the ability to work hard were a little older team and a little bigger team and we just had a little more finish (on that given day). Despite being one of three unbeaten teams, Klemmensen emphasizes that are a number of things the Braves need to work on in order to be successful. We need to learn to play within our system, with more consistency and trust each other a little more, said the coach. I see signs that were trying to do things by ourselves more often than I would like. Im more concerned that we play 60 minutes of good, solid Braves hockey which means theyre using the whole rink and were making the (opposition) earn their opportunities by coming 200 feet (down the rink). I think when we do that, well be successful. The Braves are now gearing up to host the Red Deer Parkland Oct. 27 (6 p.m.)

Bantam A returns from first road game

The Bantam A team took to the road for the first time this weekend, with a full roster and just a few practices under their belt. They were in Cochrane on Saturday and Okotoks on Sunday. Playing as a team for the first time they laid it all on the ice and left with smiles and pats on the back for their efforts. even though they came home a few goals short, the boys are pumped and ready to greet medicine Hat (2:30 pm, Strathmore Family Center) and Chestermere (12:15 pm, Hussar) this weekend on home ice. Come out and support your local Bantam A team.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gary, our loving son, brother and uncle, at the Strathmore Hospital on October 14th. Gary is survived by his parents Stuart and Elaine. Brothers Daryl and Jeff and Sisters Charlene Cindy and Michele and numerous other loving family members. Gary had a kind heart and a wonderful soul. He will be missed dearly. Special thanks to all hospital and homecare staff that have cared for Gary over the years.

Kings learn valuable lesson

Mario Prusina Times Editor Despite losing both games this weekend, the coaching staff of the Wheatland Kings are happy with the way their team competed against a pair of elite teams. The local junior B team suffered a 3-2 home loss on Oct. 20, before being ousted by the top team in the league, losing 5-4 to the Blackfalds Wranglers the following day. It was actually, all-in-all a good weekend, said Kings head coach Doug Murphy. Medicine Hat was one of those frustrating games we had 46 shots and only scored two goals. Their goalie seems to have our number. I dont know what it is, but hes a puck magnet. From that viewpoint, it certainly tells us we can play with and beat these guys. The next day against Blackfalds, the Kings battled back and forth with the Wranglers, giving up the game-winning goal with under two minutes remaining. Blackfalds is clearly the best team in the league its not even close with any of the other teams weve come up against, said the coach. The guys played really well and (goaltender) Richie Hubbell was absolutely spectacular without question the best game he has ever played for us. He had something stupid like 66 shots against and only gave up five, including three while we were shorthanded. He was absolutely lights-out. According to Murphy, the Kings learned a valuable lesson over the weekend. Despite entering the weekend in second place in the South Division, the team found themselves in fourth place when it was all said and done with a 5-4-1 record. He added that the Kings need to tighten up in the defensive end and limit the shots against. There is no question about that, laughed Murphy. We definitely have the offence and we certainly have the goaltending, but our defence still needs some work. But right now, we have three of our regular d-men out with injuries, so were (hurting). The Kings will look to get back to their winning ways this weekend when they travel to Stettler on Oct. 26, before returning home to host Three Hills the following day at 8 p.m. at the Strathmore Family Centre.
