Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Scripture The Lord has delivered his people, (Jeremiah 31:8) Those who sow in tears will reap with cries of joy. (Psalm 126:5) You are my son: this day I have begotten you; (Hebrews 5:5) He threw aside his cloak, sprang up and came to Jesus. (Mark 10:50) Jesus told him, Go your way your faith has saved you. Immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way. (Mark 10:52) Reflection What hope is there for a blind beggar who relies only on himself? Or one who resigns his only hope to be faith in Jesus? How committed is Bartimaeus to receive a cure from Jesus? What does he do with his cure? What afflicts you and keeps you from believing completely in Jesus? If Jesus healed all your afflictions today, what could you do? And once he heard and understood the Word of God, he tried to put it into practice in his own life. For him the Word was life and not to live it was to deprive himself of really living. That was what the dream was really about in his own mind: to dare to live radically and simply, to take a chance on Christ. And what caused inestimable joy in Francis and his brothers was that the Gospel worked. If you tried to live it without reservation, you suddenly experienced a whole new worldview and you felt as though you had never lived before. 1

St. Michaels Book of the Dead

Praying for the dead is a Christian obligation. In the modern world, when many have come to doubt the Church's teaching on Purgatory, the need for such prayers has only increased. The Church devotes the month of November to prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, and participation in the Mass of All Souls Day is a good way to begin the month. The Book of the Dead will be at the main entrance of the chapel beginning November 1st. Please enter the names of your beloved dead. We will lift them in prayer at each mass.

Military Council of Catholic Women (MCCW)

MCCW Monthly meeting will be on November 2nd at 6pm at our chapel. The program will be on the Saints. We will have Mass, Rosary, social and a presentation on the the Saints by Tilly Mendieta. MCCW at Fort Gordon offers FAITH STUDY on Monday mornings from 9:30 - 11:00am followed by daily Mass for those who can attend. This year we are studying Catholicism by Fr. Robert Barron. Fr. Robert Barron created the groundbreaking CATHOLICISM ADULT STUDY PROGRAM as a thematic presentation of what Catholics believe and why, so all adults can come to a deeper understanding of the Catholic Faith. This engaging and interesting formational program uses the art, architecture, literature, music and all the treasures of the Catholic tradition to illuminate the timeless teachings of the Church. The Posada is coming to our Parish!! November 30 December 7, 14, and 21 @ 6PM Good Shepherd Chapel
The Posada is a traditional Christmas celebration that Franciscan missionaries developed in America with the goal of introducing the faith. It continues to be popular throughout the southwestern United States and all of Latin America and is a rich tradition for Knights and their families to share. The Christmas Posada expresses perfectly the suspense and surprises of the season. It is a prayer, a play, a party and a gathering for families, parishes and whole communities. It is a celebration that children and adults can enjoy together, as well as those from all different cultural backgrounds. Even if you are not familiar with the Christmas Posada, the Knights of Columbus invites you to join this ancient observance that will open for you the deeper meaning of a joyful season on Fridays beginning on November 30th at our Chapel. Food and refreshments will be provided by the parish. We ask you to sign up for this activity at the fellowship room. Join us and be witness of this great celebration!

Pastoral Visitations
There is simply no place more appropriate than the home for pastors to interact with their parishioners in a personal manner. And this holds true whether such interaction is for the purpose of leading a person to Christ, reclaiming a lost soul, or offering support and guidance. For this reason, our Pastor, Father Joseph would like to start Pastoral Visitations to give parishioners the opportunity of meeting and knowing him. Confessions
Private confessions at St. Michaels are available for you before Mass on Saturdays 4pm and Sundays at 8am in the confessional box located in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, but also face-to-face and by appointment at your convenience. Confessions are available in Spanish when Father Joseph celebrates mass.

Matrimony
Arrangements for marriage preparation should be made at least six months in advance of the proposed date. If there has been a prior marriage that has not been annulled by the Catholic Church, more time may be required. Participation in a marriage preparation workshop/program is required. Initially, all requests of information should be directed to the Catholic Pastor at (267) 243-5861.

Baptism
In order to receive Baptism, parent(s) must be registered and attending Mass. Dates and times of Baptism can ONLY be set after registering for Pre-Baptism class, and talking with a Priest. Adoration on Wednesday
Join us for adoration this coming Wednesday at 6:30pm. We meet every week to spend and dedicate an hour in Eucharistic Adoration. This is a great way to increase your faith and help you with your prayer life.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

VOLUNTEERS COORDINATOR (volunteer position)

St. Michaels Parish at Fort Gordon is looking for a dedicated, hardworking person, sensitive to the ways God calls and equips people for mission in daily life, to help the members of our congregation grow in both spirituality and in participation. Positive communication skills, including both quality listening skills and comfort with cold-calling, are a necessity! Ability to maintain open and often communication with parish volunteers. Duties will include, but are not limited to: - Establish and maintain relationships with congregation members and community organizations to assist the congregation in accomplishing its missional responsibilities. - Create and maintain databases of congregational member information such as skills and interests. Such databases may include some or all software such as Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Publisher. - Establish and oversee recruitment procedures to meet specific group needs for activities and functions of volunteers. - Evaluate the work of volunteers to ensure that work is of appropriate quality and that resources are used effectively. - Assist in the assimilation process of new members. Work with the Parish Life Coordinator to acknowledge, recognize, and support volunteers as well as recommend new directions for ministry. - Help connect members with existing ministries and programs within the congregation. - Report questions, comments, or concerns regularly to the Parish Life Coordinator. - Other duties as assigned by the Pastor and/or Parish Life Coordinator or as deemed necessary. Care Ministry Coordinator

We are looking for a volunteer to coordinate the Care Ministry. This ministry assists parishioners who are sick at home or hospital. The ministry coordinator is responsible for coordinating visits in consultation with the senior pastor and PLC. The coordinator will be willing to visit parishioners who request this assistance, share the Word of God and prayer with them, and offer Holy Communion at the time of visit. The Sheep and the Goats Parables of Jesus. Written by Pete Miller
The message Jesus taught in Matthew 25:31-46 is sometimes characterized as a parable, although, unlike most parables, it does not relate a story of events happening to other characters. In this discourse, Jesus associated the final judgment with separating sheep and goats. This separation was something familiar to the people who were listening, because they lived in an agricultural environment. It doesnt mean that people are of the same worth as animals, or that goats are actually cursed creatures. The comparison likely was used only to get the peoples attention. Jesus emphasis was on something far more important what they were doing with their lives. When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Jesus spoke of Himself in a future tense, the King of Kings and Lord of lords, the Judge of all humanity. Paul taught, He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordainedthe Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom. (Acts 17:31; 2 Timothy 4:1) In Matthew 25:34-40, Jesus separated based on works. Then the King will say to those on His right hand, Come, you blessed of My Father for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me. Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, Lord, when? And the King will answer and say to them, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me. It must be noted that Jesus was teaching Israelites under the Law, not Christians, because the church didnt exist yet. Jesus was teaching works because that was still the criterion for righteousness. Then it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to observe all these commandments before the Lord our God, as He has commanded us. (Deuteronomy 6:25) Then He will also say to those on the left hand, Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels This group represents those who did not obey the Law, for example, in Leviticus 19:15-18: You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty. In righteousness you shall judge your neighbor. You shall not hate your brother in your heart but you shall love your neighbor as yourself Jesus taught that these people had condemned themselves by their failure to do the kinds of humanitarian acts that the obedient people had done, saying, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me. And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. It wasnt as if they had no warning. Besides the Law, which was taught in the synagogues regularly during Jesus time, Solomon had written in Ecclesiastes 12:14 For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil. Even earlier in Jesus ministry, He had taught this. For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works. (Matthew 16:27) Revelation 20:11-15 corroborates this. Similar to the parable of the tares and wheat, and others, like the parable of the wedding banquet, and the ten virgins, Jesus was trying to wake people up to the reality that life is short and death is certain, and what one does in the here and now determines ones eternity. This is still true in essence for the Christian, although righteousness is imputed by faith in Jesus Christ, not works. God has made available salvation by grace since Pentecost, but hand in hand with that gift of salvation is a tailor-made destiny complete with a challenging but satisfying job description including good works. By Joseph McAleer Catholic News Service NEW YORK (CNS) -- Perseverance pays off big time in "Here Comes the Boom" (Columbia), the unlikely yet inspiring tale of an ordinary man who goes to extraordinary lengths to help others. Directed by Frank Coraci and starring Catholic actor Kevin James -- who also co-wrote the screenplay with Allan Loeb -- "Here Comes the Boom" is that Hollywood rarity, a film which extols Christian virtue. In this case the quality being showcased is self-sacrifice as James' character displays the altruism needed to turn around a failing public school. Scott Voss (James) is a washed-up biology teacher at fictional Wilkinson High School in Boston. A decade ago he was "Teacher of the Year"; today, he's uninterested and bored -more baby-sitter than educator. The wicked Principal Betcher (Greg Germann) runs Wilkinson like a business, cutting salaries and activities at will. Scott can't even get the girl; Bella (Salma Hayek), the aptly named school nurse, repeatedly turns down his requests for a date. What rouses Scott from his personal and professional slumber is the beautiful music being made in the classroom next door by his colleague Marty Streb (Henry Winkler) and Marty's student orchestra. Marty's zest for teaching -- and life in general -- stirs something in Scott. So when Principal Betcher announces that the music program is to be eliminated -- along with Marty's job -Scott rises to the occasion, pledging to raise the $48,000 necessary to keep the activity in place. At first, Scott tries to raise the funds by conventional means, moonlighting as a tutor for immigrants seeking to become U.S. citizens. One of his students, Niko (Bas Rutten), is a former mixed martial arts fighter (as is Rutten in real life). There's big money to be had by entering the cage, Scott discovers, and taking on the sport which combines boxing, kickboxing, karate, judo and wrestling. A one-time college wrestler, Scott decides to channel his inner "Rocky" and become a cage fighter. Despite being beaten to a pulp in each bout, Scott inspires his students and coworkers -- especially Bella, who tenderly patches up his wounds. A crucifix hangs above Scott's bed. He gathers his support team together in prayer before the big fight. And around the dinner table, his fellow fighters discuss the Bible, admiring Jacob's all-night wrestling match with the angel as recounted in Chapter 32 of the Book of Genesis. Jacob lost that battle -- but ultimately won out through faith in God and submission to his will. The film contains realistic martial arts sequences, a brief scene of gross-out humor and one instance of crass language. The Catholic News Service classification is A-II -- adults and adolescents.
