Editorial by David Miller Misinformation and Innuendo Revisited

Feather River Recreation & Park District (FRRPD) Board of Director candidate Karen Whitlow was recently taken to task by former Federal Penitentiary inmate John Loewe (serving a five & three year concurrent sentence in prison for Grand Theft, Conspiracy and Forgery in the 1980s) current owner and publisher of the Oroville Mirror, for stating some facts about the conditions under which the district purchased the gymnastics building. Mr. Loewe took exception in his Misinformation and Innuendo editorial to Ms. Whitlows contention that the price paid for the gymnastics building was excessive and could readily have been purchased at a considerably lower price. What Ms. Whitlow pointed out was that the previous owner of the center, Marcia Carter, was deeply in debt. Back taxes of $174,663 were owed to the County of Butte. No payment on the $789,157 loan from the City of Oroville had been made for 2-1/2 years. Mr. Loewe contends that the building and property had been appraised at between $4 and $5 million, which it had been in February and November of 2007, at the height of the real estate market. Three years later, following the contraction of the market, the Private Industry Council (PIC) offered to purchase the building and property for $2.5 million with the intention of then leasing the facility to FRRPD. That offer was rescinded, however, when it was determined that the operating cost would be prohibitive. Both FRRPD and the YMCA had an interest in the facility and discussions were ongoing about the feasibility of the two sharing the facility and the operating costs. A meeting of PIC, the YMCA and FRRPD was held to continue, how might we do this discussions. John Buck, then General Manager of FRRPD, attended and terminated the meeting by making the surprising announcement that, FRRPD has made an offer to purchase the facility and equipment for $3.5 million. It seems reasonable that Ms. Whitlow would be correct in believing that $3.5 million was an excessive amount when the only other offer to purchase the facility came in at $2.5 million and the feasibility of paying that price was still being studied by the interested parties. Her thinking is especially understandable, when it may have been possible and mutually beneficial to share the operating costs of the facility between the two nonprofit organizations. Mr. Loewe goes on in his Oroville Mirror editorial to claim that the blame somehow lies with Robert Sharkey, a man who prior to John Buck was general manager of FRRPD. But at the time, Mr. Sharkey was neither on the Board, nor the general manager. Mr. Loewe states in his editorial, It is not that the District made a bad deal on a building. Again, hes mistaken. When you pay a $1 million in excess on a $3.5 million deal, it is, a bad deal on a building. It is Mr. Loewe who has a documented history of Misinformation and Innuendo.

Butte County Library Celebrates 100 Years of Service to the Community

The Butte County Library is proud to announce that it will be celebrating 100 years of service to the community in the year ahead. In November, 1912, the Butte County Library opened its doors to the public for the first time, and the centennial celebration will kick-off this November in honor of that date. The Oroville Community Band will officially launch the centennial with a live performance inside the Oroville Library at 1820 Mitchell Avenue on Thursday, November 8 at 7pm, after library hours. Oroville Library branch manager, Brenda Crotts, will speak about the library, in addition to others with unique memories to share. The community is invited to this free event, which will begin a year of celebrations at all six Butte County branch libraries. In anticipation of the centennial of service, Butte County Librarys staff has been sorting through archives and photos in order to share these discoveries with patrons throughout the coming year. Images dating back to the beginning of the last century continue to amaze and inspire the team about how services were provided in the earliest years. In many instances, books were delivered by stagecoach to the mountain communities east of Oroville and around Paradise. Early branch libraries were housed in grocery stores, postal offices, and the living rooms of dedicated library supporters in nearly every community. Please join us as we reflect on a hundred years of access to information and ideas in Butte County. The Community Band performance will be the first time a full band has played in the Oroville Library, and also the first time the band has played outside of a traditional concert performance environment. Photo exhibits and timelines of events will be shared in libraries starting in 2013, in addition to other special events, and the public is invited to share their library memories, photos, and experiences with Library staff. For more information about services provided by the Butte County Library, visit us online at: www.buttecounty.net/ bclibrary.

James Garners Cash Tribute has a Special Beginning

ery Johnny Cash recording. Then there are the stories Garner recounts about Cashs life and career, inter-twined with his own anecdotes about Americas most beloved singing storyteller. I first heard James and his band at a winery in 2010 says John Zurflueh of Starbright Productions. I couldnt believe what I was hearing. I mean his voice is just absolutely incredible and the musicians were just perfect. Having been an avid Johnny Cash fan since the 60s, I knew right away this was a special group Zurflueh goes on. People need to know the difference between a band that covers several artists or groups vs. a band like James and his Cash Tribute. These guys are dedicated to the iconic music of Johnny Cash and it comes through big time in their performanceif ever there was anyone born to do anything, its James Garner singing and playing Cash songs, which explains why their audiences continue to grow. Believe me, you do not want to miss this Show. The Show will play at the Paradise Performing Arts Center on Sunday November 4th. The bar and doors open at 3PM with the two hour Show beginning at 4PM. $24 advance tickets in Paradise are at The Chamber of Commerce, Comeback Diner, Post Net, Paradise Senior Center and the Show Sponsor, Grocery Outlet. Also Jakis Caf in Magalia and The Music Connection & Diamond W Western Wear in Chico or online at www.starbrightshows.com For Groups of 20+ call 530 273-5486 $28 at the door.

clear braces invisalign treatments available over 30 years of continued care in the North Valley area quality treatment by orthodontic specialist

As a teenager, James Garner met Johnny Cash backstage after a show in northern California. James told Cash he could sing his songs. That was almost twenty years ago and Garner has been working on his Tribute to Johnny Cash ever since. I doubt that Cash was much interested in my remark, but after receiving a tape of his music, I was hooked says Garner, who lives in northern California. I began singing Cashs songs, playing his music and started the band in 2007. Equally important, is the band backing Garner with the signature Boom-Chicka-Boom sound of the Tennessee Three. Guitarists Denny Colleret and Rick Duncan, along with drummer Nick Auriemmo deliver the familiar clear and crisp sound found on ev-

CSU, Chicos School of the Arts to Stage Production of The Arabian Nights, November 6-11 in Wismer Theatre
CSU, Chicos School of the Arts will bring to life the magical world of The Arabian Nights for its next theatre production. The Arabian Nights, directed by Department of Music and Theatre faculty member Katie Whitlock, will have performances November 6-10 at 7:30 p.m. and November 10 and 11 at 2 p.m. in Wismer Theatre, the Performing Arts Centers small, intimate black box theatre. Chico Sates production of The Arabian Nights was written by Tony Award-winning director Mary Zimmerman, considered in theatre circles as a pioneer in working with ensembles as well as adapting classic stories into theatrical form. Her most well-known work is Metamorphosis, which premiered in Chicago and then had a successful Broadway run, noted Whitlock. Most recently she worked in Ashland at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival staging the world premiere of her new work, The White Snake. Zimmermans adaptation of The Arabian Nights was initially performed in the shadow of the first Gulf War at the Lookingglass Theatre Company in Chicago in 1992. The play has been described by the New York Times as a celebration of the salutary powers of storytelling. The Arabian Nights weaves ancient tales of wonder into a poetic testament to the transformational power of storytelling. The play is built around the seductive narrative prowess of Scheherezade, the bride of the caliph Shahryar, who having been cuckolded by his first wife, now beds, and murders, a different virgin every night. Scheherezade, as readers of the book know, postpones her execution by telling the caliph intricate fables, stopping tantalizingly short of their conclusions just before dawn. She re-integrates him back into the real world through fiction, through story, said Whitlock. These classic tales of love, lust, hilarity and sorrow present the encyclopedia of human experience, imagination and poetry in the familiar and exotic realm of the book. Anyone with an interest in myth, culture, story, and human experience should find something of interest in The Arabian Nights, noted Whitlock. The play is by nature a journey for the viewer, and each person who joins us will hopefully find something funny, erotic, romantic, and enchanting. CSU, Chicos production will be ensemble based. The majority of the actors will be portraying several different characters. Leading the cast is Scheherezade, played by Theatre alumni Sepideh Burgiani (last seen onstage in the School of the Arts The Revengers Tragedy), and the caliph, Shahryar, played by Alexander Ritchey (last seen as the Woodcutter in Rashomon, also produced by the School of the Arts). Other familiar faces include Murphy Mayer (Vatzlov), Chelsea Haskell (Oklahoma!), Ernesto Rosales (Vatzlov), Krystal Elebiary (Anonymous), Nate Whitaker (Vatzlov), and Madison Kisst (The Revengers Tragedy). The full cast of 18 includes majors, minors, and non-majors and is a broad sample of the various skill levels and talents of students at CSU, Chico, said Whitlock, noting that the cast members seem to be adjusting well to the challenges of playing multiple characters. This show demands a level of movement and physicality, which is both challenging and exciting for our students, providing for a lively rehearsal process. Also the blend of humor and drama in this work is pushing students to play the limits of their range in terms of creating stories that are both clear and engaging for our audience. Chico States production of The Arabian Nights is set in the ancient Middle East and will include dancing, singing, improvisation, and traditional storytelling. Joining Whitlock in staging the production will be Department of Music and Theatre staff member Sandy Barton (costumes) and Theatre students McKenna Perry (set), Keith Bratton (lighting design), and Mikey Perdue (choreography). Whitlock has taken on the sound design to go along with her directing duties. This show is designed to be a world of mystery and play. The set and costumes are still being developed to best suit the ensemble nature of the show as actors move from place to place, character to character, with very little time between each. Our student designer is creating a set with a nod towards the classic image of a desert palace to take us from Egypt to Arabia to India in the blink of an eye. This is a world of sensuality and physicality so the costumes will nod to tradition while still serving to present our vision of this classic story. The Arabian Nights is a favorite of educational institutions, noted Whitlock, because it serves multiple educational purposes. This show serves several needs in terms of artistic and educational perspectives. The play is by a leading theatre artist of the 21st century and it calls for inventive, ensemblebased work, which is ideal for the collegiate environment. It also deals with the Middle East and different perspectives from our own, serving the idea of diversity. Not to mention it is a great piece of theatre that focuses on storytelling and theatre in relation to the human condition. Whitlock hopes audience members that make it to the production discover the world of The Arabian Nights with the same sense of wonder, humor, eroticism, and enchantment that mirrors Shahryars journey in the play. The Arabian Nights is written for audiences of most ages, although there is touch of eroticism in keeping with the original tales. Whitlock recommends a parental discretion rating as far as bringing children to the show and cautions that some of the historic favorites from the tales such as Aladdin, Sinbad, and Ali Baba are not included in this version. Advance tickets, at $15 adults, $13 senior citizens, and $6 students/children, are available at the University Box Office, 8986333; add $2 for tickets purchased at the door. For disability-related seating, please call 898-4325.

A New Leaf
Avenue 9 Gallerys exhibit A New Leaf, Nov. 2-Dec. l, features paintings by Candy Matthews and fine art jewelery by Mike and Susi Gil- Susi and Mike Gillum, "Leaf lum. This summer Pendant: Copper and Opal" the three artists were delighted to discover that their new work shared in common leaf motifs, and that they were all exploring both the visual beauty of leaves and their symbolic meanings. Matthews explains: The title A New Leaf represents the life cycle of leaves that drop in the Fall, enrich the earth, and are reborn every Spring--a cycle that gives me hope for personal renewal. Susi Gillum agrees: Our exhibit comes at the end of 2012, just at a time when many people will find inspiration in our New Leaf theme. Matthews says: For my watercolor subjects, I searched for leaves in different Chico neighborhoods. Ive given some paintings street titles, and some titles of the month in which I found the leaf. Every year I collect acorns with my grandsons in Bidwell Park, and so the oak leaf and acorn are for me symbols of our park. Mike and Susi began making jewelry while living with the Hoopa, Karuk and Yurok Native Americans in Northern California. Susi says: Our jewelry was in keeping with the hippy-style life we led then; we incorporated leather, seeds, beads, cones, pods and shells in our pieces. Now we use semi-precious and precious stones, silver, gold and copper. As an example, the New Leaf exhibit includes a leaf pendant made of copper with moonstones as raindrops, as well as handcut oak leaf rings of sterling silver. Visitors to the show will enjoy seeing leaves of our Chico City of Trees celebrated in both two and three-dimensional mediums. Avenue 9 Gallery, l80 E. 9th Avenue, Chico. Reg. Hrs. Enlightened Patronage: The Collector

Meetings with a Message! In our continuing quest to provide the community ample opportunity to participate in the art experience, we at ChiVAA are launching a program focusing on developing a system of enlightened patronage in Chico. The program this year consists of three panel discussions. The first of the series is The Collector (coming right up!); the second is The Business of Art (February 2013); and the third, The Artist (June). Today we are pleased to invite you to the inaugural event to be held Monday November 5 (yes, the day before the election!) and we would like to encourage you to invite one or two other individuals that you think would be interested in (or enlightened by!) our discussion. Our goal is to spread the word and the knowledge and the understanding of the importance of art to the health and strength of our community. November 5, James Kuiper, Chico State University Art Professor, will moderate a discussion that includes Idie Adams, Reed Applegate, Gwen Curatilo, and Monica McDaniel-Berg. They will be revealing to the audience what drives them in the collecting. Wow! But we expect that many others in the audience -- including you! -- will have much to say and contribute and we are salivating at the expectation of such rich fare. This first meeting November 5 will be held at 5 p.m. at Habitat Lab, 199 E. 13th Street (off Park Avenue in the SOPO neighborhood), right next to Chico Locker. And of course, well have the usual refreshments to satisfy other kinds of appetites. Please contact us at events@ chivaa.org or call 487-4553, if youd like more information.

Symphonic Wind Ensemble Marks 125th Chico State Anniversary with November 3rd Quasquicentennial Concert
CSU, Chico continues its year-long 125th anniversary celebration with the Symphonic Wind Ensembles fall semester concert, aptly titled Quasquicentennial, Saturday, November 3rd beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre. For Quasquicentennial, Chico States premier band ensemble will perform music from the past 125 years, noted Director/ Conductor Royce Tevis, Department of Music and Theatre faculty member. We thought it would be fun to perform music that coincided with Chico States quasquicentennial, or its 125th anniversary, said Tevis. The Wind Ensemble is the elite performance group of the Chico State band program. Members of the Wind Ensemble are highly select and multitalented musicians who are challenged to create music at the highest of artistic levels. The 48-member group is made up of musicians who play wind and percussion instruments, specifically trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, lowbrass instruments French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, etc. flute, snare drum, bass drum, cymbal, and timpani. Joining in the Quasquicentennial celebration will be special guest artists Rocky Winslow, trumpet, and Danielle Silviera, voice. Winslow, a Department of Music and Theatre faculty member, is described by Tevis as our trumpeter extraordinaire. He will be featured in Jean-Baptiste Arbans Italian folk tune, Carnival of Venice. Most people know Rocky as the director of the Jazz XPress, our jazz band, said Tevis. They dont know that before he got into jazz he was a classically trained trumpet player. The piece he will be performing is very challenging it has a lot of articulation and fast parts with lots of extreme variations. You know you have made it as a trumpet player when you can play this kind of work. Silviera, a Chico State voice student, will be featured (without microphone) in two opera arias. She definitely has the pipes for these works, noted Tevis. The audience will love her warm, rich voice. Also on tap will be Richard Wagners Huldigungsmarsch, a composition for band the composer did while he was in a self-imposed exile in Vienna to escape debts and a relationship gone sour. Wagner wrote this in homage to King Ludwig II, the 19-year old King of Bavaria before he went mad, said Tevis. He wanted Wagner to come back to live in Prussia so he got rid of all his debts and set him up in living quarters. He told him he would, Lift lifes menial burdens from your shoulders so that you will be able to unfurl the mighty pinions of your genius. In homage to Halloween, which occurs the Wednesday before the Quasquicentennial concert, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform Incantation and Dance by John Barnes Chance, a composition about incantations being uttered and spirits being released. When the music gets to the part where the spirits arrive, the band lets go with a little craziness especially the percussion section led by Michael Taylor playing various percussion instruments, noted Tevis. They are playing written music but it still sounds pretty chaotic. Another interesting work that will be performed is Scenes from Louvre, a work specifically written for an NBC IV special produced in 1964. The composer received an Emmy for the score, which features themes from the Renaissance-era. Musically it is an interesting dichotomy between music from the Renaissance period created with a modern sound, noted Tevis. Each section of the band is featured independently as well as together. Tevis said he and the musicians in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble are looking forward to presenting Quasquicentennial. It really represents the music from the different periods of time since our University started a representation of 125 years of music that would have been played by bands. Advance tickets, at $15 adults, $13 senior citizens, and $6 students/children, are available at the University Box Office, 898-6333; add $2 for tickets purchased at the door. For disability-related seating, please call 898-4325.

Street have started a new trendThe Last Friday of October. Thats right last Friday was an eventful time for everyone to see what new fashions had arrived in our town. This event included all the stores on Montgomery Street, including but not limited to The Red Fly, Rubys, and Special EFX Boutique. Coyote Clothing Store had their own special celebration and high fashion display, also. I hope they do it every Friday in November and right up until Christmas. The First Friday is always a surprise...music in the streets, decorated windows, a little cheer here and there, and a snack or two. FRSCA is a wonderful place for me to kick off my shoes on almost every Saturday from now until the end of the year. So long as the Farmers Market is around, you can bet FRSCA will help you keep your veggies cool, while you play Bingo or shop. A little bird told me they may even help out with your Christmas wrappings after Thanksgiving. I just got word from Luceddies Restaurant on Montgomery St. that the Pina Sisters will be entertaining during Thursday night dinner hours. Angelina has the voice of an Angel. Drop by and have dinner around 6 or 6:30, before you head to The Birdcage Theatre. Thursday nights are now discount nights at The Birdcage. Tickets are only $10 on Thursdays. Cost goes up to $15 on Friday and Saturday. Talking about entertainment if you are new in town, or have lived here a long time, I would love to hear from you and about the local stores you enjoy. If you are a business owner, I would like you to drop me a line and share your experience. With my editors approval, I just might get your information printed. My new E-Mail Address is: della.the.newcomer@gmail.com. I love Roxys Golden Poppy, on Montgomery Street. Her son xed me the greatest Salmon sandwich, when I dropped in the other day. Roxy told me, We are celebrating 4 years here. Do you remember when we rst met! Roxy, you bet I do. WOW! How time ies. YMCAs Comedy Night is scheduled for Friday, November 16th at the Southside Community Center. This is a fund raiser. I went last year to this event and had a great time. Tickets are only $25 per person, if you get them early, and they can be gotten from the YMCA. Call 533-9622. (You can use your credit card.) The price goes up to $30, if you wait to get them at the door. No, I didnt forget ... PETCO has opened for business. They are located in the Raleys shopping center, next to Marshalls. Their Grand Opening is scheduled for the rst week in November. Watch for more information in The Digger News. And, dont forget to read the classied section of this paper. Its always fun. Well folks, thats all for today. I am really running out of space. Drop me a line, if you have time. Take advantage of the good weather; it wont be around for long. Be sure to say, Hello, if you see me with the gold cap and my name spelled out...della

You know what I truly like about this time of year? I like cleaning out my closet of summer clothes, and unpacking my winter wear. I get to ooohh and ahhh over all the darling outts I purchased right here in Oroville. My closets arent spacious enough to handle four seasons at a time. The truth is I have a two season system, with daytime and nighttime attire. Thanks to all you awesome local merchants, I also have the best collection of gold purses, shoes, tops, bottoms, and almost anything else one can imagine appropriate for a Newcomer to wear in Oroville. Am I spoiled? You bet! I am also a natural-born Shop-A-holic! When I rst moved to Oroville I discovered the local retail motto: If we dont have it, well get it! Just tell us what you want or need. The town kept their promise, and I suddenly found myself acquiring a brand new wardrobe. Where did I go? Where can you go? My stylish wardrobe, kind of a mix and match came from What To Wear and Betty Jeans, both on Bird Street. Then there is Rubys, Red Fly, and Special EFX Boutique, all on Montgomery Street (across from the downtown municipal parking). Oh Oh, how can I forget that elegant newer high fashion store known as Coyote Clothing on Myers St. and Wylies Boutique, both located across from FRSCA (Feather River Senior Citizens Association). Each of the aforementioned stores are unique in their own right. Doesnt matter if I want high-fashion, casual wear, accessories or more, I still get a thrill out of checking out local privately owned stores. Once I got the knack of what to wear in Oroville, I discovered my 4-inch spike shoes were no longer appropriate. Thats when I found Nelson Footwear. Thanks to The Nelsons, I can walk and talk at the same time. (lol) And my feet dont hurt any more. Thats right I can walk the blocks from Municipal Parking lot up Myers, to Robinson, Bird, or High Streets. Then across any one of them to Huntoon Street, and more stores. Have you been to the Gently Used Thrift Shop on Huntoon? It used to be on Myers Street at Park. Now, with more room, Gently Used has expanded their inventory to include far more merchandise. (Men, women large and small, children, babies and a lot more.) Also on the corner of Montgomery & Huntoon, I notice an antique store is opening right there on the corner. Oh! I love to see new stores, new businesses opening in Oroville, whether its downtown or any part of town. I love hanging out in Historical Downtown Oroville. I love the friendly people, interesting stores, (jewelry, furniture, candy, game, kitchen, book stores, gently-used, spas and consignment stores.) Im crazy about the beauty shops, barber shops, personal care and tanning stores. I admit, I havent patronized the tattoo parlors, but understand many people do. In fact, tattoos are considered stylish today. My very favorite shopping day has been on the First Friday of most every month. Now I am informed there is going to be a different celebration in downtown Oroville. What? The business owners on Montgomery
