7 Days in Srilanka

What I witnessed in Srilanka with Shaykh Abu Muad Hussain ibn Mahmood al hateebi ()
17 - 23, Jumaada al-awal, 1433
(9 15, April 2012)

Abu 'abdirRahman Salman Fariz ibn Ja'far asSwadiq

{ }
(Al-Quran - 93:11)

Thus we decided to explain briefly about the Khair (goodness) we witnessed so that our fellow Salafi brothers would realize the importance of meeting Ulema, travelling to them and seeking ILM.

: (( ))
Narrated by Abu Hurayrah that Prophet
Sahih Muslim

said,

Whoever treads a path to seek ILM then Allah will make easy for him a path to Jannah

So we thought that our beloved Salafi youth would spend time to seek beneficial knowledge from the Kitaab of Allah and the Sunnah of Rasoolullah according to the Manhaj of the Noble Salaf as Salih, after reading this small treatise and All praises be to Allah alone who made it easy upon us this journey. . < > This 7 day trip is what we spent with Shaykh, but I think he spent more than 2 weeks in Srilanka, I was so sorry that I missed the remaining days I ask Allah to forgive me for any mistake in this article. I would be happy to correct if the reader points out any mistake found in this article, InshaAllah.

The Call
Summary of the call from Salman,
. There is news that some Mashaykh are coming to Srilanka on so and so date, I am planning to go InshaAllah, how about you? MashaAllah, I am willing to join you, Ill plan and let you know InshaAllah!

- I replied and hung up.

The Sponsor
Alhamdulillah who blessed Salman with money to manage the trip, as for me, I had no savings that time. For about 5 days later I got a sponsor for my ticket and expenses (may Allah bless her in abundance and reward her more )
} { The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the Way of Allah, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn); it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains. Allah gives manifold increase to whom He pleases. And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, AllKnower. (Al-Quran - 2:261) And the likeness of those who spend their wealth seeking Allah's Pleasure while they in their ownselves are sure and certain that Allah will reward them (for their spending in His Cause), is the likeness of a garden on a height; heavy rain falls on it and it doubles its yield of harvest. And if it does not receive heavy rain, light rain suffices it. And Allah is All-Seer of (knows well) what you do. (Al-Quran - 2:265)

Tickets were booked for me and Salman. I was eagerly waiting for the departure. Since 7th Safar 1433 (1st Jan 2012), the Srilankan government started collecting $10 - $15 USD for issuing on-arrival visa. So we got the visa in advance through their website. All praise be to Allah who made it easy for us. 2

Airport
We both reached Chennai airport few hours before departure, I met br. Nazeem on the way to airport and left for boarding immediately. After completing all the formalities we were inside the craft for takeoff. Please fasten your seatbelts, we are taking off voice uttered inside the aircraft. Within about an hour of departure we landed in Colombo. We thank Allah for His abundant bounty where in these days its so easy to travel long distances in short time, lets be thankful to Him for this great Niam by using it in obedience to Him. Welcome to Bandaranayke International Airport again the same voice! Got stamped for 30 days validity! Brothers Abu AbdurRahmaan Nawas al-Hindi ( ) and Abu Amna Asmer came to host us in the Colombo airport. May Allah bless and reward those noble brothers who cordially received us and helped us a lot for the sake of Allah. We ask Allah to grant us from His bounty and increase us in tasting the sweetness of Eeman : .........

Day 1
17 Jumaada al-awal

Ad-Daar as-Salafiyyah We reached the Markaz Ad-Daar as-Salafiyyah after Dhur. It basically consists of a Masjid, Library and a Madrasa where students reside as well. ))... ((
No people gather in one of the houses of Allah, reciting the book of Allah and studying it among themselves except that tranquility descends upon them ..

Alhamdulillah who blessed them with this Salafi Masjid in their land and Students eager to study the Book of Allah and we ask Allah to bless us the same or better in our land. Yes, we both are new comers to this place. There were many smart students roaming around wearing thoub. More than 50 students are studying full time here, Masha Allah what a beautiful atmosphere to see students dressed in white thoubh and studying the deen (full time). Theyve already benefitted from the famous hadeeth Jibreel Upon entering the Masjid we saw Shakyh Husain with pure white thoub and a white turban on his head and Abu Asma Milhan (a brother currently studying in Dammaj), were discussing with Br. Silmy Madhani (not Yahya Silmy asSaylani but one of the teacher in that Madarsat alQamah). They all stood up and welcomed us; I thought they misunderstood with my appearance! Listen to the brief introduction about Shaykh Husain by Br. Nawas in Tamil and in Arabic. Actually when we reached there it was time for Dhuhr which they already prayed, so we prayed and had a good lunch. The Shaykh was heartily welcoming us and showing his brotherhood enquiring about our health and journey etc. Jazahallahu Khaira. Dars started in the Masjid, oh no, it actually continued from previous sessions. Most of the Tamil translations were done by either Br. Silmy Madani or Hisham Madani. 4

Session After Asr (3:45 pm)

Kitaab/Topic Sahih alBukhari Kitaabul ILM

Mudarris Shaykh Abu Muad Husain

(Arabic Tamil)

Shaykh started asking questions from previous classes, I was waiting for br. Silmy sitting next to Shaykh to translate the questions. To my surprise most of the students were responding to him with their answers in Arabic! And many students recited the whole the whole ahadeeth taught in the previous session, MashaAllah! Then I understood that its a norm in the classes there that the students should memorize whatever was taught in the previous classes. I was scared by that norm! But I seek Allahs help After the short revisions, Shaykh continued with the next lessons for which br. Silmy translated in Tamil. The session went for around 45 min then break for 30 min. It was a tea break, but we never saw the Shaykh relaxing except with benefitting those around him with some sort of ILM The next came Q&A session specially organized for ladies. There was a complete veil between the sisters and us (including Shaykh, I mention this because some so called Shaykh takes classes for ladies without screening themselves in front of women!) Session After Asr break
(5:00 pm - Magrib)

Kitaab/Topic Q&A for Ladies

Mudarris Shaykh Abu Muad Husain

(Arabic Tamil translated by Hisham Madani)

Immediately after Magrib salah the next dars started comprising of 3 kutub. I was surprised to see that all of the students including the Shaykh were constant in increasing in Ibadah ( )even though Talabul-ILM is the best of Ibadah! I wondered why Shaykh was so eager in performing the Sunnah prayers though he was a traveler, then I came to know that its for only 4 days that you are accounted as a traveler as per the correct opinion (i.e. if you already came with a plan that you are going to stay for more than 4 days then you are not considered as a traveler) Session After Magrib Continued Kitaab/Topic Kitaab at-Tawheed Mudarris Shaykh Abu Muad Husain

Then we move with handful of notes for dinner and then to the room. Salman and I were staying in the same room while Shaykh and br. Nawas stayed in separate rooms. But all were in the same beautiful house, MashaAllah. And Shaykh used to spend time with us, answering to our queries, talking to us I THOUGHT THAT MASHAYKH WERE PEOPLE BEYOND OUR REACH !

Day 2
18 Jumaada al-awal

Drilling Duroos
Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbarhayyalas salat hayyalas salat, the Adhaan was

voicing sweet in the ears.

Got ready at last and walking to the Masjid, about 500 meters from the room. I was telling Salman, Let the Shaykh come slowly and well walk now so we were walking with Nawas. Upon entering the Masjid I was surprised to see Shaykh sitting with his legs stretched behind a chair! Many a time Shaykh used to lead the Salah with beautiful Qiraat! Yes, he is hafidhul-Quran, Sahih Muslim and a few other books (not just hifz but he studied it with great Ulema like Shaykh Muqbil and Shaykh Yahya al-Hajoori for many years!) After Fajr, the regular session continued, Session After Fajr Kitaab/Topic Laamiyahtu Shaykh-il-Islam

Mudarris Shaykh Abu Muad Husain

(Arabic Tamil)

Shaykh Abu Muad Husain (Hafidhahullah) had written Sharh for this kitaab. He used to spend a lot of time in the library, even the morning tea used to be brought to the library and the evening tea used to be in the outdoors but Shaykh used to have some books in his hands though not in the library! After the dars, we had a quick tea and left to room for taking rest. Within 2 hours we have to return to Masjid for the next dars! 6

Its time for breakfast; at last I got into the right session now! Most of the time we all (Shaykh Husain, Nawas, Salman and me with some brothers) used to eat together in a single Sahn. The Shaykh used to suddenly disappear while we all used to still keep eating, we can then find him either taking dars or in the library (!) After breakfast there were two sessions going-on at the same time within the Masjid. I have the choice now, one handled by Shaykh Husain (only Arabic) and other by br. Milhan in Tamil. Well you should know what I chose, no idea? You have to learn more about me then! Salman used to choose Arabic dars as usual. Session After breakfast Continued

By the time I joined them br. Milhan was about to finish the kitaab in a couple of sessions. Though its less time, br. Milhans way of teaching was very interesting and interactive, barakallahu feehi. I was more attentive in his class because he doesnt let people sleep! It seems there were many books completed before we reached there. I will try to share you as much duroos as possible in the end of this article, InshaAllah. Dhur to Asr is the time to rest, you will get less than 2 hours. In which you need to have lunch and as usual it was also a time of ILM, poor Shaykh was never left alone, But he always seemed to be happy with ILM rather than anything else. At times 7

people used to call him on the phone and again! It was for some ILM either dars or - some fatawaa etc.! As I have explained in Day 1, the rest of the sessions continued from Asr.

Day 3

19 Jumaada al-awal

Milhans Refutation As the all the sessions went as per schedule, I will write only the changes from normal scheduled sessions and noteworthy incidents. Each day after dhuhr one student has to deliver a small speech in ARABIC for which the Shaykh will listen to and correct if any mistake found. Either br. Nawas or br. Milhan handles the Arabic language dars. And one of the last sessions was handled by br. Milhan giving refutation to Yahya Silmys accusations towards him. Br. Milhan had sought Shaykhs permission to explain and clarify some lies and atrocities which Yahya Silmy accused Milhan of and basically he wanted to proclaim the truth and free him of such false claims. Shaykh said about PJ: What an Evil person he is!? Did he not get anybody else except the Sahaba to speak ill off !!! Shaykh said about Yahya Silmy: Did he not find any other people except Daral hadeeth in Dammaj to speak bad about and to warn about !!!? With the presence of abundance of Buddhists - Kuffar and Ahlul bidah like Tableeghi jamaat etc in his own country ( who truly deserved to be warned and exposed ) !

Day 5

21 Jumaada al-awal

Yaumul Jumaa! After Fajr Shaykh completed the kitaab Laamiyahtu Shaykh-ul-Islam and gave a short beneficial advice to the students. The summary of it, Have taqwa in your deeds Be a person who implements the Sunnah of Prophet (Sallahu Alyhi wa Sallam) in your life. Get benefitted by the ILM you acquired in these days by putting them into action with your deeds. Take firm grip over the Quran as it can either support you or stand against you in this Dunya, Qabr and Aakhira depending upon your deeds. Then we all moved to Colombo and stayed there for the rest of our days. All these days we were much worried for missing our dear companion and brother Abu Yahya Ibrahim with us as we know he loves to sit in such gatherings especially when Arabic language is given more importance during dars

Shaykh used to sit in this chair for all the duroos he took in Negombo!

We stayed in place arranged by br. Asmer in Colombo (Jazahallahu Khaira for all his help and efforts) and left to Masjid for Jumma. Finished the lunch outside and returned to room. Evening after Magrib there was a discussion arranged with two of Asmers relation and a Tableeghi imam of a Masjid nearby our residence. Shaykh explained in detail about the importance of seeking ILM before getting into dawah and why Jamaatu tableegh is not the right way. The Shaykh basically posed some questions to tableeghi which made him ponder and realize that they were ultimately wrong! The main questions were, When was this tableegi group invented? Who & how did the founder start forming this group? How many years have you been with this deviant group? How much of Quran and how many ahadeeth and how many books have you learnt from these duaat (callers)? Where is Allah? That tableegi imam who was with tableegh for around 12 years and didnt know the answer (rather didnt want to answer)! And the session continued more than an hour. Session Topic After Magrib Discussion with Tableegh in (for about 1:30 hours) Colombo 10 Mudarris Shaykh Abu Muad Husain

Shaykh had a telelink class with his students in Iraq taking Kitaab-at-Tawheed by Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab, (May Allah reward immensely for Shaykh Husains efforts). Then we left back to room.

Day 6

22 Jumaada al-awal

Sisters Special The Sahabiyyat used to ask the Nabi to fix a day for them to learn the Deen. May Allah bless our Salafi sisters who are eager to earn the pleasure of Allah by seeking ILM. A session for ladies was arranged by some brothers in Colombo, whos relation is studying in Dammaj . The Introduction Br. Nawas gave the introduction about Shaykh that he is hafidh- ul-Quran, Sahih Muslim and a few other books, apart from that he studied with great Ulema like Shaykh Muqbil for many years etc. Surprisingly Shaykh got the mic and commented that you people should not give more importance to such introduction like what a person memorized, his tazkiyyah, etc. dont get attracted towards it unless his ILM and AMAL matches. Without the AMAL his ILM or Tazkiyyah is USELESS! Subhanallah! Then Shaykh gave some introduction to Salafi dawah and Darul hadeeth in Damaj, Yemen. Importantly Shaykh threw some light on the 3 characteristics of Shaykh Muqbils dawah. Summary of what we understood from Shaykhs speech 1. Tamayyuz To not mix with people of falsehood. 2. Zuhd, Qanaat, Iffa Modesty, self contentment and not to BEG people especially in the name of Dawah! 3. Shajaa , Sad bil haqq To boldly proclaim the truth. In addition Shaykh mentioned about the fitan prevailing amidst the Salafi world and that the issue is HOW a person is prevailing upon righteousness and not how much he studied or how many tazkiya he has. He mentioned about how some hizbee people are causing confusion by making use of the JAHL of common masses. 11

One such doubt was that they separated between the dawah of Sh. Muqbil and that of Sh. Yahya al Hajooree! One of those 1st fitna makers were Abul hasan al Maribee. And the recent fitna maker is AbdurRahman al Adanee who found this new Hizb which has a constricted Wala and Bara. They block the people from benefitting from Ulema (in Dammaj). This kind of stopping the people from seeking ILM is considered to be deviating the people from the path of Allah. Alhamdulillah, now Shaykh Rabee is supporting Dammaj as he was before (details here). Some people claim that Shaykh Rabee was supporting only during war, this is baseless. The matter is to follow the proofs whereas the Ahlul baatil they confuse the people with some misplaced fatawaa. Shaykh also warned against Yahya Silmy saying he acts like an Aalim and makes use of some tazkiyya to deceive people. Ultimately Shaykh mentioned that we never mean that WE ARE INFALLIBLE. But we prohibit TAQLEED (blind following individuals). He added that we ACCEPT THE HAQQ from anyone. We dont have a constricted allegiance or a closed group amidst our self. But we just explained the TRUTH as we are oppressed (by the fitna makers). There was an interesting question from the sisters: Yahya Silmy says that he has a lot of men with him who seek bride, so what is your advice? The Shaykh replied NOT TO MARRY the ones who are with him and advised those sisters to be far away from Yahya Silmy's group. Session Morning Topic Session for Ladies in Colombo Mudarris Shaykh Abu Muad Husain
(Arabic-English translation by br.Milhan)

(10:15 am - Dhur)

Download audios of Colombo sessions Q&A followed after the dars, papers started to flood with questions from ladies few of them were interesting like, Can I make a Hijira as a condition before nikkah? There are few groups in Srilanka who claim Salafi dawah, how should we recognize and respond them? Adhaan and Iqaama for women Wiping over the scarf during wudhu 12

For women which is better, seeking ILM from books and internet or from scholar Recommended books for children and best way to teach them Arabic, etc. How to share time between seeking ILM and family

Good, I think you are searching for the Shaykhs answers, I appreciate your keenness. I will upload the recording as soon as I get them InshaAllah. The Adhaan and Dars I remember in one session where he was continuing his dars during the Adhaan, for which a sister had sent a note is it ok to teach during Adhaan? for which the Shaykh replied so politely after seeking pardon and thanking the sister for this comment and then stating that he was sorry for it, as he was wanting to complete the session in Colombo (which was very less in spite of the zeal of the sisters to learn was very high) and then he explained the hukm that its better to answer the call of the Muedhin is better than continuing with the dars, whereas if someone continued its not HARAM or prohibited. Wallahu Aalam. The Cricket Players We all were walking to Masjid for dhur, in front of the Masjid there were many young boys playing cricket. Some were with beard and cap while most of them are not. While returning from Masjid after dhur salah we saw the boys still playing without praying salah. Shaykh got tensed and asked if they are muslims! Then Salman and I with Shaykhs permission went to one of those boys and advised not to ignore salatul jamaah like this. I was so amazed to see the Shaykh and br. Nawas, Asmer and Milhan were always busy with ILM, whether in the car, or at the Sahn, or walking back to the house or even relaxing during tea breaks. I saw that the Shaykh was always with some book in hand or some dhikr in his tongue or some naseeha or bayaan to someone asking him. I witnessed he was so humble, polite, kind, helpful, mindful to our queries, attentive. Muhadhara for Brothers There was a session organized for brothers in Colombo after Asr. Session for Brothers in Colombo

Shaykh Abu Muad Husain

(Arabic-English)

Hifz We were invited to br. Milhans house for dinner. There were around 15, all the brothers gathered there were discussing and chatting amongst themselves. Shaykh noticed this for a while and stopped all of us by giving an interesting assignment.
All of you are going to memorize a Hadith with narrator and reference, so listen to me carefully! Shaykh said.

Butterflies started to wander in my stomach, hope for others too! Narrated by Jaabir ibn Abdullah that Prophet said

Kullu Maruufin Sadaqa

(Sahih alBukhari)

He repeated this thrice and started asking one by one including Milhans father, poor old gentleman got caught seated in the middle! I was scared at my turn as usual but I memorized by that time, Alhamdulillah. Interestingly everyone recited.
Ahsant, so all of you are qualified to be a talibul-ILM Shaykh commented, naam,

he is kidding!

Nullifiers of Wudhoo A session was specially arranged for few brothers there and nearby places. There were some elderly people who attended the class very eagerly. As we were waiting 14

for some more brothers from outside, Shaykh asked an open question to the gathering came so far.
List out the nullifiers of wudhoo

After hearing all the relevant and irrelevant answers Shaykh responded that there are 7 things that nullify wudhoo (with daleel). Download audio 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Riddha Things that come from the two openings Eating Camels meat Deep sleep Intercourse Insanity Touching private parts

Then the dars started and completed by a Q&A session. At the end of the session Shaykh gave a beautiful naseeha (advice) to all of us. Reasons for Thabat (Steadfastness) 1. To concentrate on Quran (reading, memorizing, understanding, pondering and acting upon it) { } 2. To sit with good people and to avoid bad companionship { } 3. To read biographies of Prophets, Sahabah and the righteous people { } 4. Travel to seek ILM { } 5. To make Dua { } Shaykh was very tired by this time. We all went for dinner in another brothers house and left to room. 15

The next day I returned to India and they all went to another cool place.
