Its true. Get plenty of sleep, regular exercise, eat a balanced diet, drink
plenty of water and youll help your body ght off germs.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
If possible, stay home when you are sick. You dont want to give your
cold to others around you.

After bringing a new baby home the many changes,
lack of sleep and new challenges of parenting can be
overwhelming. Enter Kossuth Growing Healthy Kids,
a program available through Kossuth Regional Health
Center designed to support new parents in giving their
children a healthy start, through home visits and one-on-
one education.
We go into the home to visit with expecting parents
and those who already have an infant or children, said
Salena Siefken of Community Health. Part of our visit
is focused on the childs health and development. We
do height and weight checks, and show parents where
their baby is on the growth curve chart. We also screen
Helping children get a good start with Kossuth Growing Healthy Kids
children to see that they are hitting important milestones in
communicating with others, motor skills and social skills.
Promoting positive parent-child interactions, learning
and coping skills when dealing with the new baby are also
part of the visits, Siefken said.
We provide education to parents on what to expect
from a baby or a toddler and how to create a nurturing
home environment for that little person. We also talk
about parenting skills for older children that may be in
the home. At the end of a visit, we try to always leave
on a positive note. Parenting is a stressful job, and some
days are going to be better than others. Knowing how to
cope with the tough days is just as important as enjoying
the good days, said Siefken.
Visits also involve discussion about how to access local
resources. Kossuth Healthy Family services are available
due to funding support from Community Health of
Kossuth Regional Health Center, Early Childhood North
Central Iowa Empowerment and the Iowa Department of
Public Health.
Kossuth Regional Health Center offers obstetrics,
childbirth education, breastfeeding workshops, family
medicine and much more. Find KRHC on Facebook for

Regular soda ........................ 120 calories for 12 ounces
TIP: Tired of
plain water?
Try adding a
slice of lemon
or lime and
crushed ice.
Your body needs it.
Your body is two-thirds water. Water is essential for everything your body needs
to work properly. Brain function, digestion and metabolism all require water.
When you dont have enough water, you might feel sluggish and less alert.
Water helps prevent illness and disease.
Staying hydrated helps your body fush out toxins. In fact, dehydration is
linked to illness and diseases like asthma, ulcers, allergies and arthritis
not fun. Drink water to help your body stay healthy.
Water has no calories.
Fruit juices, soda and other popular drinks are LOADED with sugar and
empty calories. Energy drinks might give you an instant boost, but if they
contain lots of sugar, youre in for a sugar-crash a couple of hours later.
Water has no caffeine.
If your goal is to drink six to eight glasses of water a day, remember drinks
that contain caffeine dont count. Why? Because caffeine is considered a
diuretic, which means it actually fushes water from your system and
contributes to dehydration.
You hear it a lot drinking six to eight glasses of water a day can help you stay
healthy. But do you know why drinking enough water is such a big deal?

These are foods that are good to eat almost
anytime. They are the healthiest ones.
Examples include low-fat milk, whole grain
breads and cereals and fresh fruits and
vegetables.
These are sometimes foods. They arent
of-limits, but they shouldnt be eaten every
day. At most, eat them no more than several
times a week. Examples include wafes
and pancakes, sports drinks and low-fat ice
cream or yogurt.
These foods should make you say exactly
that Whoa! Should I eat that?
Whoa foods are the least healthy and
the most likely to cause weight problems,
especially if you eat them all the time. Thats
why Whoa foods are once-in-a-while foods.
Examples include french fries, cookies and
other sweets and fried hamburgers.

vides high-quality and ef-
cient patient care using
innovative and cost effective
x-ray imaging systems.
The Radiology Depart-
ment recently upgraded two
pieces of equipment. A new
C-Arm, a portable piece of x-
ray equipment, is used during
surgery to help assist the sur-
geons. Secondly, we installed
a new 16 slice CT scanner.
The CT machine is used for
many different situations in-
cluding: trauma situations
or motor vehicle accidents,
cancer patients (diagnos-
ing or restaging for chemo),
stroke patients, appendicitis,
or patients suffering from a
pulmonary embolism or other
pulmonary disease.
With the commitment of
Quality Care, Close to Home,
we also recently purchased
was a versatile digital radi-
ography system. The DRX
wireless detector and DRX-
Evolution produces immedi-
ate image access to help speed
decisions on patient care.
This system performs a wide
variety of general radiography
examsincluding trauma
with remarkable convenience,
productivity and patient com-
fort. The DRX-Evolution is
powered by the cassette-sized
wireless detector which trans-
mits digital images to the Ra-
diologist for immediate view-
ing and manipulation.

going the distance to make a
difference for our patients!

vices for Humboldt, Dakota
City, Livermore, Bode and

average of 550 calls per year.
HCMH Emergency Respond-
ers encourage community
members to obtain a Vial of
Life Kit. This kit contains: A
medical information form; A
vial to store the form and any
advanced directives you may
have. Store the vial on the top
shelf in the door of your re-
frigerator; two stickers: One
is already on the vial. Place
the other on the upper outside
corner of your refrigerator.

ghters, paramedics and po-
lice are trained to look for the
Vial of Life sticker and obtain
information from the vial.
The HCMH Ambulance
staff recently created a new
program that sets the depart-
ment apart from any other
EMS service. Ambulance calls
that are critiqued as urgent
emergencies, such as motor
vehicle accidents, burns, chest
pain, or unconscious persons,
will ignite a Urgent Response
not only from the ambulance
department but a response
from off call personnel as
well. These off call avail-
able EMTs will respond di-
rectly to the scene and will
begin patient care prior to
the arrival of the ambulance.
In a cardiac arrest situation,
time is muscle, and immedi-
ate care and CPR increases
the survival rate signicantly.
Trained EMTs can be on the
scene within a few minutes
from the time the call is dis-
patched. This is a program
that no other EMS service of-
fers to their community.
The future of cardiac re-
sponse times will change and
increase in services offered by
the HCMH EMS crew. With
the purchase of Welch Allyn
Propac Monitors the team can
at this time shorten their on
scene time with patients with
possible cardiac problems.
These new monitors can ob-
tain patient vitals within min-
utes, saving valuable time to
quicken transport times. With
the purchase of 2 Lifepack 12
Debrillator Monitors, the
Ambulance team will conduct
on-site 12 lead EKGs and
immediately submit them to
the on call cardiologist at the
Iowa Heart Center. The cardi-
ologist will then determine if
direct transport to the cath lab
is needed.
The staff of the Humboldt
County Memorial Hospitals
EMS department is excited
about the advanced care we
now offer our patients.

viding a full continuum of care

Back Pain Facts & Statistics
Although chiropractors
care for more than just back
pain, many patients visit
chiropractors looking for
relief from this pervasive
condition. In fact, 31 million
Americans experience low-
back pain at any given time.
A few interesting facts
about back pain:
One-half of all working
Americans admit
to having back pain
symptoms each year.
Back pain is one of the
most common reasons
for missed work. In fact,
back pain is the second
most common reason
for visits to the doctors
ofce, outnumbered only
by upper-respiratory
infections.
Most cases of back pain
are mechanical or non-
organicmeaning they
are not caused by serious
conditions, such as
inammatory arthritis,
infection, fracture or
cancer.
Active Health Chiropractic Offers Wellness Lifestyle
Americans spend at least
$50 billion each year on
back painand thats
just for the more easily
identied costs.
Experts estimate that
as many as 80% of
the population will
experience a back
problem at some time in
our lives.
What Causes Back Pain?
The back is a complicated
structure of bones, joints,
ligaments and muscles.
You can sprain ligaments,
strain muscles, rupture
disks, and irritate joints, all
of which can lead to back
pain. While sports injuries
or accidents can cause back
pain, sometimes the simplest
of movementsfor example,
picking up a pencil from
the oor can have painful
results. In addition, arthritis,
poor posture, obesity, and
psychological stress can
cause or complicate back
pain. Back pain can also
directly result from disease
of the internal organs, such
as kidney stones, kidney
infections, blood clots, or
bone loss.
Manipulation as a
Treatment for Back
Problems
Used primarily by
Doctors of Chiropractic
(DCs) for the last century,
manipulation has been largely
ignored by most others in
the health care community
until recently. Now, with
todays growing emphasis
on treatment and cost
effectiveness, manipulation
is receiving more widespread
attention.
Chiropractic spinal
manipulation is a safe
and effective spine pain
treatment. It reduces pain,
decreases medication, rapidly
advances physical therapy,
and requires very few passive
forms of treatment, such as
bed rest.

In fact, after an extensive
study of all currently available
care for low back problems,
the Agency for Health Care
Policy and Researcha
federal government
research organization
recommended that low back
pain sufferers choose the
most conservative care rst.
And it recommended spinal
manipulation as the only
safe and effective, drugless
form of initial professional
treatment for acute low back
problems in adults.
