READING OUTCOMES

The student will be able to:

1. Read to understand and to interpret a variety of texts: novels, plays,
essays, periodicals, and short stories.
2. Use a variety of reading strategies to construct reading comprehension,
interpretation and critical thinking. (SQ3R, Talk to the Text, Think Aloud,
Context clues)
3. Interrelate information and insights from a variety of disciplines.

LITERATURE OUTCOMES

The student will be able to:

1. Understand various literary genres: short stories, essays, poems, plays,
and novels.
2. Apply knowledge of literary conventions to analyze and discuss themes,
insights, and lessons offered.
3. Understand literature as a reflection of the culture and of the author.
4. Recognize and discuss the application of insight gained from literature to
his/her own life.(Socratic Circles)
5. Use a variety of graphic organizers to enhance literary interpretation.

WRITING OUTCOMES

The student will be able to:

1. Write fluently for multiple purposes/audiences to produce compositions
such as personal narratives, summaries, letters, research reports, poetry
and position papers.
2. Write effectively in a timed situation.
3. Use the writing process: pre-write, organize, draft, revise, edit, and
evaluate.
4. Analyze and evaluate written texts to determine if purpose has been
achieved effectively.
 5. Demonstrate effective written communication skills by using appropriate
conventions of genre, content, form, style, voice and mechanics.

73-76% = C
70-62% = C-
67-69% = D+
63-66% = D
