Module Manual: Understanding Job Market Academic Year: PGDM 2012- 2014

1. Introduction to the course The course revolves around the most important aspect for a MBA graduate and that is to get a job. The prime objective is to understand the current job market in India, various sectors in which jobs are available, how to apply for a job, some realities of the job market, skills required for getting a job. 1.1 Course Learning Outcome To equip the student with the broad overview of the job market & to put them in a thought process of deciding which sector they ultimately want to choose. The thrust of this highly interactive module is to enable students learn the following things: Understanding the Indian Job Market Various Sectors in which Job is available Job Profiles offered to MBA Graduates Skills required for getting the job Students will be able to make up their mind as to which sector suits them so that they start preparing from day 1 for the knowledge required to prosper in it.

These learning objectives will be attained in 9 sessions covering a total of 9 contact hours. 1.2 What are my chances of getting a job? According to a report by the Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry (Assocham), the Indian economy will create 87.37 million new jobs by 2015. Also the Ascent Employment Index registered a growth of 8 basis points over the previous year. With the economy looking up various organizations are poised for growth with a rise in demand for middle & junior Management positions. Top industries according to this index are Travel & Tourism, Hospitality, Manufacturing & Insurance. There is considerable growth in almost all the sectors in India & the level of recruitment is also high with a large number of organizations looking to fill the vacancies. Staff retention is also low with some companies experiencing up to 80% turnover each year. 1.3 Where can I work? Major industries: service industries (54% of GDP), manufacturing industries including textiles, chemicals, steel, building materials (29%), and agriculture (17%). The agricultural sector employs 60% of the workforce. Recent growth areas: electronics, banking, information technology, business process outsourcing. Shortage occupations: as the economy is expanding, there are opportunities for skilled employees in all the main areas of employment. Major companies: ICICI, HDFC Bank, Bharti Airtel, Deloitte, Dabur, IMRB, LG, Tata, Wipro, HUL, etc

Major cities: NewDelhi (capital), Gurgaon, Noida, Mumbai (largest), Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. According to the survey of Times Ascent Delhi & NCR have the maximum openings. Apart from this major jobs are found in Tier II towns that is interiors of Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and cities like Meerut, Patna & Jaipur

According to the ASSOCHAM report , Tier II and Tier III cities have more employment opportunities than Tier I. 1.4 Wh ats it like working in India? Average working hours : the official working hours is 48 hours. This may be followed in the public sector, but many employees in the private sector upto 60 hours a week. Holidays: Employers generally offer around 20 days annual leave per year. Average graduate starting salaries: 20K Working practices & customs : Professional Environment though emphasis is more on team work & not only on individual achievements.

4. SESSION PLANS 4.1 Session 1-Opportunities in IT/ITeS Sector The purpose of this session is to make the students aware of the bright scope of overall global IT/ITES market. Thereafter the job market in the IT/ITES sector would be introduced along with the various flagship companies providing lucrative careers in the sector. IT-ITES Sector offers lucrative career opportunities for students to attain success in this versatile and gigantic field. Learning Outcome: Information on the IT/ITeS industry & the profiles available in the industry, a clear picture about the opportunities in the sector & the companies that visited IILM campus & the profiles offered. 4.2 Session 2- Opportunities in Financial services & Insurance The penetration of Insurance in India is a meager 5.2% which itself tells the opportunities awaiting the sector. Thus the session will enlighten the students about the highly regulated Financial services & Insurance industry, the FDI norms, the regulators of the industry, opportunities for growth, profiles-type of work, top companies, skills required & companies coming to IILM campus in the past years.

Learning Outcome: The low penetration of the financial services & the insurance sector is one of the major positives of this sector & students will come to know about the profiles & the major companies in the sector. 4.3 Session 3-Opportunities in Advertising You can tell the ideals of a nation by its advertisement, said Norman Douglas. This is one sector which is with us, the moment we get up in the morning & pick up a newspaper to read. So this is going to be an interesting & interactive session which will not only involve the opportunities in the sector, its growth rates, profiles, top companies & companies visiting the campus but also interesting videos on some very out of the box advertisements. Learning Outcome: The out of box advertisements will energize students to think creatively & decide accordingly whether this sector is meant for them. Do they have that creative bug inside them? Also they will come to know about the growth opportunities in the sector. They will also learn about the companies that came to the IILM campus for recruitment, the profiles offered and the range of packages. 4.4 Session 4-Opportunities in Automobile With the ever growing middle class population & continuous increase in the income the one sector that is experiencing growth due to the increase in demand of newer & more fuel efficient models is automobiles. Moreover the competition in this sector is intense due to number of foreign players operating in the market. The session will introduce the students to the sectors growth, profiles & the top employers in this sector. 4.5 Session 5-Opportunities in FMCG In India, the FMCG industry is the fourth largest sector with a total expected (organized) market size of over US 30 billion in 2012 and can be classified under the premium and popular segments. The purpose of this session is to make the student aware of what all Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry primarily deals with, like the production, distribution and marketing of consumer packaged goods. The industry is vast and offers a wide range of job opportunities in functions such as sales, supply chain, finance, marketing, operations, purchasing, human resources, product development and general management. So the students will broadly understand the various verticals in which jobs are available in this sector. Learning Outcome: The students will learn about the vast opportunities available in the FMCG sector & the top companies in the sector like Pepsi, HUL, Nestle, P&G and what profiles do the companies offer that visit IILMs campus for recruitment. 4.7 Session 7-Opportunities in Retail CII Retail Summit 2011 Projects Indian organized retail sector has potential to cross US$250bn and 20% penetration by 2020, the sector will drive inclusive, sustainable growth The purpose of this session is to introduce the retail industry to the students. Recognize the key characteristics of retail Industry, challenges and imperatives of the retail industry, know exciting career opportunities in the respective areas of Store operations, merchandising,Retail buying, Visual Merchandising, Retail Marketing etc at entry level positions in various formats of Retail including Luxury Retail. 4.8 Session 8-Opportunities in Telecom and Opportunities in Hospitality This session will enable the students to understand the growing opportunities in the telecom sector. Telecommunication industry is developing at a fast pace and is having a major impact on management graduates to keep themselves updated for the ongoing career opportunities. A career in telecom demands high level of project management skills. The industry is always in search of Project Management Professionals at every functional level with right mix of skills. Its growing by 20 to 40 percent every year since past 3 years which itself is a positive sign for the growth in this sector. This session also will introduce the students to the fast growing hospitality sector in India.1.6 Million new Jobs will be created in the years following 2011 according to the Ma Foi Randstad Survey.The industry is vast & offers wide opportunities like Hotel Manager Jobs, Event Management, Food and Beverage Management, Accommodation Management, Concierge Manager Hotel Jobs, Housekeeping Management Hotel Job, Finance and Marketing Jobs. Learning outcome: The students will learn about the top employers in the telecom a n d H o s p i t a l i t y sector, profiles offered, companies visiting our campus so that accordingly they can decide of whether there skill set match those required to enter this sector & what all they need to develop over these two years. 4.9 Session 9-Opportunities in Banking Banking is the lifeline of any economy .This is one sector which is highly regulated & the changes in this sector (monetary policy) has a direct impact on the others sectors of the economy. Students will get to know about the entry level jobs in the banking sector , what are growth opportunities, various branches in banking like retail banking, corporate banking etc & accordingly they can analyze which is best suited to their skill set. 5. ASSESSMENT DETAILS 5.1 The total assessment will be for 10 marks. Students will be required to submit a assignment of not more than 1000 words on the following question. Question: Students will have to choose any one sector( of their interest) out of the total 9 sectors taught in the classroom & prepare a report on the job opportunities available in the sector using the job portals like naukri.com, monsterindia.com, timesjobs.com & many more such portals. The student is expected to write the profiles available, what are the eligibility criteria & what are the skills required for a particular profile. Answers should be in font Times New Roman, font size 11. Kindly use A4 size ivory sheets. Your answers should also be following the format mentioned below: A brief introduction of the sector chosen (150 words) Main body of the answer Conclusion (200 words)
