Museum Row Event Showcases Orovilles Best Treasures

On Veterans Day, Sunday, November 11th besides the annual Veterans Day Parade that starts at 11:00 A.M. on Montgomery Street the second annual Celebrate Museum Row event will run from 10: A.M. to 4:00 P.M. with lots to do for those venturing into the historic downtown area. Celebrate Museum Row provides an opportunity to visit all of the museums, plus other events, for a reduced ticket price of $5.00 for individuals or families. Purchasers will receive a wristband that provides admission to the museums and presentations by the Lake Oroville Visitors Center at the Historic State Theatre. But wait theres more! Visitors will be able to participate in locating nine letter clues at each location that will spell a word, or words, and allow entering a free drawing for $100.00 cash or a $50.00 restaurant coupon (Courtesy of Great Adventures Publishing, Inc.). Want more? Each museum will feature an assortment of food and drink items for purchase and everyone will receive a museum bookmark and a chance to enter a drawing for Oroville themed gift baskets. There will also be music and festively dressed docents. Free shuttle busses will be available to get you from one spot to another which includes, the C.F. Lott Home in Sank Park, Chinese Temple & Museum, Bolts Antique Tool Museum, Pioneer History Museum, Feather River Nature Center, The Ehmann Home, Butte County Historical Society Museum & Archives and the Historic State Theatre. Oroville is steeped with history and the museums present intriguing and interesting information about those earlier times. The Lott Home provides a classic stage of period furniture and memories of a local love story. Many items adorn the Chinese Temple & Museum which tells another story of people who worked in the gold rush era, created a community and left behind incredible artifacts. Bolts Antique Tool Museum with over 9000 tools is a true one-of-a kind adventure with rotating special displays. The Pioneer History Museum captures information about the early pioneers who settled in Oroville. Several favorite items include a doll from the Donner Party, a cat and mouse in the crocheted display case and a picture of the infamous Black Bart holding a gun that follows your eyes as you move. The Feather River Nature Center & Native Plant Park places you at the edge of the Feather River and in a museum crafted out of an abandoned bath house built in the 1930s filled with rocks, arrow heads and stuffed small animals. Want to find out about what Oroville and olives have in common? Visiting the Ehmann Home is the answer, a Craftsman era house filled with history about Freda Ehmann the founder of the olive industry as we it know it today. The Butte County Historical Society Museum & Archives tells the stories of the lives of people in Butte County from the early mining days to the present time. Step into the Historic State Theatre and envision its early beginnings including silent film era greats such as Charlie Chaplin, but for the Museum Row event the Lake Oroville Visitors Center will have great area information and feature a variety of short films ranging from the building of the Oroville Dam to early settlers. As part of the car wash Industry Pastime Auto Wash will honor veterans and military personnel on November 11th through the Grace for Vets FREE wash program. Doe Jane Ross Doe, 46, died Sunday, June 8, 2012 following a brief illness. She leaves her husband of 65 years, Jane Doe; her son, John Doe her daughter, Jane Doe Jr., two grandchildren; and many close friends.
Born and raised in California, where she was a lifelong resident. An avid golfer, she was a longtime member of The Country Club, the Anywhere Club and the Pine Country Club in CA. She served on the board of directors for Anywhere Country Club and First United Methodist Church of Sunshine. A funeral service will be held November 12 at Hays Funeral Home of Anywhere, with private burial.

Center Stage, by Carol A. Kitchen

Taking Center Stage, the comedic style of Charlie Chaplin looms, and at times, just peeks through in the form of subtle gestures in Neil Simons play, The Good Doctor opening at the Birdcage Theatre on Thursday, Nov. 8 in Oroville. A tormented writer, representing Chekov, is struggling to write and takes the audience on a journey as he creates a series of short stories or scenes. Each one takes on a life of its own, serving up a theatrical smorgasbord of laughter and pathos. Each story reflects different human needs, wants or emotions. Each, in turn, is inexplicitly bound to the whole. The collaborative effort of this play, under the Direction of Hungarian-born and trained Leila Krusch exploits a collaborative genius seldom seen. Droll at times, crying for a tear between giggles and explosive laughter, this production brings together a talent pool that is indisputable. Most cast members take on multiple roles showcasing their combined talents. They dont just act, they become the characters they are portraying in this fast-paced, intellectually-stimulating play. Anyone acquainted with local theatre knowledge will recognize the creative energy of this production team that reads like a Whos Who. A VETERANS DAY SALUTE

At 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, the ghting of World War I was ended. On this day German representatives signed a truce between the Allies and Germany. The signing took place in a railroad car in the Forest of Compeigne, France. That day became known as Armistice Day and was celebrated each November 11 by the Allied countries. The British services have historically been held in front of the Cenotaph in London, and the French services at the Arch of Triumph in Paris. In the United States the celebration is centered at the tomb of the Unknown soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, and since 1954 has been called Veterans Day to honor all who have served in the defense of their nation. It is a day when all Americans can pay tribute to those who have put their lives on the line or have sacriced their lives to uphold our nations honor. We salute you and those who are now serving.

City Of Oroville Announces Leaf Pick-Up Program

The Citys annual fall leaf pick-up program will start on Monday, November 5, 2012 and continue through February 28, 2013. The purpose of the annual leaf pick-up program is to assist in keeping the Citys drainage system clear and in removing excessive green waste. This year the Public Works Department has divided the City into five zones, Monday through Friday, for leaf pick up. Residents are asked to (1) put as many leaves as possible in your regular green waste container; (2) rake leaves onto the pavement about one foot from the curb line on your designated leaf pick up day which can be obtained by visiting www.cityoforoville.org (Public Works/Operations & Maintenance Division/Fall Leaf Pick-up). The City has been recognized for the past 32 years as one of the Tree City USA recipients. Along with the beauty of the trees, and the value in cleaning our air and water, moderating heat and cold, and bringing warmth and grace to the community, they do have a downfall excessive leaves this time of the year. In the 1970s, scientist James Lovelock and microbiologist Lynn Margulis developed a theory called the Gaia Principle, which proposes that Earth is an ancient, living and self-regulating system and that organisms within the system interact with the Earth to form a complex structure that maintains the conditions required for life on the planet. For those who live close to the landwe gardeners for example--this is not some far-fetched notion. With our hands in the dirt, our eyes ever observing the natural world, and our intuition and knowledge informed by the elements, the Earth is living, whole and abundant. And Gaia has gifts for us all if we are but willing to receive them. The Gift of Wonder: Some morning we rise and enter the garden to nd a dew, bejeweled spiders web sparkling in light of the days awakening. We nd as we dig a garden bed the castoff skin of a lizard or snake, magically fragile and shaped as if the inhabitant had simply dematerialized. The birdhouse we hung on the fence just for decoration is suddenly a nest for swallows or titmouse, and we marvel as the tiny chirps from within indicate a new family has begun. We harvest just-ripe tomatoes, and the sweet-tart avors burst alive in our mouths. Everything we experience is an invitation to accept and revel in this gift of wonder. The Gift of Hope: This year we struggled with not enough water and observed the oak trees begin to die. We lost the broccoli to gophers and watched as plant after plant keeled over as the roots were eaten to the nub. The tomatoes succumbed to blossom end rot and hornworms; the raspberries to lack of water and the birds. But, oh my, the peppers are simply glorious. Habaneros the color of Montezumas gold; Anaheims as long and plump as carrots, Jalapenos and Thai peppers and Cayennes as hot as they are red. What a harvest! And next year . . . well there is hope. Always there is hope. Just as we hope when we place each seed in the moist, dark earth that it will germinate and sprout, push its tender seedling head above the earth and GROW, so we are ever hopeful that next season, or next month, or even tomorrow, will be better than what we have just experienced. The Gift of Patience: Wait is what we tell ourselves after sowing each seed. Wait we say again as the seedlings emerge knowing that some will never reach their full potential. Wait we repeat, as if a mantra, as we set the transplants into the garden beds, our eye on the weather predictions and the rain gauge. And whether we have been good stewards of the garden or not, at last we have to say once again, Wait as we watch the fruits of the earth grow full and round and lled with juicy, succulent ripeness. How not to develop patience in the face of such waiting? And it serves us well as we wait for children to grow strong and sure of themselves, as we wait for the fullness of our own lives to be revealed, even as we wait at the side of loved ones who are passing beyond this world. We wait with patience, and our minds and hearts are at peace. The Gift of Community: Here we observe a nest of ants busy at their own harvesting. There the birds are lling up on tender insects that our tilling has uncovered. A ladybug patrols the plants we have carefully nurtured for the aphids that serve as her main meal. Under a leaf a praying mantis; behind the garden shed the hills and furrows of moles making air tunnels in the soil. We are all working together here in the garden. And as we look aeld, we see the entire natural world, all of Gaia, working hand in glove toward creating the planet on which we all live and play and thrive. In this we are family, in this we are all connected, in this we ARE community. This year at your Thanksgiving table, set a place for Gaia, and when you give thanks remember that everything upon that table is a gift from her living, generous and abundant hands.
