BCC Intensive English Program Grade Eight Course Syllabus for Semester 1 / 2012-2013 Course Objectives: This course

e is an outcomes-based, English language enrichment course designed to develop and consolidate students skills in the areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Specific course objectives include: To encourage students to be active and constructive in their own learning, using English as a tool to create meaning, seek knowledge, and to interact effectively with others in the school context and in the broader community. To extend students competence and confidence in using English in a range of demanding and challenging contexts. To integrate learning English with other areas of the College curriculum. To encourage students to become responsible, independent, reflective learners. To promote an atmosphere of collaboration and co-operation amongst students.

Week Week 1: May 14 18 Topic Introduction/Getting to know you Distribution of materials and ice-breaking activities. Unit 1: Great idea! Student Book pages 6-13 What is the greatest invention in history? Students will read texts and listen to audio about famous inventions. They will talk about past activities and they will also discuss music. Students will study past continuous, and compare past continuous with past simple. They will learn to use when and while.

Unit 2: He ran faster. Student Book pages 14-21 What is your favorite sport? Students will read texts and listen to audio about sports activities. And well talk about sports and learn to make comparisons and apologize for mistakes. Students will study comparative and superlative adjectives, intensifiers with comparatives, not asas, adverbs and comparative adverbs. Unit 3: Our world Student Book pages 24-31 Do you care about the environment?

Week 6: June 18 22 Week 7: June 25 29

Students will read texts and listen to audio about natural resources, environmental problems, and conservation. They will discuss environmental problems and what they think will happen in the future. Students will study will and wont, may and might, and if/unless + first conditional.

Week 9: July 9 13 Week 10: July 16 20

Students will read texts and listen to audio about vacations. They will talk about recent holiday events. Students will study question tags, present perfect simple, and just/already/yet. Unit 5: Growing up Student Book pages 42-49 Are you an adult? Students will read texts and listen to audio about growing up. They will talk about ceremonies, and asking for permission to do things they want to do. They will also learn how to retell stories. Students will study present simple passive, let/be allowed to.

Unit 6: Have fun! Student Book pages 50-57 What do you do to have fun? Week 13: Aug. 6 10 Week 14: Aug. 13 17 Week 15: Aug. 20 24 Students will read texts and listen to audio about having fun, and they will talk about the things they think are funny. They will talk about unfinished situations, different points of view, and the many ways people can have fun. Students will study present perfect simple, and they will study the difference between for and since. Week 16: Aug. 27 31 Review Week for IEP Exams. IEP Exams. Reading/Project/Activity Week.

Week Topic Unit 7: Disaster! Student Book pages 60-67 Do you sometimes read about terrible events in the newspaper? Students will read texts and listen to audio about all kinds of disasters. They will learn to exchange information about past events, describe dreams, and talk about natural disasters and environmental issues. Students will study past simple passive, a, an, the, and zero article. Unit 8: Ways of living Student Book pages 68-75 What is your dream house like? Students will read texts and listen to audio about different kinds of homes. Students will describe their town, country and home. They will also learn to talk about future plans. They will study too much/too many, not enough, will, and going to. Week 5: Nov. 26 30 Review Week for IEP Midterms.

Students will read texts and listen to audio about multiple intelligences. They will talk about what they think helps them learn best, and they will discuss their talents and abilities. Students will study determiners; everyone/no one/someone, etc. students will also study must, must not, and dont have to. Week 8 will also include time for Christmas projects. Christmas Break is December 22 January 1.

Week 9: Dec. 24 28

Christmas Break Students return Jan. 2. Reading/Project/Activity Week. Healthy Eating. Unit 10: Music makers Student Book pages 86-93 What kind of music do you like? Students will read texts and listen to audio about different types of music. They will describe recently completed and unfinished actions, give advice, and talk about music and becoming a pop star. Students will study present perfect continuous and compare it to present perfect simple.

Week 10: Dec. 31 Jan. 4
