Teachers Name: Lari Johnson Subject/Course: Language Arts Media Specialists (Intern) Name: Lisa Hendrix Grade Level: Fourth Grade Brief Summary of the Unit: This unit will focus on enhancing students knowledge of reference materials and the appropriate use of so that they will be prepared to do a research paper on explorers. Approximate Time Frame for the lesson: 1 class Approximate Time Frame per lesson: 45 minutes periods 1 hour

CCSS and Essential Standards: ELACC4W8 Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources: take notes and categorize information and provide a list of sources. ELACC4L4c: Consult reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, encyclopedias, glossaries, and thesaurus) both print and digital to find pronunciation and clarify meaning of key words and phrases. Information Processing Skills (8): Identify social studies reference sources to use for a specific purpose. Understandings: Students will understand that there are a variety of reference tools both in print and online that are helpful tools when doing research. Essential Questions: What are different types of resource materials and how are they used?

Performance Tasks: Students will demonstrate understanding by correctly locating information on their scavenger hunt with their partner.

Stage 3 Learning Plan


Learning Activities: W-The students will be researching explorers for a research paper in social studies and ELL. This lesson will help them get ready to conduct their own research. H-To hook the students I will tell them that later they will be working with partners to go on a scavenger hunt. E- To be better researchers students will: Identify different types of resources Use the computer to help locate information Assess learning through conducting the scavenger hunt R- Assessments Assessment though observation and the final evaluation of the scavenger hunt E-Working with a partner the students will complete a scavenger hunt after the lesson using the various resources (atlas, encyclopedia, almanac, thesaurus, internet search). The student will compare findings at the conclusion with fellow classmates. T-Students will be asked during the lesson to name the best resource for given situation. During the lesson the students needs will be met by kinesthetic and tactile movement. The students will also be paired with a partner. O-Hook Read Essential Question and discuss standards. Reflect that knowing how to use and choose the correct resource tools will make them better researchers.
