SEATTLE MARINERS WINTER LEAGUE UPDATE

DOWN UNDER IN THE ABL: The ABLs 6 clubs - the Sydney Blue Sox, Melbourne Aces, Brisbane Bandits, Perth Heat, Adelaide Bite, and Canberra Cavalry will compete in a 46 game, 14 week regular season. Approximately 40% of players in the ABL are affiliated by teams from Major League Baseball, Japans Nippon Professional Baseball and the Korean Baseball Organization. The Adelaide Bite will feature a core group of veteran Australian players wholl be joined by a dozen international import prospects from the Seattle Mariners and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations. First baseman Ji Man Choi, outfielder Nathan Melendres and right-handed pitchers Seon Gi Kim and Andrew Kittredge will represent the Mariners on the Bite roster. Melendres (1x4, R, HR, RBI) hit a home solo home run in the 8th inning in the first game of the season on Nov. 1 vs. Perth. He is currently batting .200 (2x10) with 1 run scored, 1 home run and 2 RBI in the first 3 games. AFL RISING STARS GAME: The Arizona Fall League had its 7th annual Rising Stars Game on Saturday, November 3 at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick as the East Division defeated the West Division 9-4. Infielder Nick Franklin (1x3), catcher Mike Zunino (0x2) and left-handed pitcher James Paxton (1.0,2,0,0,1,2) represented the Mariners on the West Division Rising All-Star squad. STARS SEEING STARS: MLB.com conducted a survey of the participants in the 2012 Rising Stars Game, asking each a simple question: Who in the game, other than yourself, do you think is the most likely to become a Major League star? A total of 40 players responded, providing a wide range of responses. Mariners catching prospect Mike Zunino and Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton tied with five votes apiece. Zunino has hit safely in 12 of 14 games, batting .259 (15x58) with 8 runs scored, 7 extra-base hits (3-2B, 2-3B, 2-HR) and 11 RBI in the AFL. KNOCKING IN RUNS: C Mike Zunino, INF Stefen Romero, INF Nick Franklin and OF Vinnie Catricala have combined to knock in 40 of the Peoria Javelinas 117 RBI in the teams first 23 games. Franklin currently leads the Javelinas with 13 RBI, while Zunino ranks 2nd with 11 RBI and Catricala is T4th with 9 RBI. STREAKING: INF Nick Franklin has recorded a hit and knocked in at least 1 run in each of the last 5 games he has appeared for the Javelinas, batting .412 (7x19) with 5 runs scored, 1 double, 1 triple, 1 home run and 7 RBI. He has hit safely in 10 of 14 games with 5 multi-hit contests, batting .333 (16x48) with 9 runs scored, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs and 13 RBI. ROMO ON FIRE: INF Stefen Romero has hit safely in 8 of 9 games he has appeared with the Javelinas, batting .378 (14x37) with 6 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 home run and 7 RBI. COMFORT OF HOME: OF Carlos Peguero has hit safely in 4 of 6 games with 3 multi-hit contests with Gigantes del Cibao in the Dominican Winter League. Overall he is batting .350 (7x20) with 3 runs scored, 1 double, 1 home run and 4 RBI. LORD FARQUHAR: LH Danny Farquhar is 1-1 with 3 saves and a 1.74 ERA (2 ER, 10.1 IP) in 10 relief appearances with Cardenales de Lara in the Venezuelan Winter League. He has limited opponents to a .250 (10x40) average, while walking 5 and striking out 13. INSTRUCTIONAL LEAGUE/CO-OP WRAP: The Mariners announced OF Jose Leal was named the Most Improved Player and RHP Scott DeCecco was named the Most Improved Pitcher during the Mariners Instructional League in Peoria, while OF James Jones (Most Improved Player) and RHP George Mieses (Most Improved Pitcher) were highlighted for their improvement during the Co-op League. Leal, who was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2011, hit .078 (6x77) in 27 games with the Mariners in the Arizona League during his first professional season. DeCecco, the Mariners 21st round selection in the 2012 First Year Player Draft, went 2-4 with a 5.95 ERA in 16 games (9 GS) with Short-A Everett during his rookie campaign. Jones, who set a career-high with 26 stolen bases in 2012, hit .306 (151x493) with 109 runs scored, 54 extra base hits (28-2B, 12-3B, 14-HR) and 76 RBI in 126 games with Single-A High Desert last season. Mieses, who spent a majority of the season on the disabled list, went 1-3 with a 4.93 ERA in 12 games (7 GS) combined between AZL Mariners, High Desert and Jackson.
