Election Night at the Convention Center


REVISED: NOVEMBER 6, 2012, 12:00PM The following is an updated synopsis of potential transportation and traffic impacts because of election night events happening in the South Boston Waterfront. This information is extremely fluid and is subject to change as the day goes on, or at a moments notice. Former Massachusetts Governor and Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is holding his Election Night events at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC) tonight, Tuesday, November 6. The expected attendance is approximately 8,000 and Secret Service will be overseeing all security with local public safety agencies. Congestion will include private occupancy vehicles, parked media vans, increased taxicabs, hotel shuttles, and Secret Service security. Road closures will be in place this evening and will affect tonights commute. State Police and Boston Police are posted near the BCEC to monitor traffic through early Wednesday morning. Timeline - Tuesday, November 6: 5:00PM: World Trade Center Avenue closes to vehicular traffic. 5:00PM: There will be limited access surrounding the BCEC on Summer Street. 5:30PM: The following road closures are expected to be put in place: o Summer Street: between Melcher Street and Pumphouse Road o D Street: between Cypher Street and Congress Street o Fargo Street: between D Street and E Street o See map next page 8:00PM Tuesday 2:00AM Wednesday: Event is live at the BCEC; expect traffic restrictions listed above to continue as the Secret Service and public agencies feel necessary. As of this morning, the MBTA routes 4 and 7 will travel down Summer Street. However, route diversions are possible. The Silver Line Waterfront is expected to run as normal and cross over D Street but this could also change. Riders should monitor www.mbta.com for service updates. The following roads will be OPEN (although these roads should have no restrictions, drivers, pedestrians and cyclists will experience increased traffic congestion): A Street Melcher Street Congress Street Seaport Boulevard B Street Massport Haul Road Pumphouse Road South Boston Bypass Road will remain open as usual, to authorized vehicles only Recommendations Employees at area businesses are advised to use public transit and those who can telecommute/work remotely are strongly encouraged to do so during the afternoon hours. Everyone is advised to avoid the areas around Summer Street/D Street and the Convention Center, especially after 5:00PM/5:30PM Tuesday night.
