Use of Library Facilities and Information Resources in The Arts, Commerce and Science Colleges of H.N.G.U., Patan : A Study

This study evaluates the use of Libraries of arts, commerce and science colleges associated with Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University, Patan. A survey of 91 teachers from Arts, Commerce and Science Colleges conducted through a questionnaire. The analysis of the collected data covers the use of library resources, classification and catalogue, library services and physical facilities. Concludes that the chief intention for the use of libraries has been the academic interest of the users.

Introduction A library is the strength of any educational institution and without proper libraries there can be no real progress in education. Education comprises of two essential elements, namely teachers and books. Hemchnadracharya North Gujarat University, Patan has more than 77 degree colleges, which offer B.A., B.Com, B.Sc. degree courses. It is thus essential for a college to maintain a library for the use of students and teachers. Scope And Limitation This study is confined to information resources and services provided by the libraries of Arts, Commerce and Science Colleges of Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University, Patan that aim to fulfill the needs of the faculty. It covers textbooks, reference books and physical facilities, etc. This study limited to the teachers of Arts, Commerce and Science Colleges associated with Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University, Patan. Objectives To identify the adequacy of the materials in the libraries, To know the necessary information resources for teaching and learning process in the of interest to the college, To find out the types of information required by the faculty, To ascertain the opinion of the regarding the ad equacy of resources and services available To help the administrator of preparing an enrich ment better use of the library, and Methodology A questionnaires were distributed among the faculty and the required data was collected. According The total strength of teachers was 134 (excluding librarian and physical cultural instructor) in the col-

leges. The questionnaires were distributed among selected group of 100 teachers out of 42 respondents were from Arts & Commerce College and 49 where from Science Colleges. Data Analisys 45.24% respondents of Arts & Commerce College and 24.49% science faculty visit the library everyday. 48.94% of science teachers visit library once in a two days. As opposed to this, 20.41% of the teachers from both the colleges visit the library occasionally. 3 85.71% and 79.59% from Arts & Commerce College and Science College respectively visit the library for collecting reading materials in their subject. 61.90% and 61.22% of respondents both the colleges respectively visit the library to know the latest arrivals in their discipline. Majority of the respondents (85.71 % and 75.51%) are aware of literacy classification in both the colleges. As opposed to this, 14.29% of the Arts faculties are not aware of library classification and 24.49% of the science faculty is not aware of library classification The above table explains that 69.05% respondents of the Arts College followed by 63.27% respondents of science college consult the library catalogue for finding information about documents in the library. From the above table 63.27% science colleges respondents expressed that the reading materials are easy to access in the library and 54.76% arts & commerce college respondents expressed that the reading materials are easy to access in the library. From above table 54.76 Arts & Commerce College and 67.85 Science Colleges are satisfy with reference collection. 16.67% and 4.08% of respondents have graded reference collection as very poor in Arts & Commerce College and 67.85 Science Colleges. 88.10% Arts & Commerce Faculty respondents most frequently use text books and 79.59% of Science Faculty respondents also use text books frequently. 75.51% respon-

dents of Science College used reference book and 61.91 Arts and commerce Faculty respondents use reference book.33.33% and 24.49 respondents of Arts & Commerce College and Science college respectively expressed that reading room is well furnished. More respondents from both college are satisfy with ventilation and light in reading room. 33.33% and 24.49 respondents of Arts & Commerce College and Science college respectively expressed that reading room is well furnished. Findings Majority of respondents visit the library for the purpose of consulting text-books, reference books, to acquire current and general information and to read newspapers and popular magazines, etc. Majority of the respondents consult the library catalogue for collecting information about docu ments available in the library.

the reading materials which is helpful for academic activity of the teachers. The opinions expressed by respondents regarding the physical facilities in library are not adequate. Suggestions Taking this into consideration, this survey has been carried out the following suggestion are been made: 1. Organize user awareness / orientation program through audio-visual materials or through lecturer method. 2. Books arrangement should be ensure a quick way of locating required materials. 3. Separate reading room, seating arrangements for faculty members.
