BMS 501 Microbes in Human Disease Credits: 4.0 Microorganisms have a profound effect on our everyday lives. This effect can often be dramatic enough to capture many of today's news headlines. Did you ever wonder why people died from eating hamburgers contaminated with E. coli? How do "flesh-eating bacteria" function? Will there be an AIDS vaccine? Explores the answers to these and many other fascinating questions by examining the role of microorganisms in human disease. The fundamental structure, metabolism, genetics, and ecology of clinically relevant bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites and presented in relationship to the human host and its immune system. The foundation, incidence, and control of microbial diseases are presented through case studies. Emphasizes active learning in which students participate in classroom discussions, experiments, and demonstrations. Laboratory exercises designed to introduce techniques for the identification of important pathogenic microorganisms and disease diagnosis. NURS 500 Introduction to Professional Nursing Credits: 2.0 The course provides an overview of professional nursing with a focus on reflective thinking. A synthesis of current and projected trends in nursing practice and education, with an introduction to topics on ethical, social, and legislative issues, are explored. This course is divided into five modules: nursing as a career, nursing as a profession, nursing as art and science, nursing as communication, and nursing and relationship-centered care. NURS 504 Disease and Drugs I Credits: 4.0 The two semester course advances knowledge of human physiology and the pathophysiological variations in selected global disease states in adults and children. Students explore how the human body uses its adaptive powers to maintain a steady state and how alterations affect normal processes. Pharmacological agents used on these alterations are examined. NURS 510 Health Assessment Credits: 3.0 This course is designed to introduce the knowledge and skills required to perform a systematic examination of a healthy adult, and to record findings appropriately. Includes basic principles of data collection and basic analysis using skills of interviewing and techniques of inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation. Health assessment is framed through the use of the nursing process. NURS 515 Nursing Fundamentals Credits: 1.0 This course introduces techniques and theory of basic psychomotor skills used to deliver nursing care. The focus is on the essential principles and skills needed for practice. NURS 516 Health Assessment and Nursing Fundamentals Lab Credits: 2.0 This course is designed to provide experiences to apply the knowledge and skills required to perform a systematic examination of a healthy adult, to perform basic psychomotor skills and to record findings appropriately. Students implement the nursing process by obtaining health histories, performing physical and psychosocial assessments, establishing a database, and formulating initial nursing plans. Students become familiar with the Nursing Simulation Lab.

NURS 505 Disease and Drugs II Credits: 4.0 The two semester course advances knowledge of human physiology and the pathopsychological variations in selected global disease states in adults and children. Students explore how the human body uses its adaptive powers to maintain a steady state and how alterations affect normal processes. Pharmacological agents used on theses alterations are examined. NURS 506 Human Development, Interaction & Learning Across the Lifespan Credits: 4.0 The course emphasizes human development, interaction and learning across the lifespan as essential to safe, effective relationship-centered care. An exploration of selected theoretical perspectives on human development, education and learning and group development prepares students to engage in professional practice. NURS 601 Function and Well-being of Older Adults Credits: 4.0 This course focuses on developing knowledge necessary for promoting healthy aging and wellness across the lifespan. Multidimensional assessment skills are utilized to develop appropriate evidence-based interventions to assist individuals and families to maintain wellness and promote healthy lifestyles and enhance the quality of life for older adults with acute and chronic conditions. Students will explore nursing issues and principles of promoting wellness across the health care continuum including end of life and palliative care. NURS 601C Function and Well-being of Older Adults Clinical Credits: 2.0 This course focuses on development of skills necessary for promoting wellness and healthy aging across the lifespan. Clinical practicum with simulation laboratory experiences provides supervised professional nursing practice for development of multidimensional assessment skills, decision-making processes, and evidence-based strategies and interventions that maintain wellness, promote healthy lifestyles, and enhance function and quality of life for older adults. Application of evidence-based practice across the health care continuum including end of life and palliative care is emphasized.
