org www.centrolegal.org CENTRO LEGAL DE LA RAZA SEEKS STAFF ATTORNEY Staff Attorney position with an emphasis on working with tenants and sexual assault survivors The Organization Founded in 1969, Centro Legal de la Raza (Centro Legal) is a comprehensive legal services agency focused on strengthening low-income and Latino individuals and families by providing free and low-cost, bilingual, and culturally competent legal representation, education, and advocacy. The mission of Centro Legal is to protect and expand the rights of low-income people, particularly monolingual Spanish-speaking immigrants, throughout the East Bay region of Northern California. The Position Centro Legal provides an ideal training ground for an attorney seeking experience in providing direct legal aid to low-income individuals and families in a community-based setting. Centro Legal has recently partnered with the Family Violence Law Center to work on The Healing with Justice Project. This project aims to provide sexual assault survivors, including survivors who experience sexual assault as part of domestic violence, with comprehensive legal services. In addition, Centro Legals Tenants Rights Project promotes safe, stable, and healthy housing by helping people fight unlawful evictions, illegal rent increases, and bad conditions. The Staff Attorney will be responsible for working in both the Healing with Justice and Tenants Rights Projects. Duties and Responsibilities The Staff Attorney will assist the Legal Services Director in all areas of Centro Legals Healing with Justice and Tenants Rights Projects including:

Healing with Justice Project Responsibilities


Conducting initial intake interviews; Conducting in-depth legal screening for Healing with Justice Project participants; Acting as the initial point of contact for any clients referred to Centro Legal by the Family Violence Law Center; Providing legal advice and counsel, limited scope, and full legal representation for Healing with Justice clients with respect to housing law matters; Referring Healing with Justice Project participants to additional project services such as limited scope and full representation in immigration, employment, restraining order, civil harassment order, and family law cases; Participating in Healing with Justice activities beyond client work, including collaborative team meetings and trainings; and Participating in Alameda County community meetings as assigned.

Tenants Rights Project Responsibilities


Assisting tenants in all aspects of the landlord-tenant relationship; Providing assistance to tenants who receive an eviction notice or unlawful detainer; Advocating on behalf of tenants to landlords for needed repairs and to abate uninhabitable housing conditions; Providing pro per assistance to tenants, including the preparation of answers to unlawful detainers; 1

Assisting with the representation of tenants in eviction cases in the Superior Court of Alameda County; Representing tenants in administrative hearings before the City of Oakland Rent Adjustment Program; Helping the Legal Services Director operate the weekly Tenants Rights clinics by conducting individual consultations, drafting letters, and supervising volunteers and law school interns during those clinics; Working with clients and the community to find alternative creative remedies for problems when legal solutions prove insufficient or ineffective; and Conducting community education and outreach regarding tenants rights. Qualifications First and foremost, the applicant must profoundly share Centro Legals mission and vision of social justice. Below are additional qualifications. Law degree; Fluent in Spanish; Member in good standing with the California State Bar or have sat for the July 2012 bar exam; Experience in housing law preferred; Experience working with sexual assault and domestic violence survivors preferred; and Experience working with low-income, immigrant, and monolingual Spanish-speaking communities preferred. Compensation and Benefits Salary starting at $42,000 and commensurate with experience, plus medical and dental benefits and a generous vacation and holiday package.
