LETTER FRoM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECToR

s I review the last year, I am again reminded of your generosity. As one of the frontline social service providers in our community, The Advocates thanks you for helping us assist over 500 women and children build violence free lives in 2007. Your contributions also supported our efforts to prevent violence region-wide through education provided to over 5,000 students and other individuals in the community. I want to share comments from a woman who stayed in the shelter. Thank you so much for taking me on and helping me through this time and getting back on my feet and finding myself. You guys are very appreciated. And when I get healed, someday I would like to give back what you have selflessly given me. Thank you for everything you do! No one should experience the pain of abuse. All of us should speak out against violence. Thank you for participating in The Advocates ongoing work to create a healthy community! To A Peaceful and Joyous Holiday Season for Everyone! he Advocates own Community Education Coordinator, Candice Newmyer, developed the above Men Against Violence campaign for October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Like the campaign it was modeled after in New Mexico, she contacted local men to participate, and the results were extremely positive. In fact, the campaign received so much attention that The Advocates received many calls from other area men willing to volunteer their time for future campaigns. A special thanks to photographer Brooke Bonner and graphic artist Robin Leahy for their pro bono work on this campaign.

he Advocates child care center, A Place for Kids, provides care for an average of 35 children. The center was started in 2003 to provide sliding scale care for clients in need of subsidized child care and more licensed child care in general for the community. Staff members provide care for children ages 0- 5 and after school kindergarten care. Since the center opened, over $135,000 in child care scholarships have been offered. Scholarships are supported by sales at The Advocates Attic, private foundation grants and fundraising. For more information about A Place for Kids or volunteer opportunities at the center, call Sky Loos at 578-0390.

omestic violence survivor Lara Spencer says, It takes guts and education to change from domestic violence victim to successful woman. Lara is a positive role model for women working to escape an abusive relationship. In 1998, Lara, due to trusting her instincts, narrowly escaped being killed by her abuser two days after he was released from prison. She contributes her survival and transformation to a persistent King County prosecutor who cared, and the help of a domestic violence program. Today, thankful for the help and support she received, Lara gives back by participating on The Advocates Board of Directors. Lara helps with fundraising efforts and encourages customers at her consignment clothing store, The Dollhouse, to donate unsold clothing to The Advocates Attic and other nonprofit stores in the Valley. Every day Lara thanks the Earth Angels that supported her escape and transformation from victim to empowered woman.

Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are crucial to our success, and we can always use help: Help at the child care center: reading, gardening or just playing; Organize, sort and display goods at the thrift store; Provide much needed office support; Sit on a fundraising committee, Serve as a Mentor for children and women; Receive extensive training to work directly with clients by answering crisis line calls or being available for the Sexual Assault Go Out Team.

SHELTER EXPANDED IN 2007

10%

ue to the incredible generosity of the Bob & Catherine Beyer Family, The Advocates added a 1,200 square foot annex building to shelter property for half the cost of new construction. The Beyers donated a house and guest house to The Advocates in October 2006. The Advocates sold the main house to Scott and Nicole Castle who moved it to Carey. Over the next 12 months, with the generous help of many contributors from the building industry, The Advocates moved, installed and opened the annex addition. The Shelter Annex Addition Project was in part supported by a grant from the Kemmerer Foundation and the JELD-WEN Foundation via AmeriTitle. The Annex will provide safer and improved shelter space for women with pets and/or male children over 12 years of age. Annex Project Contributors:
