News Bulletin from the General Curia of the Congregation of the Mission

The Editor
At the conclusion of this month of missions and in the context of the Synod of Bishops, as well as the opening of the Year of the Faith, we send this edition of Nuntia. May the liberating Charity practiced by Jesus Christ and assumed by our founder be, for us, a pillar of the New Evangelization in order that those destined for the Kingdom (the poor) may experience the Fullness of Life that Jesus Christ the man of FAITH brings in the Life that the Father and the liberating God gives.

From the Holy See

We all know that, from 7-28 October, the Synod on New Evangelization was held in the Vatican. Bishops from all over the world, together with other members of the Universal Church, sought more effective lines of action in order to prepare our world so that it might benefit from the Good News of our Faith: Jesus Christ. In the context of this Synod, the Year of Faith was opened to mark 50 years since the Second Vatican Council and seven members of the Church from different parts of the world were canonized.

In its final message, the bishops reminded us that there is no man or woman who, in his or her life, like the Samaritan woman, does not find an empty pitcher near a well with the hope of satisfying the deepest desire of the heart. But also there are today many wells that offer themselves for the thirst of this man and woman. It is necessary to discern in order to avoid contaminated waters. It is urgent to orient this search and part of our labor as Church is to lead these persons toward the water of the Life, Jesus Christ. The Superior General, G. Gregory Gay, took part in the Synod, as a representative of the Superiors General. Other confrere-bishops and priests also took part, among them: Msgr. Cristoforo PALMIERI (Albania), Msgr. Berhaneyesus Demerew SOURAPHIEL (Ethiopia), Msgr. Markos GHEBREMEDHIN (Ethiopia), and Father Emmanuel TYPAMM (Cameroon), President of the Conference of Religious of Africa.

The General Curia

The Superior General
During the first week of October he had, together with the members of the General Council, the Tempo Forte Meeting. On 2 October, he had a conference, by Skype, with the participants of CIF, on the importance of this program and the sense of belonging to the Congregation in its international dimension. From 7-28 October, he took part in the Synod on New Evangelization, with some intermediate activities whenever possible. Among these were two virtual sessions on 23 October. One was with MISEVI's International Council and the other with the members of the Congregation of the Mission of Latin America, who were taking part in a meeting in Costa Rica to deal with the topic of parishes. This reflection on parishes is in view of drafting a Practical Guide on Vincentian Parishes. He also took part in the meeting that the Commission on Islam held.

On the 26th, together with Teodoro Barqun, he had lunch with the Ambassador to the Holy See from the Philippines. On the 28th, he traveled to Madrid, where, on the 29th, together with the Vicar General, he met with members of the three Spanish Provinces that are in process of discerning reconfiguration: Madrid, Salamanca, and Barcelona. Also invited were the Visitors of Portugal and Saragossa. On 31 October, he had lunch and a discussion with a group of students, connected with DePaul University in Chicago, who are in Rome.

The Curia House

Session 27 of the International Formation Center (CIF)

From 7 September to 3 November 2012, the 27 th Session of ongoing formation in the CIF program at the Motherhouse (Paris) was held. Participating in this session were: Humberto Aristizbal Sanchez (Colombia), Jacob Barle (Slovenia), Rubn Pedro Borda Montes (Peru), George Shitsukane Busieka (USA-Western-Kenya), Flaviano Caintic, (Philippines), Francisco Jose Cruz (Philippines), Manuel Edi Prasetyo (Indonesia), Marcos Gumieiro (BrazilCuritiba), Thomas Kallely (South India), Yohanes Murjiyono (China), Misael Hernn Reyes Lillo (Chile), Philip John Robson (Australia), Jos Alberto Rodrguez Mendoza (Venezuela), Sabbas Sudijono (Indonesia), and Vincius Augusto Teixeira Ribeiro (Brazil-Rio of Janeiro). Collaborating in the service of translation was Flix lvarez Sagredo (Madrid) and the facilitators and animators of this program are Daniel Paul Borlik (USAWestern) and Marcelo Manimtim (Philippines). As we know, CIF is an eight-week program during which important aspects of our spirituality are deepened. Each week has a common thread. During the first week, study is on the Vincentian foundation: Saint Vincent: life and sources, identity and mission of the CM, and Saint Louise de Marillac. The second week is focused on the apostolate and social action of the CM and community life.

The third week emphasizes the signs of the times and the renovation of our spirituality in response to these signs. In the fourth week Vincentian spirituality and virtues are deepened. Although throughout every day, there is an effort to learn, study, and value the Vincentian places, it is at the end of the fourth week and the entire fifth week, that this experience is maximized by the visit to these places in order to penetrate, contrast, and reflect in the light of what was addressed in the sessions. The sixth week is centered on the vows and important aspects of our Congregation in relation to systemic change and the Vincentian Family. In the seventh week emphasis is put on meditation from the Vincentian aspect of spirituality and the occasion is taken for a spiritual retreat. The last week concludes with the development of the synthesis.

Besides being an opportunity to increase our Vincentian knowledge, it is a time to strengthen our fraternal life and to rediscover the wealth of our Congregations internationality, which allows us to continue our process of reconfiguration.

The main difficulty of a new era is to find a people renewed.

Workers of Charity in Europe

In order to deepen the affective and effective way of making Charity present in Europe, before the challenges that this continent presents and from the invitation to a New Evangelization, the first European Meeting of the Vincentian Family was held. In this respect, the Visitors of Italy, together with a team formed by members of the different branches of the Vincentian Family, have scheduled three meetings. The first was carried out from 5-7 October and was held in the house of the Daughters of Charity on Via Ezio in Rome. It had an active participation of the members of the Vincentian Family in Italy. For this meeting, Joseph Foley, a member of the Systemic Change Team, was invited.

Dialog with Islam

As part of the fruit from the Symposium on Dialog with Islam, which was held in Indonesia two years ago, a Commission was formed to give continuity to the proposed topics. This Commission is made up of members of the Congregation of the Mission together with other members of the Vincentian Family. The Commission is coordinated by Claudio Santangelo, CM, and its other members are: Armada Ryanto, CM; Sister Abeba Hadgu, DC; Christa Foelting, AIC; and Albert Zoghbi, SSVP. This commission met on 24-25 October in the General Curia House. Taking part also in this meeting was Franz Kangler, CM, as consultant. Among the aims of this Commission is to awaken interest in this topic in the different branches of the Vincentian Family (FV). It also hopes to be a sign of collaboration among the FVs different branches, as well as a symbol of interreligious dialog, not only working in an academic sense, but also at the practical level, in ordinary life, and maintaining a Vincentian style in addressing the issue of dialog with Islam.

One of the projects of this Commission will be to organize the second International Symposium of the Vincentian Family on Dialog with Islam, which is scheduled for 2014. It will be held at DePaul University in Chicago. The exact dates will be announced later, after discussion with the respective authorities. The motto of this Symposium will be: That they might have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10).
